Mrs. Marion Gafencu
May 30, 1932 - November 4, 2007

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Marion Gafencu at the age of 75 years. Marion was born in the Foam Lake district to Michael Piluk (of the Foam Lake district) and Jean Worniuk (of the Insinger district). She attended Foam Lake School, completing her grade 10 education. Marion worked on the family farm near Foam Lake, waitressed at Boston Café in Yorkton, worked as a Nurses’ Aide at the Grey Nuns Hospital in Regina, and a Nurse’s Aide at Pioneer Village in Regina. On July 20, 1963, Marion was united in marriage to Modest Gafencu of the Kayville district and they made their home in Regina where they raised two boys. Marion continued her employment at Pioneer Village until her retirement in 1997. She thoroughly enjoyed working there with all her colleagues and developed a keen interest in the medical field. Her aspirations to become a Registered Nurse spurned her on to upgrade her education by taking night classes and earning her grade twelve diploma. In their senior years, Marion and Modest enjoyed special time together when they embarked on an Alaskan cruise. Marion’s unconditional love and devotion to her family was her priority. She cherished time spent with her two sons, their families, and best friend Liz. She enjoyed taking care of her grandchildren, was an avid gardener, fabulous traditional Ukrainian cook, loved playing cards, crocheting, and knitting. Marion was a modest Ukrainian woman with a generous and kindred spirit who welcomed company with her wonderful baking, cooking, and never failing to offer a rum and coke. Her unselfish, caring personality, quick wit, and twinkle in her eye will forever be memorable and sadly missed by everyone. She had a deep faith with God and was a long time and proud parishioner of St. George Orthodox Cathedral in Regina, SK.
She was predeceased on September 19, 2007 by her loving husband, Modest, of 44 years; parents; stepfather Peter Piluk; brothers-in-law Walter Honeywich, Art Gafencu and George Gafencu and sister-in-law Pauline Gafencu.
Marion leaves to mourn and cherish her memory her two sons, Dale (Shelley) Gafencu and step-grandson Breckan of Wolseley, SK and Rick (Fawn) Gafencu and grandchildren Donavin and Rikki of Regina; twin sister Eleanor Honeywich of Foam Lake; sisters Gladys (Terry) Harper of El Dorado Hills, California, Hilda (Orest) Streelasky of the Foam Lake area, Vivian Harper of Langley, BC and Gena Piluk of Calgary, AB; best friend for over 50 years, Liz Krushelniski of Regina; sisters-in-law Ann Gafencu of Regina and Marilyn Gafencu of New Jersey, USA; brothers-in-law Dan (Doreen) Gafencu of Lumsden and James Gafencu of Regina; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, friends and neighbours.
A FUNERAL RITE will be held on Wednesday, November 7, 2007 at 10:00 a.m. at St. George Orthodox Cathedral, 2005 Edgar Street, Regina, SK with Reverend Father Cosmin Sicoe officiating. Marion will be laid to rest alongside her beloved husband Modest at Regina Memorial Gardens Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Lung Association of Saskatchewan or the Palliative Care Unit, Pasqua Hospital. Heartwarming and special thanks to the nurses and doctors of the Palliative Care Unit, Grace Hospice, as well as numerous family members and friends for their love, support, and compassion during this difficult time.
Arrangements are entrusted to Regina Funeral Home.
