Born in Mitchell, Ontario, on December 17, 1915, our much loved mother, Ruth, passed away at the Ottawa Civic Hospital on May 26, 2007 after a brief illness. She was pre-deceased by her husband and best friend Lt. Col. Gordon William Swartzen (1992) and is survived by her daughters: Judy Swartzen, Lee Allen (Larry), and Gail Ivanoff (Phil). She will be greatly missed by her five grandchildren: Sandy, Mike (Mary Ann Oberthier), Jamie, and Dave Allen, and Peter Ivanoff. married in 1940, Ruth followed her husband to England in World War II and served in the Canadian Red Cross Overseas Volunteer Corps. Since then, she has maintained an active life-long involvement in the Corps. Ruth was a respected and devoted teacher; upon her retirement, Ridgemont High School honoured her by establishing an award in her name, citing her dedication and integrity. A memorial service will be held at the Central Chapel of Hulse, Playfair & McGarry, 315 McLeod Street on Thursday, May 31, 2007 at 10 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to the Canadian Red Cross or the Heart and Stroke Foundation would be appreciated. The family would like to express their gratitude to the staff of Ward B5 and the Palliative Care team of the Ottawa Civic Hospital for their kindness and care. Cherished sister of Jean Neamark. Predeceased by her brothers Henry Torontow, Edward Torontow and Eleanor Torontow. She is survived by her Sisters-in-law, Beatrice Torontow, Pearl Torontow and Eleanor Torontow. She will be sadly missed by many nieces and nephews. Leah was a dedicated volunteer throughout her life to Hillel Lodge, the Civic Hospital, the Cancer Clinic and an original member of the RA Centre. A graveside Service will be held at the Jewish Community cemetery , Bank Street on Sunday, June 3rd at 3p.m. Shiva will be held at 1705 Playfair Drive.
