BELL, Clifford Joseph
Born July 4, 1929, our gentle giant was taken from us on Friday, January 2, 2009 after a courageous struggle following heart surgery, in his 80th year.
Dear husband and favourite companion of Catherine "Kay" Bell (nee Hall), with whom he shared 55 unforgettable years of marriage. Left to cherish the fondest of memories are his loving daughters and son-in-law, Karen (Gary, truly a son) and Vikki, five adoring grandchildren, Lyndsay (Sandro), Ryan (Tamara), Katee, Cole and Maggie, and his beloved great-granddaughter, Justina.
Cliff grew up with four cherished siblings, Ron (predeceased) (Ellen), Bill (predeceased) (Beryl), Verna (Bob, predeceased) and Bert (Gisela). He later gained six loving brothers and sisters-in-law, Geraldine (Stuart), Olga (Ken) (all predeceased), Gerald (Margaret), Doreen (Jack), Daisy and Paddy (predeceased) (Ray). Cliff is lovingly remembered by Auntie Dossie, Charlene (Rod), many dear nieces, nephews and their families, as well as a multitude of friends. Predeceased by his 'best buddy' Adam. Cliff was a proud retiree of the TTC with 32 years of service under his belt, becoming prouder yet when his daughter Vikki followed in his footsteps.
Though we weren't always there to share in making them, his memories forever became ours through the stories he loved to tell: whether an account of adventure on his subway run or a good yarn of boyhood high jinks during the Great Depression, we will treasure the tales recounted in his warm, distinctive voice, always with a mischievous twinkle in his eye.
He was a grand joker. He loved black licorice pipes. He enjoyed playing card games with his grandchildren, especially Cabbie. He looked forward with great relish to his wife's lovingly prepared meals. He was a master of numbers, with a penchant for dates and numerical tidbits of information, which he was always quite tickled to share with others.
A hug that made us feel safe, a genuine and infectious laugh, a lifetime of wisdom and advice, a strong spirit, a caring heart - these were some of his innumerable gifts to us. A true family man who enjoyed the simplest and most meaningful pleasures, his proudest achievement is undoubtedly the rich legacy of love he leaves behind in those who cherish his memory.
Our lives have been shaped and richened by the wealth of memories you have bestowed on each of us, and these pieces of you we hold tightly in our hearts forever. We love you deeply, and we thank you for all you have been and will continue to be. The face in the window with a smile and a wave that said "Be sure to be back soon. I love you."
That face will always be there, as it was the face of a man that showed, every living day of his life, the love of his family. Thank you to all who showed care and concern through this difficult time. Ray, thank you for being a pillar of hope and support from beginning to end.
"My love, my favourite companion, my sometime foe, always loved more than you ever understood. Till we meet again, My Love. " ~ Kay
