Esther Rath

RATH, Esther (née Muller). June 16, 1928 – July 25, 2012 Esther was a survivor from her birth until her passing, always exhibiting strength of character, courage, kindness and generosity. During the Holocaust she tenaciously held onto life, and as a survivor she was zealous in giving her family all of herself. She was the daughter of Shlomo and Bilah Muller, most loved and devoted wife of the late Mordechai Rath, and the extremely attentive and giving mother and mother-in-law of Sidney and Bev Rath, Peggy and Rabbi Zev Lanton, and the late Bella Chandler. She considered her grandchildren to be her most important treasures. Those treasures are Jordan, Jeremy, and Jillian Chandler; Erika, and Zachary Rath; Yossi, Shiri, Chaviva, and Chagit Lanton. Her latest treasures include her great grandchildren Dina, Baruch Mordechai and Leib Elimelech. During Mordechai and Bella’s illnesses, Esther looked after their needs and stood by their side untiringly, determined to give them the loving care they deserved, even taking care of Bella’s children and household for lengthy periods. As “Bubby Esther” she cooked and shopped for her grandchildren as no other. Bubby Esther will remain famous for her delicious meals and suitcases full of gifts. She loved the modern world but lived life with the true values of the Jewish “Eishis Chayil,” the epitome of the “Yiddisheh Mamma.” We want to express our most sincere gratitude to Judy and Yigal Epstein of Snowdon Residence; their care for Esther went above and beyond the call of duty. The family is also especially grateful for the exemplary care given to her by Vickie, Mary June, Elizabeth, Marichu, Maureen, Kathy, and all the wonderful staff of the Snowdon Residence. She was the adopted Bubby of busloads of students whom she accompanied on The March of the Living, sharing her inspirational experiences and indomitable strength with thousands of students and groups throughout Florida. We will always be grateful for the life lessons she gave us. Funeral service from Paperman & Sons, 3888 Jean Talon St. W., on Friday, July 27 at 10:00 a.m. Burial at the Beth Israel Congregation Section, Kehal Israel Cemetery, D.D.O. Shiva at 5160 MacDonald, #908 from 2:00 to 4:00 and 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. Contributions in Esther’s memory may be made to Canadian Magen David Adom for Israel, (514) 731-4400.
