DYKE, William John “Bill”
passed away on Monday, March 17, 2014, fittingly, for an Irish lad, on St. Patrick’s Day. He was 95 years old, still sharing his legal knowledge with those who sought it, exercising daily, making new friends, enjoying his son John’s visits, talking every day with his daughter Barbi in BC, and singing the praises of his grandsons Brendan and Dillon. Ruth, his wife of 57 years, predeceased him on July 11, 2000. His lovely sisters Fay, Irene, Donna and Jacqueline, and his dear brother Tom had all passed before him, as had his father John A. Dyke, also a lawyer, and his mother Gertrude (nee Woodside). Bill was born October 29, 1918, in Prince George, BC. He grew up in Fort William, ON, received his BA from the University of Manitoba, and graduated from Osgoode Hall Law School, Toronto, in 1943, at the age of 24. That October he began a forty year career with Polymer Corporation, first as Secretary Treasurer, then for the next 27 years as Secretary and Chief Legal Officer of the company, the last 5 years he was a Vice President of Polysar. He retired in 1983, and remained a consultant to the company for several years thereafter. He was pleased and proud to have been involved in Polymer’s growth from a synthetic rubber company, to a diversified corporation with world-wide interests. Bill was appointed Queen’s Counsel in 1977, was a Fellow of the Patent and Trademark Institute of Canada, a registered patent agent, an associate of the New York Patent Law Association, and a member of the Law Society of Upper Canada. As an active member of the community in Sarnia, he was a director of the Sarnia Chamber of Commerce and the Sarnia Red Cross Society; director and treasurer of the Victorian Order of Nurses; and a president and director of the Sarnia Riding Club. Bill has been a great Dad, a devoted husband, a good friend, a tennis champion, hockey player, and a true gentleman and scholar. Special thank-yous to Dr. Gannon and Dr. Boyle, and to the angels at Vision Nursing Home. A service and tribute to Bill will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 22, 2014, at SMITH FUNERAL HOME, 1576 London Line, Sarnia, with refreshments and mingling afterward. Should you wish, donations may be made to a charity of your choosing (if contributing at the funeral home, cheques only please).
