Mrs. Ethel Grace McKenzie (nee, Barber) passed away at Extendicare on Tuesday September 25, 2001 at the age of 91 years. Ethel was born at Boharm on December 18, 1909, her parents having moved that year from Ontario. Her family lived in the Buffalo Lake district from 1914 to 1919, then returned to farm again at Boharm. Ethel attended Normal School in Moose Jaw then taught at South Lake School north of Tuxford and Thompson’s Lake School in the Archive District. She married Ezra McKenzie in 1935 and they lived on their farm in the Tuxford area until retiring to Moose Jaw in 1976. Ethel enjoyed knitting, needlework, baking, and crossword puzzles. She also enjoyed playing bridge with her friends. She was an active member of Wesley United Church UCW and later a member of St.Andrew’s United Church. Her family was always her priority and her greatest source of pride. Predeceased by her husband Ezra in 1982, her parents Wesley and Grace Barber; her sister, Marion Brown; her brother, Roy Barber; eight brothers-in-law; five sisters-in-law; and a great-niece. Ethel is survived by her daughter, Marilyn (Terry) Myles; her grandson: Darren (Tanya) Myles and their son, Justin – Regina; granddaughter, Shelley (Daryl) Newman – Saskatoon; sister-in-law, Gladys McKenzie and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Funeral Services will be held at W. J. Jones & Son Funeral Chapel Friday, September 28, 2001 at 11:00 am. Reverend Peter J. Calhoun will officiate. Interment will follow at Rosedale Cemetery. Flowers are gratefully declined. Memorials to the Lupus Society of Saskatchewan, Box 88, Royal University Hospital, 103 Hospital Drive, Saskatoon, S7N 0W8, would be appreciated. ANN DEMYEN
ANN LOUISE DEMYEN (CAREY), age 44 years of Moose Jaw, passed away on Sunday, April 8th, 2001 after a courageous 4 year battle against cancer. Born in Moose Jaw in 1957, Ann received her education at Coderre, Moose Jaw and Saskatoon. Ann has been employed with Raider Industries in Drinkwater and here in Moose Jaw. Predeceased by her father, Frank Carey, grandparents, Melvina and Frank Arthur Dyck and Dorris and Frank Carey. Ann is survived by special friend, Darrel Davidson, children: Michael, Michelle and Amanda, her mother Lucille Carey, her brothers: Allan (Kim) Carey and their children, Lori, Jason and Jason D.; John (Heather) Carey and children: Shannon, Cody and Chyenne and many aunts, uncles and cousins. The Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, April 12th, 2001 at 1:30 p.m. in the W. J. Jones & Son Funeral Chapel, 106 Athabasca St. E., Moose Jaw. Susan Butler-Jones will officiate. WILFRED PAYNE
MR. WILFRED J. PAYNE, age 82 years of Central Butte, Saskatchewan, passed away on Monday, February 11, 2002. Wilfred was born in Chaplin and grew up on the family farm. He received his education at Uren, Saskatchewan. In 1941 Wilfred joined the Army and went overseas, returning to Central Butte in 1945. In 1947 he started his own Tinsmith business which he ran until present. Wilfred was a member of the Legion Coronation Branch #213 and the Central Butte Fire Department for 55 years, 23 years of which he was Fire Chief. He was a Masonic Lodge and Shrine Club member as well as a member of the Central Butte and District Agricultural Society Fair Board. Wilfred served two terms on Town Council in Central Butte as well as two terms as Mayor. Predeceased by his parents, his brothers, Clifford, Jerry and Walter (and his wife, Joanne), one sister, Esther (and her husband, Lewis Rohfrietsch), brothers and sisters-in-law, Wesley and Bobbi Mulholland, Earl Cassels, Roy Kaufmann, Ted Nowack, Johnnie Currie, Willie Morden, Glen Eckert and Marie Payne. Wilfred is survived by his wife, Jessie, son, Ken, daughter, Ellen (Jim) Laybourne, brothers, Lewis (Rita), Scotty, and Bill (Lyla), sisters, Leona (Paul), Irene, Laurel, and Josephine, grandchildren, Nicole Laybourne, Kathleen (Doug) Gessner, great-granddaughter, Shawna, sisters-in-law, Betty Payne, Annie Currie and Jane Morden as well as numerous nieces and nephews. In keeping with Wilfred’s request, a private family service will be held. In lieu of flowers, memorials to the Shriners Hospital for Children or to the Central Butte Fire Department would be appreciated by the family. EDITH WARD
EDITH ELLEN (CONWAY) WARD of Moose Jaw, passed away peacefully with her family by her side on April 9, 2001 at the age of 93 years at Providence Place. Mom was born on May 29, 1907 in Deloraine, Man. She attended school at Holyrood, after finishing school mom worked as a nanny until marrying Harry Ward in 1928. Together they farmed south west of Mortlach until retiring to Mortlach. Mom eventually moved to High Park Towers in Moose Jaw where she made many new friends, until her health failed and she moved into Providence Place. Mom enjoyed knitting, tatting, gardening, cards, jigsaw puzzles and found great pleasure in entertaining friends and family and always had room at her table for an extra plate. She was called Aunt Edith by many. Predeceased by her husband, Harry Ward, son-in-law, Steve Ellard, grandson-in-law, Barry Hallborg, all her brothers and sisters. Edith was the last of her generation. She is survived by two sons: David (Sylvia) Ward, Ken (Mary) Ward, three daughters: Frances (Tom) Taylor, Margaret (Lloyd) Smith and Bettie (Dennis) Goodnough; forty-six grandchildren and forty-eight great-grandchildren, as well as many special nieces and nephews. The Funeral Service will be held at W. J. Jones & Son Funeral Chapel, 106 Athabacsa St. E., Moose Jaw on Saturday, April 14, 2001 at 1:30 p.m. Interment will follow at Sunset Cemetery. Visitation for family and friends will be held Friday evening (April 13 between 7-9 p.m.) at the W. J. Jones & Son Funeral Home. BENJAMIN KENT
Mr. Benjamin Samuel Kent, age 92, of Riverhurst, Saskatchewan passed away peacefully at home on November 2, 2001. Ben was born at Parry Sound, Ontario. He spent most of his life farming at Riverhurst and held an interest in farming right up to his passing. Predeceased by his parents; wife, Helen; two daughters: Margaret (George) Dyck; and Betty (Charles) MacKeen; two sisters and three brothers. Ben is survived by his brother, Ernie of Riverhurst; as well as several cousins, nieces, nephews, and grandchildren. In keeping with Ben’s wishes, a Graveside Service will be held at the Riverhurst Cemetery on Tuesday, November 6, 2001 at 1:30 pm. Reverend Helen Reid will officiate. Visitation for family and friends will be held Tuesday morning 10 – 11a.m. at the Prairie Memorial Funeral Home, Chaplin. In living memory of Ben, a tree will be planted in Wakamow Valley by Prairie Memorial Funeral Home.
VERNA SUTHERLAND
VERNA ISABELLE SUTHERLAND passed away Monday, August 19, 2002 at the Regina General Hospital. Verna was born February 7, 1917 at the Newberry homestead south of Moose Jaw. Her family moved to Moose Jaw in 1919 where she received her education at Victoria and A.E.Peacock Schools. She worked as a pastry baker at the Uptown Café for years. Verna then worked at the Eaton’s department store as manager of ladies wear. She met and married John Sutherland in 1949. Together they enjoyed traveling and she was always the perfect hostess to guests and family. Verna also helped John at Thunderbird Cleaners until his passing in 1968. She moved to Regina in 1972 and worked in retail until retiring in 1976. Due to poor health the last few years, Verna was unable to get out as much yet still loved and looked forward to her visits at home. Verna was predeceased by her parents, Val and Jean Loutzenhiser, her husband, John, brother, Laurence Newberry and infant sister, Jeannie. She leaves to mourn her passing, brother, Ken Newberry and sister, Olive Fewson of Moose Jaw as well as many nieces and nephews. In keeping with Verna’s request, a private family funeral service will be held. Donations in lieu of flowers may be directed to the Foundation for Moose Jaw Union Hospital, 455 Fairford St. E., Moose Jaw, Sask., S6H 1H3. DONNA DEMERSE
MRS. DONNA DEMERSE of Truax, Saskatchewan, passed away on Wednesday, September 19, 2001 at the age of 66 years. Born in the Kipling district of Saskatchewan December 29, 1934, at nine years of age, Donna moved with her family to Reston, Manitoba where she attended school. She worked in Regina for a number of years for the Saskatchewan Government Highway Department. Donna married Gilbert Demerse November 7, 1955 and they continued to farm in the Truax district. Predeceased by her parents, one sister, Grace Sewell and a brother, James Yates. Donna is survived by her husband, Gilbert of Truax, one daughter, Vicki (Greg) Argue of Regina, one granddaughter, Jacklyn; two sons: Peter and Brad – both of Truax, one sister, Joann Yates of Weyburn, one brother, Keith Yates of Cochrane, Alberta and her aunt, Vera Robinson of Regina as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. A Celebration of Donna’s Life will be held on Monday, September 24, 2001 at 1:30 p.m. at the W. J. Jones & Son Funeral Chapel, 106 Athabasca St. E., Moose Jaw. Bishop Tom Collings will officiate. Cremation will follow and private family memorialization will take place at the Truax Cemetery. Reception to follow service at the Truax Community Hall.
