Robert "Bob" Nightingale - 03/14/2008
April 9, 1917 – March 10, 2008 Robert Nightingale passed away unexpectedly in his 91st year. Husband of Marjorie (deceased), father of Mary (Don), Jim (Brenda) and John (Candace), Grandpa will be missed dearly by his grandchildren Maya, Elana, Paris, Miriam, Evan and Jacob. Born in Bolton, England, Bob and his family immigrated to Canada in 1920, arriving in Quebec City on the ship The Victorian. As a young man Bob loved to ride his bicycle around Toronto often taking trips as far away as Niagara Falls. Like many young people during the depression, Bob chose to forgo his formal education to help support his family. A pilot and expert navigator, Bob spent the war years training young flyers to find their way through the night skies by instrument and by reading the stars. Following the war, Bob married and devoted his life to raising a family. Until a week before his passing, Bob rode his exercise bicycle 30 minutes a day and keenly watched British football with his sons and Coronation Street with his daughter. If asked to describe him, family members would say that he was the smartest man they knew; Bob could recite facts on dozens of subjects, ranging from meteorology to British history. He was a loving father and grandfather who never let a special day go by without a telephone call and a card. His sense of humour and the twinkle in his eye stayed with him until the very end. Bob was a caring, loving man who will be missed by all who knew and loved him. Donations to The Shepherds of Good Hope would be greatly appreciated. Friends are invited to a memorial gathering at the Central Chapel of Hulse, Playfair & McGarry, 315 McLeod Street on Monday, March 17 from 4pm-7pm.
