Mr. Modest Gafencu
May 30, 1927 - September 19, 2007

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Modest Gafencu at the age of 80 years. Modest was born in the Kayville district to Niculai (born in Parahauti, Suceava, Romania) and Mary (Tatar) Gafencu (born in district of Rouleau, SK).
He attended Excellis School in Kayville completing his grade 8 education. He worked on the family farm and eventually purchased his own land. On July 20, 1963, Modest was united in marriage to Marion Piluk from the Foam Lake area and they made their home in Regina where they raised two boys. Also in 1963, Modest became employed at Wascana Centre Authority as a labourer. It was over his years of dedicated service that earned him the role of Supervisor until his retirement in 1992. Modest continued farming until 2000 when he sold the farm, just maintaining some hay land. In their senior years, Modest and Marion enjoyed special time together when they took an Alaskan cruise. Modest will respectfully be remembered for his unconditional love and devotion to his family, cherishing much time spent with his loving grandchildren. Endearment for his special companion, dog Rahja, brought him much joy. He had a fondness of old-time western books and movies, and loved hunting and fishing with his close buddies and two sons. It brought a spark to his eye every time he would recite a hunting or fishing story. He belonged to the Frontiersmen and had a special interest serving as an Auxiliary Constable for the R.C.M.P. Modest was a strong upright man who worked hard all his life to provide for his family. He was especially proud of his Romanian heritage and culture and was a long time and proud parishioner of St. George Orthodox Cathedral in Regina, SK.
He was predeceased by his parents; stepmother Mary (Donison) Gafencu; brothers Art and George Gafencu; sister-in-law Pauline Gafencu.
Modest leaves to mourn and cherish his memory his loving wife, Marion, of 44 years; two sons, Dale (Shelley) Gafencu and step-grandson Breckan of Wolseley, SK and Rick (Fawn) Gafencu and grandchildren Donavin and Rikki of Regina; brothers Dan (Doreen) Gafencu of Lumsden and James Gafencu of Regina; sisters-in-law Anne Gafencu of Regina and Marilyn Gafencu of New Jersey, USA; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, friends and neighbours.
A FUNERAL RITE will be held on Monday, September 24, 2007 at 10:00 a.m. at St. George Orthodox Cathedral, 2005 Edgar Street in Regina with Reverend Father Cosmin Sicoe officiating. INTERMENT to follow at Regina Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation Canada or the Palliative Care Unit, Pasqua Hospital. Heartwarming and special thanks to the nurses and doctor’s of ICU and the Palliative Care Unit as well as numerous family members and friends for their love, support, and compassion during this difficult time.
Arrangements are entrusted to Regina Funeral Home.

Mrs. Janet Sylvia (nee Watson) Keen
November 19, 1916 - September 13, 2007

It is with great sadness to announce the passing of Sylvia Keen.
Sylvia was born in Silton, Saskatchewan and grew up on her parent’s farm. After graduation, she found employment and attended Business College in Regina, where she met her future husband, Alfred Keen. Sylvia was predeceased by Al in September, 1986.
She is survived by her children Wayne (Donna), Gary, and Silvie, and granddaughter Courtney, brothers William and Thomas Watson, and sister Dorothy Wilson.
After her marriage to Al in 1941, the couple eventually moved to Alberta to raise their family. In 1951, they built their home in Montgomery, where Sylvia still resided until very recently. Remembered for her quiet strength and sacrifice as a wife and mother, and for her dry sense of humour, Sylvia will be eternally loved and never forgotten.
The family wishes to thank the staff of the Bow View Manor for the exceptional care and hugs they provided to our Mother in her final four months of life. Our heartfelt thanks also to Dr. Joan Huang.
A Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, September 20, 2007 at 2:00 p.m. at Leyden’s Funeral Home, followed by a Graveside Service at Queens Park Cemetery.
