DR. MARY-FRANCES MADILL, Ph.D., J.D.

Mary-Frances, Psychologist, Lawyer, World Traveller, Social and Animal Activist and Artist, with an insatiable curiosity and enthusiasm for life, died on the 14th of February, 2010.

She was born in Hamilton, Ontario on the 29th of November, 1933, the daughter of Gladys Cope and Ross Madill. She earned degrees from McMaster University and the University of Toronto and completed postgraduate work at the University of British Columbia, with a Ph.D. from Queen's University in 1967 and a law degree from Osgoode Hall in 1981.

In her youth, she worked in her family's business, the Plantation Hotel, Hannon. In the '60s, she travelled extensively, living in Australia and India. A student of world philosophies, she spent time in Nepal, Kashmir and Japan to study and appreciate these unique cultures. Her interest in world travel and religions was lifelong, resulting in a final trip to Thailand in 1993. In the '70s, Mary-Frances practised as a Psychologist at Whitby Psychiatric Hospital, during which time, she held two joint professorship appointments: one at the University of Waterloo teaching psychology; the other at York University directing research in telemetry.

In 1978, she decided to make a career change and entered Osgoode Hall. In the '80s, Mary-Frances combined her knowledge of law and psychology to work as a Psychiatric Patient Advocate. Due to mobility problems, she set up a clinical practice in Whitby and Toronto specializing in forensic psychology and post traumatic stress.

On her retirement in 1997, she began a new career as an Artist, studying and exhibiting in Southern Ontario and in California. Throughout her life, she was interested in social justice issues involving women, children, the handicapped, animals and the environment. She was a compassionate woman who respected and cared for her clients and valued and loved her Karmic life partner, friends, family and pets. She is sadly missed by her beloved Ann and the families whom she loved deeply and in whom she took such pride: Clarke, Janice, Elise and Mary-Lou Hurley and Ruth Gray; Ron, Lynn, Adam and David Cook; Douglas and Carol Cope; Walter, Bernice, Scott and Deb Madill; Lynn, Marion and Jim Wenman; Lea-Anne Carter and Jasper Cox. She is fondly remembered by all her special friends, here and in California.

Visitation will be held at MOUNT LAWN RECEPTION CENTRE, 21 Garrard Road, Whitby on Sunday, the 21st of February, 2010 at 1 p.m. with a Memorial Service to follow at 2 p.m.

Mary-Frances wished that, in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to your favourite charity or to the bursary established by her to assist Osgoode students who share her commitment to social justice for the disadvantaged.
These donations should be directed to the Mary Madill Bursary and sent to Osgoode Hall Law School, York University, 4700 Keele Street, Toronto, ON M3J 1P3. Cheques should be made payable to the York University Foundation.
