March 28, 1920 - August 6, 2007
Stewart was born March 28, 1920 at Balconnel, Forfar County, Scotland to Henry and Joan Springthorpe (nee Stewart).
Injured at birth, Stewart spent a lifetime handicapped by slightly deformed left side and a noticeable stutter.
Stewart came to Toronto, Canada with his mother and father as an infant.
When Stewart was about one year old, his father abandoned him and his mother in Cobalt, Ontario.
For the next few years, Stewart and his mother lived in Toronto, Winnipeg, Lang, and Rouleau, SK, with his mother’s brothers or sisters while his mother worked as a cook.
In 1926, his mother married Chester Small, a farmer and grain buyer, at Wilcox, SK.
Stewart received his education at a country school and at the school associated with Notre Dame College in Wilcox.
He started doing farm work that he could handle at about 14 or 15 years of age.
The family moved to a farm near Saltcoats in 1937, and Stewart became a fulltime farm hand on the family farm.
His stepfather, Chester, passed away in 1946, and in 1948, Stewart and his mother moved to Hanley where he helped operate the Silver Bell Café.
In 1953, he and his mother, who had married Ed Stephenson, moved to Saskatoon, where Stewart became active at the Saskatchewan Abilities Council, in the social activities and as a minibus driver.
He went back to farming, which he enjoyed very much, at Kenaston, on the farm of one of the Abilities Councilors, Cliff Wood.
Stewart worked with Cliff for nearly 20 years before retiring in 1981.
Stewart spent his early retirement years in various activities with the Abilities Council, reading, long walks, and a yearly circuit-visiting relatives.
With the death of his mother in 1983, Stewart moved to a seniors’ high-rise apartment where he was active in the social life of the building.
He loved to sit downstairs and visit with the other tenants, and walk downtown for his meals.
In 1999, he moved to a seniors’ high-rise in Prince Albert to be near his sister, Lenora, and family.
When he could no longer comfortably look after his needs, he moved to a home care facility, Pat’s Care Home.
His last year was spent in declining health in Pineview Home, Prince Albert.
Stewart passed away peacefully on August 6, 2007, with his brother and sister at his side.
Stewart was predeceased by his mother, Joan Stephenson, and his brother-in-law, Murray Smith.
He is survived by his sister, Lenora Smith of Prince Albert, and his brother, Doug Small of Mission, Texas, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
