An inquisitive mind has been silenced. It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Wilfred Blain. Dear husband for 63 years of Dawn (nee Bateman); beloved dad of Christine and Robert of Ottawa, David (Lori) of Surrey, BC, and the late Richard of Petawawa; cherished grandpa of Kelli Lynn (Luc), Jessica, Michael, Shawna, Stephanie, and Laura; and great-grandpa to Meaghan and Emma. Wilfred was born in St. Catherines on February 12, 1922. He joined the RCAF in 1942 and became a pilot instructor in the Commonwealth Pilot Training Program. After the war he graduated from the University of Toronto in Aeronautical Engineering and re-entered the RCAF. Postings included France, Germany, RMC (Kingston), Trenton, Ottawa, and St. Hubert. He retired as a Lt. Colonel (Wing Commander). He then served for 16 years as Chief Administrative Officer for the Ottawa Public Library. After retirement he volunteered with Friends of the Public Library. Wilf enjoyed golf and especially curling. Friends are invited to visit at the St. Laurent Chapel of Hulse, Playfair & McGarry, 1200 Ogilvie Road at Aviation Parkway on Friday February 29th, from 2-4 and 7-9 pm. Funeral Service will be held in the Chapel on Saturday, March 1, at 2 pm with a reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Elisabeth Bruyere Palliative Care Unit or to the Canadian Cancer Society would be appreciated by the family. Retired President, Defence Construction Limited Peacefully at Great War Memorial Hospital, Perth, Ontario, Alan (Joe) Bland on March 15, 2008. Beloved companion of Muriel (Whyte) Turner. Predeceased by dear wife Sylvia Frith, parents Charles & Ethel Bland and brother Ward. Sadly missed by daughter Susan (Shane Stueck), son Peter (Karen), brother Larry and granddaughters Charlotte, Samantha, Alice, Laurel, Jessie & Marina. Agnes "Nessie" Brisco - 03/07/2008
Nessie, passed away at the age of 90 on March 4, 2008 in Arborstone Nursing Home, Halifax, Nova Scotia. Raised in Maybole Scotland, Nessie came to Canada in 1941 as the young warbride of the late Howard C Brisco. She is survived by her daughter Patricia (Paul) Lametti and her son Creighton(Valerie) and grandsons Craig, Daniel, Dawson, Brendan and Trevor. A loving mother who was dedicated to her family and who in her later years derived her greatest enjoyment from following the lives and significant achievements of each of her five grandsons. The family especially wishes to express their deeply felt appreciation for the kindness, the personal care and the friendship the staff at Arborstone provided Nessie throughout her stay at the home. There will be no visitation in Halifax at the family’s request. A Church Service however, will be held for Nessie in early summer in Ottawa, the city our mother and father came to regard as home and where many of their closest friends continue to reside. The centre of our universe left us after a long and very courageous battle against cancer. He passed away peacefully on Friday, February 29th, 2008 at the Elisabeth Bruyere Health Centre. Loving husband of June and cherished father of Peter, Andrew (Nancy), Jim (Tracy), Ann (John) and Donna. Predeceased by brothers Lawrence, WWII, RCAF, (1945); Leonard (1955) and Leo (2006). He is survived by his brother Raymond (Edna). Proud grandfather of Amiet, Kyla, Paul, Andrea, Joelle and Jenna. Flight Lieutenant (retired) James Kenneth (Monty) Dumont filed his final flight plan on Friday March 7, 2008. He leaves behind his beloved co-pilot, Constance Ruth (Connie) and his flight crew of Candice (Guy Levy), Ken (Becky), Wade (Wendy), Greg (Diane), and Geoff (Roxan). They along with his 13 grandchildren, Michael, Duncan, Colleen, Melissa, Meredith, Rebecca, Erik, Caroline, Genevive, Nicholas, Emilie, Natalie, and Daniel, will miss him greatly, but wish him well in his travels. After an 11 year fight with cancer (NHL) at the Ottawa General Hospital on Thursday, March 13, 2008 at the age of 60. Beloved husband of Lynn “Marilyn”. Loving father of Joshua and Step-father of James McKimm ( Lori ). Grandfather of Camden. Dear brother of Eddie ( Aggie ) and Faigie. Son-in-law of Midge and Al Gunn. He will be fondly remembered by his many nieces and nephews. A Private Family Graveside Service will held at the Jewish Community cemetery , Osgoode. A celebration of Walter’s life will be held at a later date. A special thank you to Dr. Huebsch, Dr. Anstee, Dr. Giddings, Dr. Cardinal, Dr. MacDonald, Richard, David and to the Staff of the 5th floor medical daycare, for their incredible support throughout Walter’s battle. In Walter’s memory his Kiwanis Club of Orleans will be establishing a fund for Bone Marrow Transplant Research.
