Mary Catherine Robertson
91, Oshawa, Ont
Mary Catherine Robertson, died peacefully, after a short illness at Lakeridge Health Corp., Oshawa, at the age of 91, on Friday, Sept. 8, 2000.
Dearly beloved wife of the late Lester Robertson. Loving mother of four sons, Earl and wife, Dianne, Dartmouth, N.S., Keats and wife, Patricia, Penetan-guishene, Ont., Jackie and wife, Grace, Oshawa, Ont. and Billy and wife, Caren, Brampton, Ont. She will be sadly missed by her eight grandchildren, Maureen, Diane, Karen, Darryl, Glenn, Lisa, Joanne, Dale and five great-grandchildren; also brother, John and wife Betty Stone, Lynch’s River, Cape Breton and many family and friends.
She was predeceased by six sisters and a brother.
Relatives and friends may pay their respects at McIntosh-Anderson Funeral Home Ltd., 152 King St. E., Oshawa (433-5558) today (Saturday) from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Visitation Monday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the Alex A. Morrison Funeral Home, St. Peter’s, Nova Scotia.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Immaculate Conception, Barra Head, Cape Breton, Tuesday, Sept. 12, 2000 at 10 a.m. Interment in Barra Head Cemetery, Cape Breton Island.

Gerard Ruelland
Bowmanville, Ont.
At Lakeridge Health, Bowmanville, on Thursday, Sept. 7, 2000, in his 50th year.
Gerard, beloved husband of Karen (nee Millson). Dear father of Jason Boyd and his wife Brenda. Loving grandfather of Andrew and Nicholas. Dear brother of Raymond, Dennis, Reta, Noel, Bernice, and the late Dolly, Frederick and Anthony. Loving son of the late Peter and Elsie Ruelland.
Friends were able to call at the Morris Chapel, 4 Division St., Bowmanville, on Sunday from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Funeral service was held in our Chapel on Monday at 1 p.m. Interment Bethesda Cemetery.
Donations made in Gerard’s memory to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or to the Canadian Cancer Society would be gratefully appreciated.

James W. Ryan
Ottawa
Mr. James W. Ryan, son of the late William J. and Molly (Keating) Ryan, passed away in Ottawa on Sunday, Sept. 10, 2000.
Born in Port aux Basques, Newfoundland, he was educated in North Sydney. He enlisted in 1940 in the army as a member of the 7th General Hospital unit. He received the British Empire Medal in the 1946 King’s Honors List in recognition of meritorious service in the Second World War.
He took his arts degree at St. Francis Xavier University, and his law degree from Dalhousie University. He was admitted to the bar of Nova Scotia in 1950 and to the bar of Alberta in 1951. He joined the office of the Attorney General and became Legislative Council in Edmonton. He later worked for the federal government as Legislative Drafting Advisor and consultant in the West Indies, Trinidad, Tobago and Barbados.
In 1962 he joined the Department of Justice and in 1966 became Director of the Legislative Section. At the time of his retirement, he was Assistant Deputy Minister of Justice for Canada. He had a long association with the Conference of Commissioners on the Uniformity of Legislation and as a member of the Statute Revision Commission of Canada (1965-1972). After his retirement from the federal government, he went to St. John’s, Nfld. to set up the Legislative Drafting Office for the Newfoundland government. Subsequently, he became UN consultant in Barbados, attached to the Ministry of the Attorney General. He set up the Legislative Drafting office and taught Legal Drafting at the University of West Indies in Barbados. Later he returned to Ottawa where he resided. For some time he did consulting work for the Office of the Secretary of the Senate.
He is survived by his wife, Najala Kawaja Head; son, William H. (Rose); daughters, Catherine Offierski (Peter), Peterborough, Joan McNulty (John), Arnprior; nine grandchildren; brothers, Terry, Moncton, Martin, Edmonton; sisters, Joan, Halifax, Maureen Cochrane, Vancouver; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral to be held Wednesday, Sept. 13, at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of Fatima Church, Ottawa, Ont.
Family flowers only. Donations to Shepherds of Good Hope, Canadian Cancer Society or a charity of choice.

Michael MacLean
71, Orillia, Ont
Michael MacLean, 71, died suddenly at his home in Orillia, Ontario.
Born and educated in Sydney, he was the son of the late Archie and Tena MacLean formerly of Cornishtown Road.
He is survived by his wife Margaret Marshall; two daughters, Christene Leach, Tara, Ont., and Laura Artibello, Mississauga, Ont.; a son James, Toronto; five grandchildren; three sisters, Mary MacGrath, Mrs. Bernard Johnston (Eileen), Sydney, Mrs. John Rostek (Theresa), New Waterford and a brother Redmond (Helena), Sydney.
He was predeceased by three brothers, James, Rev. Leonard, and John, two sisters, Mrs. Danny Gillis (Marie) and Sister Mary Leonarda C.S.M.
The funeral will be held Friday morning in Orillia, Ont.

Lorelei Dawson
Kitchener, Ont.
Word was received by Thelma Farrow, New Aberdeen, of the death of her only sister Lorelei (Missy) of Kitchener, Ontario.
Daughter of the late James Gillis and mother Marion (Simmons) Gillis.
Predeceased by her husband Bruce in 1995.
Lorelei is survived by her son Bruce; daughters, Lisa, Donmarie, and Kimberley; and several grandchildren, Kitchener, Ont. Also a brother Francie Gillis and sister Thelma Farrow of Glace Bay.
Funeral service will be held in Kitchener on Saturday.

(Duncan Donald) MacLeod
72, Hamilton, Ont.
D.D. (Duncan Donald) MacLeod, 78, of Grand River passed away peacefully on Friday, Sept. 16, 2000, at the Halifax Infirmary, surrounded by his family.
He was born in Grand River, the son of the late William and Martha (Finlayson) MacLeod.
D.D. was retired from the lumbering, fishing, and mining industries and later worked as a school bus driver and owner/operator of MacLeod’s General Store, Grand River with his wife Anne for 42 years. He was a veteran of the Second World War and a member of Royal Canadian Legion Branch 110, L’Ardoise.
D.D. is survived by his wife, the former Anne MacKay; two sons, Roger (Bonnie), River Bourgeois and Parker (Patsy), Blackett’s Lake; four daughters, Carolanne (Dank) MacInnis, West Bay, Joyce, Grand River, Gail (Glen) MacDonald, Sydney, and Faye (Kenny), Grand River. He is also survived by grandchildren, Jennifer, Allister, Amy and Megan, and all the members of his extended family.
D.D. was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
He was predeceased by his brother Alex and sister Mary and brother-in-law Malcolm.
Visitation will be held in Sydney Memorial Chapel Monday 2-4, 7-9 p.m. and Tuesday 2-4, 7-9 p.m. in Grand River Presbyterian Church where funeral service will be held Wednesday 2 p.m. with Rev. Robert Lyle officiating. Interment in Grand River Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to Grand River Volunteer Fire Department, Building Fund for Presbyterian Church, The Canadian Diabetic Association or a charity of choice.
