Sheldon Hamer

HAMER, Sheldon. On Wednesday, October 22, 2014 in his ninety-fourth year. Beloved son of the late Rose and the late Moses Hamer. Loving brother and brother-in-law of Phyllis Roth, the late Norman and the late Barbara Hamer. Dear uncle of John and Linda Hamer, Stephen Hamer, and Debbie Morris. Sheldon will be lovingly remembered by his great-nieces, great-nephews, family and friends. Special thanks to the doctors, nurses, and staff of the Ste. Anne’s Veterans Hospital for their devotion and compassion. Graveside service on Friday, October 24 at 1:00 p.m., at the Congregation Shaar Hashomayim Cemetery, 1250 chemin de la Forêt, Outremont. Nina Paperman

PAPERMAN, Nina (nee Masik). September 12, 1917 – October 21, 2014. Loving wife of the late Samuel Paperman, and the late John Keith Whyte. Beloved mother and mother-in-law of Robert Whyte and Stacy Sehee Whyte. Cherished grandmother of Dr. Jennifer Wacks and Dr. Ken Wacks; and proud great-grandmother of Zachary, Jacob, Matthew, Lauren and Emily – the "crew"! Nina is also survived by Sam's daughters, Elaine Paperman Woolner and Brenda Paperman Levy. Predeceased by her brothers- and sisters-in-law, Abe and Goldie Paperman, Max and Jeannie Paperman, Sally Drymer, Bella Slovsky, Annie Miller, and Sophie Payne. We were honored to have known and loved such a cultured, artistic and vibrant woman. Her strength and determination were unique, while her energy was unlimited. We were proud to call her our Mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. May she now eternally rest with the knowledge of how special she was to us. Funeral service from Paperman & Sons, 3888 Jean Talon St. W., on Monday, October 27 at 1:00 p.m. Burial at Mount Royal Cemetery, 1297 ch. de la Forêt. Ann Slodovnick

SLODOVNICK, Ann (née Portman). On Thursday, October 23, 2014. Beloved wife of Sam for sixty-five years. Loving mother and mother-in-law of Michael Mendy, Lela and Moshe Fishkin, Srulie, Raemona, Avi and Debbie (Siemiatycki). Cherished Bubbie of Dana, David, Lior and Shay (Juvan), Oren, and Mor Fishkin; Warren and Lisa, Bram and Julie Slodovnick, Mattea and Jason White; Paul, Noam, and Mark Slodovnick. Proud great-grandmother of Cooper Srulke White. Predeceased by her younger brother Osher. Sister-in-law of Susan Portman, and the late Rivka Slodovnick. Ann was genuinely treasured by her family. She led an exemplary life, was an exceptional force for good in the community, and was a tremendously talented singer. She will be greatly, greatly missed by all those whose lives she touched. In Ottawa, on Sunday, October 26, 2014, in his ninety-fourth year. Beloved father and father-in-law of Gladys and Mark Zarecki, Moshe and the late Evelyne Gruber. Dear brother of Philippe, Devorah, Jacqueline and Rosette. Cherished ‘Papie’ of Gad Zarecki, Elisha and Chani Zarecki, Miriam and Shlomo Friedman; David and Jonathan Gruber. Loving great-grandfather of Shamshon, Deena and Yaakov Friedman; Aliza and Dovid Ephraim Zaretsky. Long devoted friend of Claire Chartrand. A kind and generous, peace-loving man, he will be fondly remembered by all. Special thanks to the staff of Hillel Lodge, Ottawa for their care and compassion. Tova Alkallay

ALKALLAY, Tova (nee Taube Oiri Besprovanni). Peacefully, with dignity, on Saturday, October 25, 2014, in her ninety-fifth year. Beloved wife of the late Isaac Alkallay (2008) and the late Vaino Perälä (1947). Devoted and cherished mother of Rachel, the late Elie, and the late Ruthi Helena. Beloved daughter of the late Bertha Akselrod Oiri and granddaughter of the late Hasche Virahofsky Akselrod Stromer. Tova was the last surviving Jew of Viipuri, Finland, who will be sadly missed by her family and friends in Finland, Israel and the USA, and by all of those whose lives she touched. The family would like to thank Dr. Jaroslav Prchal and Dr. Raymond Sorge, as well as the nurses and staff of 5 Main and Oncology Day Centre at St. Mary’s Hospital for their exceptional care and compassion over the past five years. PEKOFSKY, Peter. Peacefully with strength and dignity, surrounded by his loving children, on Monday, October 27, 2014. Soul-mate and best friend of the late Marion Abrams. Loving and devoted father and father-in-law of Mark and Liz, Carrie and Rodney Byer, Neal and Phyllis. Most cherished “Papa” of Jessica, and Stephanie Byer; Ethan, and Daniel Pekofsky; and step-grandfather of Elran, Shawn and Vania, and Ryan Oded. Dear brother and brother-in-law of Ida and the late Norman Dworkin, Max and Ettie Pekofsky, the late Jack and the late Henrietta Pekofsky, the late Sadie and the late Shy Dubrofsky, the late Abe and the late Sophie Pinsky, and the late Ida and the late Jack Ruckenstein; and brother-in-law of Lillian and the late William Garber, Esther and Morris Katz, Nadie and Shirley Abrams, the late Tzippy and the late Harold Lapidus, and the late Samuel Abrams. He will be sadly missed by all those whose lives he touched. Sincere gratitude to the 5th floor staff of the Maimonides Geriatric Centre for their care and compassion, as well as to Dr Wolanski.
