Ethel Klatt
On Sunday, October 19, 2008, Ethel Klatt of Weyburn passed away at the age of 89 years. Ethel was predeceased by her parents, Michel and Rebecka Pinter; brothers and sisters: Pauline, Rose, Mike, Les, Julius and Mary; her husband, Ernie Klatt and a daughter, Linda. Ethel will be lovingly remembered by her three children: daughter, Bev (Ken) Doucette of Windthorst, son, Ron (Ruth) Klatt of Stoughton,and their son, Michel, and son Barry (Bev) Klatt of Regina, and their children, Alexandra and Nicholas; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Ethel was born September 5, 1919 at Karcag, Hungary. Her mother died when she was nine years old so Ethel was raised by her aunt and uncle in Turtleford. Later she took a hairdressing course in Saskatoon. She worked as a hairdresser in various places such as Winnipeg, MB, Thunder Bay, ON, Dawson Creek, BC, Calgary, AB, and was owner-operator of her own shop at Kipling. She met and married Ernie Klatt November 10, 1944 at the Presbyterian Church in Kipling. They first lived at Nottingham, Sask, then moved to Handsworth, where they farmed for close to 50 years. Ethel loved to oil paint, often doing it late at night when her children were asleep. In 1996 they moved to Weyburn, and Ethel became an active member of Zion Lutheran Church. She will be missed by all she knew and loved. A Memorial Service was held Monday, October 27 at 11:00 a.m. from Zion Lutheran Church, Weyburn with Pastor Martin Olson officiating. Interment followed in Handsworth Cemetery, Handsworth, Sask. Donations may be made in memory of Ethel to the Zion Lutheran Church, Weyburn. George Edwin Marlowe
George Edwin Marlowe (Norbraten) born to Gunner and Gwenth (Ashdown) Norbraten Marlowe, on October 28, 1932 at Southey. He passed from this life September 28, 2008 at Tisdale. He took his schooling at Brier View, Peesane and Girwwod. George farmed NE of Crooked River on N1/2 21-45-12-W2 from 1953 to 1976. He also worked in the bush and mines of northern Saskatchewan in the off seasons. On July 6, 1973 George married Esther Mary (Olmstead) Duncan and her 10 children. Of which five of the kids moved north with George and Esther. They lived on the farm until George had an auction and sold the farm, at which time they moved in Crooked River. George decided to change occupations and became a plumber and gas fitter; he took his education in SIAST at Saskatoon. From 1976 to 2006 he was a plumber for the government and several surrounding communities. George eventually moved into the Cedar Villa Apartments in Tisdale in 2003. He very much enjoyed the trips to the Co-op where he visited with everybody over a cup of coffee. He also enjoyed his Wednesday grocery trips to the Extra Foods and lunches at Gus'. George was predeceased by his father Gunner Norbraten (March 1934), step father Neal Marlowe (May 1962), mother Gwenth Marlowe (May 1983), wife Esther Marlowe (September 1995), grandson Anthony Ereth (June 1994), step son Barry (December 2004) and sister Patricia Dimmick (November 2005), nephew Paul Marlowe. Left to cherish his memory are his step children; Wayne, Allan (Rose), Kathy (Ron), Vernon (Lydia), Earl, Joyce (Eric), Isabelle (Brian), Marlene (Ivan), and David, daughter-in-law Barb, 23 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. Also brother Keith (Edith) Marlowe, sister Nora (Paul) Gambling, brothers-in-law, Pat Orland Dimmick and Roy (Karen) Olmstead, and sisters-in-law, Alice (Garnet) Kerr and Sheila Olmstead, as well as numerous nieces, nephews and friends. Funeral service was held Wednesday, October 1, at Crooked River Cemetary, Crooked River, SK. Honourary Bearers were all who knew and loved George. Interment took place at Crooked River Cemetary. Donations may be made to the Kinsmen Telemiracle as a token of remembrance.
Donald Alexander Turner
On Tuesday, December 19th, 2006, Donald Alexander Turner passed away at the age of 86 years. Donald was predeceased by an infant brother, Hugh Turner; brother, Wallace Turner; parents, Alexander and Grace Turner; son-in-law, Alex Miller and sister-in-law, Myrtle Brady. Donald will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 66 years, Elva Turner and their family, two daughters: Shirley Miller and Sharon Turner, grandfather to Shelley Miller-Hertes (Keith), Bruce (Shannon) Miller and Aaron (Geri) Fettes; great grandfather to Nikole Miller, Cody Miller, Logan Hertes, Kyle Hertes, Justin Hertes, Jordan Hnatiw, Demi Hnatiw, Brandon Hnatiw, Mathew Fettes and Riley Fettes; one sister, Sheila (Roy) Jones; sisters-in-law, June Carr and Marjorie Domes, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Don was born May 17, 1920 in Yellow Grass, Sask. He grew up in Yellow Grass with his brother Wallace and sister Sheila. He attended Yellow Grass and McTaggart schools. H talked of riding the pony to school. At seventeen years of age, Don started farming. The winters of 1937 and 1938 were spent in Miami, Manitoba with his uncles, where he looked after cattle and played hockey. During World War II, Don was in the Army Reserve. On October 4, 1940, Don married Elva Campbell in Yellow Grass. This was a double wedding with Elva's sister and brother-in-law. Don and Elva farmed in the McTaggart area from 1937 to 1983. Don had cattle and pigs along with grain farming to supplement their income. Don assisted his daughters, Shirley and Sharon, with raising their calves in the 4-H Club. After playing hockey in the winter and baseball in the summer, Don began curling in 1945. As a new curler, he offered to help 'Ice Maker" Harry Church in Weyburn at the old rink. Later he became involved in making draws and ice for many curling events. Don was continually involved in the community. In his early years, he became chairman of the McTaggart School Board, co-chair to build the McTaggart Memorial Hall, chairman of the Coal and Hardware Store, and served on the McTaggart Cemetery Board. Don continued his community life, becoming president of the Weyburn Curling Club in 1960 and Secretary-Manager of the Weyburn Curling Club for ten years. Don coached his daughters in their high school curling, and became an Honorary Life Member of the Weyburn Curling Club. In 1972, Don received the "Scotty Richardson Award" for his contribution to curling. In 1973 Don was on the Silver Broom committee and chairman of International Day. In 1976 Don was host driver at the Regina Brier, and was again on the 1983 Silver Broom committee. Don and Elva attended ten Silver Broom curling championships. Don served on the executive of the Saskatchewan Curling Association for six years. In 1974, Don and Elva started the curling museum from their collection of memorabilia. When the museum outgrew their home, the Turner Curling Museum moved to the city property at 504 - 5th Street in Weyburn. The Museum was inducted into the Wall of Fame at the Sooline Historical Museum in Weyburn. In 2005 the museum was honored in the builder category of the Saskatchewan Hall of Fame. In 1998 Don was enshrined in the Ottawa based Governor General's Curling Club. Don's other accomplishments include: president of the Weyburn Agricultural Society in 1965, Secretary-Manager of the Agricultural Society for two years and being named an Honorary Life member of the Agricultural Society. Don was the chairman for the building committee for the new agricultural/curling building constructed in 1961.Don was a city alderman for two years and continued to follow civic politics throughout his years in Weyburn. Don's contribution to health care saw him serve on the Weyburn Union Hospital Board for ten years from 1963 to 1973. Don served as chair for six of the ten years. Don was honored for his community involvement by the Chamber of Commerce and received the "Golden Spike Award" in 1985. In the same year, Don chaired the first Weyburn Oil Show. Don and Elva lived on the farm near McTaggart from 1940 to 1983. Daughter, Shirley and son-in-law, Alex took over farming the land from Don and Elva. Even after Don retired, he continued to have a keen interest in how the crops were growing and how the harvest had gone. Don and Elva then resided on Woodlawn Crescent in Weyburn until 1990. They resided at their Hartney Avenue condo until the time of his passing. Don curled himself, but often related to others that his avid interest was in coaching and following the curling pursuits of his wife, daughters and grandchildren. Some of the great grandchildren are participating in curling as well. Don was proud of the careers and accomplishments of his children and grandchildren. He often asked how our work was going and if we were keeping busy. Don maintained a keen interest in the hockey and other activities of his great grandchildren up until the time of his passing. He will be deeply missed by all he knew and loved.A Graveside Service was held Friday, December 22nd, 2006 at 11:00 a.m. from Hillcrest Cemetery, Weyburn, Sask. with Rev. John Ferrier officiating. Interment followed. The Active Pallbearers were: Brian Jones, Aaron Fettes, Bruce Miller, Roger Brady, Keith Hertes, Daryl Muirhead and Kelly Glaspey. Sebastian Heisler
HEISLER, Sebastian "Seb" Peter passed away on December 16, 2006 at the Weyburn General Hospital at the age of 83 years. Seb will be lovingly remembered by his children: Sandra (Brian) Bakken, Duane (Denise) Heisler and Deanna (Henry) Irwin; grandchildren: Scott (Susan) Benning, Laura (Jack) Diede, Grant Benning, Jeff Heisler, Angela Kostiuk, and Tammy Bloor (Jerry Chrest); ten great-grandchildren: Anneliese, Macgregor & Genevieve Benning; Emily, Jillian and Seth Diede; Katelyn and Timothy Kostiuk; and Zachary and Lexci Bloor-Chrest; his very special friend and devoted caregiver, Doris Meckum; brothers Matthew (Ruth), Jack (Marie); sisters Margaret Heisler, Kay Herauf, Phyllis (Marty) Wasser, sisters-in-law Helen Heisler, Martha Heisler, Mabel Lohse, LaVine Rivard, Dorothy Casler, Kay Casler and numerous nieces and nephews. Seb was predeceased by his wife, Laura in 1991, his son-in-law Brian Benning in 1999, three grandsons and one great-grandson in infancy, his parents Frank and Eva Heisler, siblings George, Peter (Kay), Thomas (Frances), Adam, Tony, Barbara (Chris) Young, Mary (John) Niedermayer as well as numerous brothers and sisters-in-law. Seb was born December 9, 1923, the seventh of 13 children born to Frank and Eva. He was raised on the farm in the Qu'Appelle area, where he worked until his late teens when he went to work in a foundry in Oshawa, Ontario. At the age of 21 he moved to Weyburn where he worked at various jobs, including the Weyburn Flour Mill, Soo Freight Trucking, and the Coop Feed Mill. It was while working at the Coop he met his wife, Laura Casler. Seb and Laura were married on November 4, 1946 in Weyburn, where they stayed and raised their family. In 1951 Seb began his 35 year career at the Saskatchewan Hospital in the powerhouse initially as a fireman, then as plumber's helper, and then as journeyman plumber. Once he retired in 1986 he had much more time to commit to his hobbies: carpentry and woodworking (he could build and/or fix anything!), gardening and nature, but most of all, music. Making music was a huge part of Seb's life; he played the guitar, harmonica and the accordian. He loved to make music; whether it jamming with his brother Matt, playing with his many musical friends, or entertaining as part of many bands over the years, including The Blue Tones, The Pioneers, and Mel and Friends. He was happiest when he was with the people he loved and playing his guitar. And when he didn't have his guitar with him, he whistled, so no matter where he was he was making music. Especially fortunate were the children in Seb's life. He took great pleasure in being with the little ones, entertaining them with music and laughter, building toys, and encouraging their interests. The fond memories he has created for generations with his hand built birdhouses, windchimes, "Christopher", children's furniture, and toys; fishing trips, old-time dance lessons, lots of music, and even more love, will always be held dearly in our hearts. Edna Elizabeth Lix
1919 - 2006
Edna Lix passed away peacefully at the Peter Lougheed Hospital, Calgary, AB on Friday, December 22, 2006 at the age of 87 years. She was predeceased by her parents Erick and Florence Erickson, her husband Nickolas; great granddaughter Christina; sisters Kathleen Buck and Winnifred McDougall; brothers in law, Joe Buck, Russ McFadden, Allen McDougall and Frank Shaw. Edna will be lovingly remembered by her son Erick (Ellen); and their children Danette (Don), Mike (Laurie), Audrey (Bryan); her daughter Diane (Jacques); and their daughter Suzanne; great grandchildren, Damara, Nickolas, Lisa, Christopher and Jake. She is also survived by her two sisters Dorothy McFadden, Weyburn and Evelyn Shaw, Regina; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Edna was born in Weyburn, SK on May 31, 1919 where she continued to live and raise her family. She worked at the Saskatchewan Souris Valley Hospital for many years until her retirement. Edna enjoyed her hockey and football as well as crafts, especially knitting for the family and friends. In 2002 she moved to Calgary to be near her family, where she lived until she was hospitalized in December 2006. At Edna's request, no funeral service will be held. Cremation entrusted to McInnis and Holloway's Eastside Memorial Chapel, Calgary, AB. A burial and memoriam will take place at a later date at the Green Acres Memorial Gardens in Weyburn, SK. AS an expression of sympathy memorial contributions may be made to the charity of the donor's choice.
Johan Asbjorn Svorkdal
"A job well done is its own reward." Johan Asbjorn Svorkdal, August 2, 1932-December 27, 2006. Surround-ed by family, Johan slipped quietly away in the early hours December 27 at St. Joseph's Hospital in Estevan. Johan, 74, is sadly missed and fondly remembered by his loving wife Evelyn, son Brad, his wife Neena Gupta and daughter Kirsten, son Nelson, his wife Jennifer Scarth, children Josef, Annika, Bjorn and Jakob, sisters Sylvia Kemp and Karen Rundberg and their families. Evelyn's siblings, Carl Jensen (deceased), Thelma Anderson (deceased), Vivian Weber, Lyla Carlsen, Lawrence Jensen, Mae Nielsen, Lloyd Jensen and their families, were a big part of Johan's life, and also miss him deeply. Johan was predeceased by his father Josef and mother Signe. Johan's steadfast commitment to family and community touched everyone. People from all walks of life looked to Johan's open door for a trusted confidante and generous benefactor, as well as a place at his table. All were welcomed. Professionally, Johan was the pharmacist in Stoughton for 37 years, where his customer service and attention to detail were legendary and echoed in everything he did. Johan was also a talented journeyman carpenter and craftsman, as evidenced by his exquisite functional reproductions of vintage furniture, farm machinery and horse drawn wagons. Many facilities and institutions in rural communities exist only through volunteer drive and the initiative of community leaders. Johan was instrumental in establishing and maintaining the White Lake Golf Course and the Stoughton Public Swimming Pool, the Stoughton Community Rink and the founding board of the local Credit Union. He was a tireless supporter of Zion Lutheran Church, local hockey and baseball organizations, the Stoughton public school board and the Stoughton and District Museum. Johan and Evelyn retired to the family farm in Estevan and rapidly immersed themselves in all aspects of church and community life. Their annual threshing bee was Johan and Evelyn's signature event that showcased their teamwork, and paid homage to the spirit and tradition of collective prairie harvest on the farm. A proud Canadian, Johan's Norwegian heritage was never far from the surface and formed the basis of many spirited national debates. A celebration of Johan's life was held at 5:00 p.m. Saturday December 30 at Trinity Lutheran Church, 738 2nd Street, Estevan. Arrangements are with Boire Funeral Home, Estevan. Kevin Symington
Symington, Kevin E., age 50 years, late of Radville, Sask. passed away at the Regina General Hospital on December 24, 2006. Kevin was born May 24, 1956 at Port Arthur, Ontario. He moved to Winnipeg at age 14, and after graduating from high school, attended Red River Community College, where he graduated with a degree in Business Administration. During his working years, he worked in retail and sales for various home building companies. For the past 3 years, he was employed with Gieno Window and Doors of Calgary, with 90% of his time being spent traveling the United States. Kevin is survived by his loving wife of 19 1/2 years, Ellen and their son, Kent; brother Doug (Debbie) and children, Travis, Derrin, Jessica; mother-in-law, Margaret Punton, brother-in-law, Robert (Colleen) Punton and son Preston; sister-in-law, Rev. Lois Punton (Rev. Frank Lewis) and son Jackson, as well as numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. He was pre-deceased by his mother Francis Ruth and father Gibson Emerson and older brother Gary Kent Symington, and father-in-law, Walter Punton. A Memorial Service will be held Friday, January 5, 2007 at 2:00 p.m. from the Radville United Church, Radville, Sask. with Pastor Shelby Kinrade officiating. Murray Carman Wilkinson
Murray "Bus" Carman Wilkinson from Weyburn (formerly Yellow Grass), passed away on Saturday, December 30, 2006 at the age of 77 years. Bus was born on June 26, 1929 in Weyburn. He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Audrey (Metheral) Wilkinson and their family, son, Kevin Wilkinson (Judy) of Livelong, and their children Brodie and Zenon; daughter, Cheryl Dene Wilkinson-Scott of Calgary, AB and her children, Monte and Breanne; son, Rodney Wilkinson (Sansanee) of Phuket, Thailand; sister, Elaine (Jack) Bray of Regina, brother, Don (Dorothy) Wilkinson of Goodwater, brother-in-law, Ron (Tory) Metheral of Weyburn, sisters-in-law, Marge Heintzman of Weyburn and Syl Metheral-Sinclair of Calgary, along with numerous nieces, nephews and friends. Bus was predeceased by his parents, Victor and Ruth Wilkinson. Bus was raised and educated in Yellow Grass and lived the majority of his life on the family farm near Yellow Grass, retiring to Weyburn in 1998. Along with farming, Bus was a journeyman carpenter, building numerous houses and quonsets throughout the area. Bus was actively involved with both the Yellow Grass United Church and the Grace United Church in Weyburn. Bus's greatest joy was his devotion to his family, friends and community. Funeral service was held Wednesday, January 3, 2007 at 2:00 p.m. from Grace United Church, Weyburn, with Rev. John Ferrier officiating. Interment followed in Yellow Grass Cemetery. All those in attendance were considered to be honourary pallbearers. The active pallbearers were: Warren and Ron Wilkinson, Tyler Metheral, Ken Fortner, Dale Watson and Allan Steer. Rev. Matilda McTaggart
On Monday, January 1, 2007, Rev. Matilda "Tillie" McTaggart, of Weyburn Special Care Home, passed away at the Weyburn General Hospital at the age of 89 years. Predeceased by her parents, James and Lillian McTaggart; sisters, Jean Bowditch, Edith Pederson, Margaret McTaggart and Anne Sedwick, brothers, Stanley and William McTaggart, and nephews, Richard and Neal McTaggart. Matilda is survived by one brother, Robert (Lucille) McTaggart of Calgary, AB as well as numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. "Tillie" was born May 8, 1917 at Colgate. After obtaining her grade 12, she was employed doing general household duties, and enjoyed reading and doing puzzles. She then attended Bethel Bible School in Saskatoon. Upon graduation, she entered the ministry with her sister, Margaret, pastoring several churches in Saskatchewan. They lived in several small communities in Saskatchewan at various times throughout her life. Most of her active life was involved in church ministry. Matilda lived a life wholly dedicated to serving her Lord and Savior. Funeral service was held Saturday, January 6, at 3:00 p.m. from Silver Heights Bible Church, Weyburn, with Pastor Bryan Keough officiating. Interment followed in Hillcrest Cemetery, Weyburn. The active pallbearers were: Edward Baird, Rod Brown, Jim Peters, Ken Fox, Kent Pierce and Cliff Gallinger. For friends so wishing, donations may be made in her memory to a charity of choice. Dorothy Mae Bedore
Dorothy Mae Bedore (nee Adamson) passed away peacefully at Regina General Hospital on December 27, 2006 with her family by her side. Dorothy was born May 13, 1934 in Ernfold. Dorothy was predeceased by her son Micheal Bedore, her parents Yuburn and Elizabeth Adamson; her sister Audrey Parr; her brother Donald Adamson; her husband Cliff Bedore; her granddaughter Christa Campbell and her great grandchildren Chardae Bedore and Lawson Bedore. Left to celebrate her life are her children: Carol (Craig) Campbell, Prince Albert, Robert (Janet) Bedore, Weyburn, Kathy Miller, Regina, Garry (Tracey) Bedore, Weyburn and Brenda Bedore, Weyburn. Her beloved grandchildren Shanna (Danny) Bedore, Tammy Bedore, Todd (Angela) Bedore, Courtney (Kelly) Vandevord, Christopher Campbell, Joshua (Crystal) Bedore, Ryan Bedore, Brett (Amanda) Bedore, Curtis Bedore, Erik Bedore, Teri Miller, Ben Bedore and Dillion Kronberger. Her adoring great grandchildren Sheryse, Haylie and Mauriah Bedore, Kayla, Terell, Anthony, Tristan and Keigan Bedore, Dakken, Sloane and Khloe Bedore, Joshua, Emily and Hailey Bedore, and Carson Campbell. Her nephews, Howard Parr, Darrel and Lee Adamson and special niece Debbie Tollefson. Dorothy had a way of making each and every one of us feel special and loved. She cherished the time she spent with her grandkids. They were the loves of her life. When she wasn't doting on her family you could find her indulging in one of her "passions", curling. At any given time you could find her visiting with the "Girls" huddled around the TV cheering for their team. Dorothy's baking was legendary. If family or friends were coming to visit you were sure to find your favorite goodies when you arrived. When she did take time for herself you could find her doing one of crafts, needlepoint patterns, knitting afghans or crocheting dollies. Dorothy lived her life to the fullest of her ability. She will be remembered with love and happy memories, for the amazing soul that she was. The family would like to make a special acknowledgement to the "Girls:" Rita Hallberg, Margret Hoskings, Carole Watson and Lil Tribiger. You are the reasons why we had so many extra years to share with her. She loved each of you more then you will ever know. She left here knowing how much she was loved and cared for. Thank You.
