Riva Deskin

DESKIN, Riva Rebecca (nee Mankofsky). After a courageous battle, on Friday, July 3, 2015. Beloved wife of Archie for sixty-five years. Cherished mother and best friend of Donna. Dearest sister of Pearl Friedman, the late Bernard Mankofsky, and the late Asher Mankofsky (the late Helen); and predeceased by her sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law Sydney and Mona Deskin, Anne and Abe Starke, Mary and Ben Shapiro, Cecile and Harold Jackson. Riva will be lovingly remembered by her nieces, nephews, family and many good friends. The family extends heartfelt gratitude for the excellent and compassionate care Riva received in the Palliative Care Unit of the Mount Sinai Hospital. Funeral service from Paperman & Sons, 3888 Jean-Talon St. W. on Sunday, July 5 at 1:00 p.m. Burial at the Haboneh Hahofshi Section, Kehal Israel Cemetery, D.D.O. Following burial, the family will receive condolences in the community room of 6565 Collins, C.S.L.

AINTABI, Zahia (Mireille) (née Lévy). After a lengthy battle, on Monday, June 29, 2015. Beloved wife of the late Jacques. Loving and devoted of mother and mother-in-law of Elliott and Yana, Saad and Ruthy, David and Rachel, Sam and Ann, Shirley and Jacob Bendayan, and the late Robert Haïm. Cherished “Teta” of Jason, Eric, Stephanie, Ivah, Ethan; Mireille, Leon, Robert; Jacques, Elie; Natasha, Daniel; Esther, Solomon, Joshua, and Ethan. Proud great-grandmother of Shana, Mina, Rina, Devorah, Yaacov, Hayley, Arianna, Nathaniel, and baby Aintabi. Dear sister and sister-in-law of Henry and Gamouli, Toufic and Aggie, Stella and the late Michel, Albert and Elisa, Gamalo and the late Moïse, Odette and the late Joseph, Ninette and the late Leon, and the late Moni. Mireille will be sadly missed by her many nieces, nephews, her dear caregiver, Cheryl, family, and all who knew her. The family would extend their heartfelt thanks to Dr. Golda Tradounsky, and nurses and staff of Mount Sinai Hospital for making her last days comfortable and serene. GLEASON, Shirley (nee Apple). Peacefully, surrounded by her loving family, on Saturday, July 4, 2015. Beloved wife of the late Dr. Clarence H. Gleason. Loving mother and mother-in-law of Monte Gleason, Sherry and Allan Hinman, Edmund Gleason and Hélène Bédard. Cherished grandmother of Tommy, Daniel, Jeremy, and Corey. Dear sister and sister-in-law of Harriet (Apple) and Armand Cymbalista, and the late Morton Apple; and sister-in-law of the late Alice Wagner. She will be sadly missed by her nieces, nephews and friends. Heartfelt thanks to the doctors, nurses, and staff of 7NW, the Cardiac Care Unit and the Emergency Department of the Jewish General Hospital for their exceptional care and compassion. Loving mother and mother-in-law of Sandra and Steven Mintz, Jeffrey Lann and Barbara Simons (the late Fern Lann), Ronald and Janice Lann. Cherished grandmother of Jodi and Michael Ginsberg, Robert and Lisa Mintz, Jennifer Mintz, Loren and Shannah Lann, Shawna and Eric Rubenstein, Myles, and Cassie Lann. Proud great-grandmother of Eryne, Joshua, Samantha, Maxwell, David, Sam, Dylan, and Jordan. Predeceased by her siblings and their spouses Abraham and Dorothy Isaif, Rae and Jack Lazoff, Janet and Albert Gladman; and by her brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law Bertha Karper, Lena and Benny Shear, Rose and Moe Segal, Hyman Lann. Dr. Norman Halpern

HALPERN, DR. NORMAN NELSON, M.D.C.M., F.R.C.S.C. At home, surrounded by his loving family, on Thursday, July 9, 2015, in his ninety-fourth year. Beloved husband of Gloria Victor for nearly sixty-four years. Devoted father and father-in-law of Sheryl Halpern and Norman Bazar, Doctors Lynn Halpern and Harry Schrager, Jack and Yelena Halpern. Cherished Grandpa of Sonia Halpern-Bazar; Sammy Schrager; Jonathan and Mickie Halpern. Loving brother and brother-in-law of Estelle and the late Dr. Maurice Schwartz, the late Florence and the late Max Rolbin; and brother-in-law of Christine and the late Herschel Victor, Graida and the late Arthur Victor. Son of the late Samuel and the late Mascha Halpern. He will be fondly remembered by his nieces, nephews, family and all those whose lives he touched. After attending Baron Byng High School, Norman went to Queen’s University to study Bacteriology where he was invited to study medicine. He graduated in 1948 with the Gold Medal in Medicine. He did his residency in Urology at Maimonides Hospital in Brooklyn, and married Gloria in 1951. Norman returned to Montreal where he was appointed to the staff of both the Jewish General and Royal Victoria Hospitals. He was an Associate Professor in the department of Urology at McGill University and was subsequently awarded Professor Emeritus. He retired after fifty-five years as a respected and dedicated surgeon. Norman was a community leader, active in his synagogue and many other causes. He was the one to whom everyone turned in times of crisis and celebration; he will be deeply missed. Funeral service from Paperman & Sons, 3888 Jean-Talon St. W. on Sunday, July 12 at 1:00 p.m. Burial at the Congregation Shaar Hashomayim Cemetery, 1250 chemin de la Forêt, Outremont. Howard Shiller

Cherished grandmother of Jesse, Cody, Adam, Ira, and Daniel. Dear sister and sister-in-law of Claire and the late Julius Krantzberg, Evelyn and the late Jake Krane, the late Morris and the late Gertrude Krantzberg, the late Issie Krantzberg; and sister-in-law of Mary and the late Tom Froimovitch, the late Max and the late Eunice Freemovitch. Dearest sister and sister-in-law of Harvey and Naomi Wieskopf, Mitch and Lynn Wieskopf, Larry and Bonnie Wieskopf, Sari and Roger Antebi; and sister-in-law of Elaine and Jerry Lipstein, Stephen and Madelyn Wiseman. Aunt of Marni and Marc, Trevor and Randee, Lainie and Michael, Lauren and Lawrence, Bram and Dana, Jeffrey and Elyse, Jennifer, Lara and Jonathan, Donna and Ed, Heidi and Arnold, Todd and Tiffany, Rhonda, and the late Elana. Cherished Zaidie of Adrianne Rubenstein, Andrew Simms, Max and Jessica Botner, and Sachi Botner. Proud great-grandfather of Ava and Noah Botner. Dear brother and brother-in-law of the late Edna and the late Hymie Greenfeld, brother-in-law of Miriam and the late Julius Hanek, the late Pearl and the late Mel Merovitz, Myrtle and the late Max Stark, Ros and Gaston Chappell. Henry will be sadly missed by his nieces, nephews, relatives and friends, and will be fondly remembered by all those whose lives he touched with his kindness and generosity.
