It is with deep sorrow and gratitude the family of Irene May (Epp) Funk of the Mennonite Nursing Home, Rosthern Sk, formerly of Laird, announces her passing at the age of 85. Irene was born March 5, 1927 to parents Cornelius and Annie (Mierau) Epp of Langham. She is predeceased by her parents, husband Walter, brother Elmer Epp, sister Luella Thiessen, in-laws Benno Regier, John Thiessen, Abe and Helene Funk, Edna and Eric Neufeldt, Verner and Olga Funk, Eric and Kay Funk, John Enns, and nephew Doug Epp. She is survived by her children, Dorothea Funk, Karen Funk, Ken (Marian) Landis Funk, Eldon (Susan Jeske) Funk; grandchildren, Kate Landis Funk, Nathan Landis Funk, Annthea Jeske Funk, and sister Velma Regier, brother Archie (Helen) Epp, and sisters-in-law Doris Epp and Selma Enns. Visitation will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, September 26, 2012 at the Mennonite Nursing Home auditorium, Hwy 11, Rosthern SK. The Funeral Service will be held Thursday, September 27, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. at the Tiefengrund Rosenort Mennonite Church north of Laird with interment to follow in Tiefengrund Cemetery. Arrangements are entrusted to Funk’s Funeral Home, Rosthern SK.
Abram Funk
June 15, 1916 – Sept. 16, 2012
Abe Funk left from this life on Sunday, Sept. 16 at the Rosthern Hospital. In his last days he was surrounded by the love of his large family and legion of friends. From 2005 to the time of his passing he made his home in Pineview Manor at the Rosthern Mennonite Youth Farm. Abe was born to John and Paula (Friesen) Funk in the Hamburg District, NW of Laird. He enjoyed growing up on the farm, his time at the Hamburg School, and his wholehearted participation in family and community life. He was baptized in the Rosenort Mennonite Church at Tiefengrund in 1935. During WWII Abe served as a Conscientious Objector working in the Banff/Kananaskis area, a time he called his university for life. In 1946 Abe married Helene Dyck, daughter of J.J. and Renata Dyck. They took over the Dyck family farm near Laird and embraced each other’s clans. There they raised their family, nurturing and cherishing each new member. They farmed until Abe’s 85th year. In 2002 Abe and Helene moved to Rosthern where they lived together until Helene died in Aug. 2003. Abe was an active and faithful supporter of his community, co-ops and his church. He served on the Boards of many organizations, including 28 years as Chair of the Laird Wheat Pool Committee, a founding Board member of the Sask Valley Credit Union, and Board Chair of the Rosthern Mennonite Home for the Aged. He travelled to Europe for a Mennonite World Conference, to East Africa with the Canadian Foodgrains Bank, and to Germany, Poland, and Russia for a roots tour. In 2006 Abe felt honoured to sign the MOU between the Young Chippewayan First Nation, and the Lutheran and Mennonite families who settled on the former Stony Knoll I.R. #107 N.W. of Laird. Abe was a friend to all he met. He was a humble person who enjoyed life fully and gladly served his family, his faith, and the hungry and poor of the world. Left to carry on his legacy are his children Raymond (Shirley Falstead), Carla (Mike) Sheridan, Lorna (Don) Hauta, Wayne (Jeanette Schlosser); his grandchildren Rebecca Funk (Adrian Johnson), Abe (Nicole) Funk, Yvonne Funk (Trevor Barney), Jessica Sheridan, Anna (Andrew) Robertshaw, Tarya (Jamie) Hough, Quentin (Erin Brady) Hauta, Odessa Schlosser, Sophie Schlosser, Donna (Craig) Johnson, Cindi (Rob) Davies, Aaron Schutte, Renee (Ryan) Haberstock; his great grandchildren Denis, Aldous, Caius, Abby, Riley, Devon, Thomas, Colby, Emily, Jack, Kelsey, Joel, Emily, Mara, Haley, Megan, Cameron, and Lexis; his sister Selma Enns; and his sister-in-law Irene Funk. He was predeceased by his loving wife and partner, Helene; his brothers Verner, Eric and Walter; his sister Edna Neufeldt; his in-laws Eric Neufeldt, Olga Funk, Kay Funk, and John Enns. A time of viewing and sharing of Abe’s life will be held on Wednesday, September 19, 2012 at 7:00 P.M. at Rosthern Mennonite Nursing Home Auditorium. The Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, September 20, 2012 at 2:00 P.M. at the Tiefengrund Rosenort Mennonite Church, north of Laird with Pastor Russ Friesen officiating. Interment will take place in Tiefengrund Cemetery. Abe requested that Gifts of Remembrance go to the Mennonite Central Committee, 600-45th Street West, Saskatoon, S7L 5W9. Wilbert Klassen
January 9, 1939 – September 15, 2012
The death of Wilbert Willy Klassen, age 73 years of North Vancouver, B.C. and formerly of Rosthern occurred at Royal University Hospital, Saskatoon. He is survived by his: three daughters: Theresa, Tammy, and Treya; 7 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild; siblings, Lillian Larson, Art Klassen, Ruth (Ray) Keehn, Evelyn Friesen, Eleanor Bergen, Esther (Victor) Shupe, Clarence (Trudy) Klassen, and Rose (Ken) Warlow. He was predeceased by his: wife, Patricia; parents, William I. and Alvina Klassen; sister, Florence Kometscher; and brothers-in-law, Marcel Kometscher, Howard Larson, Abe Friesen, and John Bergen. There will not be a service in Saskatchewan. Family will bury Wilbert’s ashes next to his wife, Patricia in B.C. at a later date. Arrangements are in care of Funk’s Funeral Home, Rosthern.
Walter Andres
August 26, 1936 – September 13, 2012
The death of Walter Andres, age 76 years of Rosthern occurred at his residence with his family by his side on September 13, 2012. He is survived by his loving wife, Hannah; five children, Charlotte Andres, Lisa Andres, Della Braden, Michele (Kevin) Rast, Greg (Amy) Andres; numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren; siblings, Mary (Eugene) Loewen, Carolyn (Archie) Loewen, and Laura (James) Beherns. He was predeceased by his parents, Abram and Anna Andres; and parents-in-law Jacob and Katharina Neudorf. The Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday, September 18, 2012 at 2:00 P.M. at the Rosthern Mennonite Church, 3016 – 5th Street. Interment will take place in Rosthern Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to a charity of your choice. Arrangements are in care of Funk’s Funeral Home, Rosthern.
Howard Lockerby
June 20, 1940 – September 13, 2012
The death of Howard Lockerby, age 72 years of Rosthern occurred on September 13, 2012 at Royal University Hospital, Saskatoon. He is survived by his loving wife, Evelyn; sisters, Alice Page, Diane Machart and numerous nieces, nephews and friends. He was predeceased by his parents, Ernest and Elizabeth Lockerby; sisters, Joyce (Don) Affleck, Lorna (Wes) Robinson, Shirley (Melvin) Nash; brothers-in-law, Willard Page, Howard Machart; parents-in-law, Henry and Mary Trippel; and brother-in-law Bob Trippel. The Funeral Service will be held on Monday, September 17, 2012 at 2:00 P.M. at the Trinity Lutheran Church, Rosthern with The Rev. Michael Diegel officiating. Interment will take place in Rosthern Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the S.P.C.A., 519, 45th Street West, Saskatoon S7L 5Z9. Arthur Albert Heppner of Rosthern Mennonite Nursing Home, formerly of Waldheim, SK passed away peacefully in his sleep on Sunday, May 18, 2014. He was predeceased by their eldest son Stuart (1967), his parents Henry M. and Agatha (Epp) Heppner, brothers Elmer (Sarah), Wilfred (Savilla), Clarence, Harold and sisters Margaret (Rod) Junkin and Vonda (Bill) Bergen. Art is survived by his beloved wife of 67 years, Mary Heppner; sons Murray (Wendy), Wayne (Donna); daughters, Davie (Ray) Myers, Jean (Mark) Stewart; 7 grandchildren, Kraig (Sarah), Bruce, Joel, Jordan, Mark (Tamara), Marshall, Kristi (Dan) Purdie-Smith and 3 great grandchildren, Dane, Blake, and JJ; sisters, Matilda (Eugene) Thiessen, sisters-in-law Eileen Heppner and Marjorie Heppner. The Interment Service will be held on Friday, May 23, 2014 at 3:00 P.M. at Salem Cemetery. The Service of Remembrance will follow at 4:00 P.M. at Salem Church, Waldheim, SK. Nestor Rybchinski
February 15, 1929 – May 15, 2014
The family of Nestor Rybchinski is saddened to announce his passing Thursday, May 15, 2014 at the age of 85 years. He was predeceased by his parents, Nick and Teresa, wife Phyllis, brothers Leo, Alex and Edward, sisters-in-law Pearl and Kathleen and brother-in-law James. His memory will be cherished by his children, Lynne Carmichael, Donna (David) Greenway, Cliff (Kathy) Rybchinski, Paul (Vicki) Rybchinski, Debbie (Rod) Massett, Gord (Kim) Rybchinski; 11 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren; his siblings Paul, Pauline, Mike, Josie, Joe and Janice; sisters-in-law Gail Reid, Louise Zazula and brother-in-law John Baduik. His earliest work began with a haying expeditions in Ontario; threshing in Wakaw and then at the Vancouver shipyards while still a teenager. He worked on ranches in Alberta, then for a building moving company for a number of years. He would recall moving a house across the St. Louis Bridge. He farmed both grain and livestock in Elstow before joining PCS Allan until his retirement. Retirement years were spent in Wakaw until his passing. He learned to play guitar at an early age and with a voice belted out lyrics and played guitar with great abandon. Nestor will be well remembered for his love of interesting story telling and unique phrases that were truly all his own. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Lung Association of Saskatchewan, 1231 – 8th Street East Saskatoon, SK S7K 0S5. The Service of Remembrance for family and friends will be held on Wednesday, May 21, 2014, at 1:30 p.m. at Lawson Heights Pentecostal Assembly, 233 Pinehouse Dr., Saskatoon.
