BURY, Ellen Celia
Died on February 16, 2010 in her 96th year at Thompson House in Don Mills.
She is survived by her sons Lewis (Katri), Mac (Nina), Howard (Susan) and Shane (Elaine), niece Judy Garba (and family), sister-in-law Juliana Nikula, grandchildren Laura, Jimmy, Christopher, Sarah, Erin and Lisa and many extended family members in Western Canada. Ellen was predeceased by her husband of 66 years Jim, by her daughter Frances, by her three sisters (Helen, Esther, Jennie), by brother Paul and nephew John, by in-laws Guy and Mol Cosh, by niece Jane Bemi and Jane's son Robin. Ellen was a very kind, compassionate and generous friend to all.
Ellen grew up on a small farm in Stave Falls, BC. She moved to Vancouver to attend high school and stayed there when she began to work. Ellen was very much interested in the arts and the out of doors. She and Jim hiked and camped extensively in Garibaldi Park and on the North Shore Mountains (Seymour, Hollyburn, Grouse, The Lions). As a young mother in suburban Burnaby, Ellen was very active in the development of facilities and programs for children such as the Westburn Community Centre and the Cascades Heights Library (which for many years occupied the basement of her house). She also spent endless hours keeping her boys involved in soccer, softball, baseball, swimming, scouting and camping programs.
When the weather was bad, she was happy to know that her house was where the neighbourhood children would gather to read, to play cards and for board games.
In 1957, the family moved to Mexico City and then in 1959 moved to Don Mills where she resided until 1975. Once again she was very active volunteering in the area schools and helped establish a co-operative grocery store. Ellen and Jim then moved to London, England for 5 years. In London, Ellen enjoyed the opportunity to re-immerse herself in 'the Arts'.
When Jim retired, they moved to Uxbridge where they developed a certified organic farm and raised chickens and sheep. Ellen began to collect aboriginal art as well as becoming very active in the Uxbridge Horticultural Society and within the sheep farming community. Every autumn Ellen would display a wide variety of vegetables and flowers at the Uxbridge Fair where she would win a handful of ribbons and awards.
In June of 2003, she and Jim moved into Thompson House. Our thanks to all the staff at Thompson House for providing a warm, supportive and engaging home for her to live in and unparalleled compassion and respect at the end.
For those who wish, donations may be made to Thompson House.
