John William MacDougall
86, Ottawa, Ont.
passed away peacefully in his sleep on Monday, Aug. 28, 2000, in Ottawa at age 86.
Born in Sydney, N.S., in 1914, Bud was the son of George D. and Jessie MacDougall.
He attended public school in Sydney and New Glasgow. In 1940 he received his law degree from Dalhousie University. He was called to the bar the following year.
In 1941 he volunteered for the Pictou Highlanders and served overseas in army intelligence. For his actions during the war he was awarded the Order of the British Empire. He retired in 1946 with the rank of lieutenant colonel.
Upon his return to Canada, Bud began his long career with the Canadian National Railways. He worked first in Moncton and was later transferred to Montreal.
In 1941 he married Phyllis Caroline Stairs of Halifax. They had four boys – Graham, Allan, Stuart and Drummond.
He retired in 1974 as executive vice-president.
A former member of Montreal Amateur Athletic Association, Royal Montreal Golf Club, and the board of directors of Dalhousie University. He was an active member of the Presbyterian Church in Ottawa and was an avid golfer and reader.
Bud is survived by his wife and children; grandchildren, Leslie and Trevor (Saint John), Jocelyn, Katie and Alison (Toronto) and Fraser and Graham (Vancouver); great-grandchildren, Cole and Avery; sister, Kathleen and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by sister, Marion and younger brother, George.
The funeral service was held in Ottawa, Aug. 30, 2000.

ary Catherine (Mae) Petrie, 100, who will be sadly and lovingly missed, passed away peacefully on Saturday, Aug. 19, 2000, in London, Ont.
Predeceased by her loving husband, Daniel Petrie; son, Daniel (Bud) Petrie; daughters, Pauline, Carmella (Sis) King; sisters, Annie Tracey, Mary Briggs, and a brother, Murdock MacKenzie. Dear mother of Elizabeth (Mrs. Alex Brushett), Whycocomagh, N.S., and Evelyn (Mrs. Aubrey Clements), Glace Bay, N.S. Dear grandmother of Lorna (Mrs. Andrew Yorke), London, Ont., with whom she resided for the past several years; grandchildren, Edith, Audrey, Danny, Charlie, Nelson, Cathy, Kim, Susan, Wendy, Debbie and Ricky. Great-grandmother of 20; great-great-grandmother of six. Also survived by several nieces and nephews.
Cremation has taken place. Family will receive relatives and friends on Wednesday, Sept. 6, from 7-9 p.m., at the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. Funeral Mass will be celebrated Thursday, Sept. 7, at 11 a.m. in St. Leo’s Church, Glace Bay, Fr. Paul McGillivray officiating. Burial in the parish cemetery.

Clare (nee MacDonald) Neary
54, Port Credit, Ont.
Clare (nee MacDonald) Neary, 54, of Port Credit, Ont., and formerly of Glace Bay, N.S., passed away peacefully in the presence of her loving son and her sister on Sunday, Sept. 3, 2000.
Clare was employed with the Bank of Montreal in Toronto, Ont., for the past 34 years.
She will be sadly missed by her son, Brian, Toronto; her sister, Patricia Piri, Alberta; her mother, Clara Sullivan, Toronto; stepmother, Annie Mae MacDonald, Glace Bay; stepsisters, Mary Murphy, Joyce MacDonald, both of Glace Bay and Joan Murphy, Big Pond. Also surviving are two nephews and step-nieces and step-nephews.
Predeceased by her father, Michael S. MacDonald, an infant brother, Charles and stepbrother, Joseph MacGillivray.
Remains rested at Skinner-Middlebrook Funeral Home, 128 Lakeshore Road East, Mississauga, Ont. Tuesday, Sept. 5 with visitation held 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Funeral services will be held today (Wednesday) at the funeral home chapel. Cremation to follow.

Loving husband of Sharon. Dear father of Robert and Debbie. Grandfather of Cara, Stephanie and Cassandra. Survived by his mother, Rachel MacAskill of Breton Cove, N.S.; four brothers, Murdock (Marg), Don (Betty), John (Gail) and Charlie. Two sisters, Kay and Mora.
Predeceased by his father, three brothers and two sisters.
He was a member of the Seafarers Union.
No visitation. Graveside service to be held Friday, Sept. 8 at 3 p.m. in Victoria Lawn Cemetery, St. Catharines (meet at Gates).

Peacefully after a courageous battle with cancer, Joseph left his earthly family to be with his heavenly family, on Monday, Sept. 4, 2000.
Joseph Tobin at 61 years of age, beloved husband and best friend of Ann (nee Campbell). Loving father of David Levern, Joey, Dougie and his wife Jackie, Mary and her husband Dan, Audrey and her husband Paul. Loving brother of David and his wife Leona, Ron and his wife Sharon, Doug and his wife Kathy, GarfieId and his wife Charlene, Russell and his wife Kathy and Gloria and her husband Robert. Loving Papa to seven grandchildren.
Predeceased by one infant son, his parents and two sisters.
Joseph will be sadly missed by his many nieces, nephews and friends.
Rested at the Armstrong Funeral Home, 124 King St. East, Oshawa. Visitation was held Tuesday, Sept. 5 from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Funeral service will be held in the chapel, Wednesday Sept. 6, at 2:30 p.m. Interment Resurrection Cemetery.

Dan. A. MacLean
98, Ajax, Ont.
Dan A. MacLean, 95, passed away in hospital on Sunday, Sept. 3, 2000.
He was born in Stillwater, Catalone, Cape Breton. He lived in Glace Bay a number of years.
He is survived by one daughter, Eileen (Steven Wolfe) and one grandson, Daniel Wolfe. He is also survived by nieces, Christy Kirby, Dolly MacDonald, Sydney, Johnena Snow, Atikokan, Ont. and Mary Dominy, Louisbourg.
Dan was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
He was predeceased by sisters, Sarah MacIntyre, Effie MacDonald, Lexie McMullin and brothers, Archie Malcolm and Archibald.
Funeral was held Thursday, Sept. 7, 2000.
