SIMPSON, Leonard
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our father Leonard Simpson.
Born in 1919 in Yorkshire, England, dad's love of horses gained from having worked on farms throughout his youth, found him enlisting in the 16/5th Lancers Cavalry at the young age of 16. Serving in India, he was soon promoted to Lance Corporal and during World War ll saw active duty in the armoured division of the British Army in North Africa as well as the 1st and 6th airborne divisions as a Commissioned Officer serving in Europe after the invasion.
After being wounded over Germany, dad returned to England and subsequently immigrated to Canada. Joining the Toronto Police Force in 1947, he served in several units, including the Mounted, General Assignment Squad and Court Bureau over the next 37 years.
Dad leaves a legacy of friends and family including former wife Helen, daughters Elizabeth (John), Mary (John), Susan (Nick) and son James (Jeanette), grandchildren Anne, Jason, Natalie, Mackenzie, Christopher, Katie and Emily, as well as Lizzie, Cameron, Kevin, Joanna, Jessica and David, plus seven great-grandchildren. He will be sadly missed by his brother Peter (Hilly), sister- in-law Ruth, nieces Joan, Anne, Susan and nephew David, along with their families. Dad was predeceased last year by his much loved sister Margaret (Ron) and his dear nephew David in 2006.
Many thanks to good friends Elaine and Roger, who held such a special place in his heart these last few years. Respecting dad's wishes, we will hold a simple celebration of his life at a later date.
'When I kick the bucket, I wish there not be any service that would bring out only the good things I have done- that would be a short speech. Let someone just stand up in a local pub and say, 'Len Simpson kicked the bucket last week.'
It would be nice if he or she could also say, 'he dropped dead winning a big jackpot!' You got it dad... and we'll love and miss you till we meet again. Tarah for now!
