CECIL WILLIS
CECIL THOMAS WILLIS passed away peacefully on Friday, February 9th, 2001 at Providence Place in Moose Jaw, aged 87 years. Predeceased by his parents Thomas and Agnes, brothers and sisters Les, Lynn (Copeland), Roy and William. Cecil is survived by the children of his brother Roy, Kathy and Peter, to whom Cecil seemed a second father; and other nieces and nephews. Cecil was born on November 19th, 1913. As a young boy he spent much time at the homestead and farm of his uncle, Josh Annable, where he acquired his love of horses and the western life. With his brother Les, Cecil was part of the Willis Brothers trick-riding and trick-roping act, touring on the rodeo circuit and performing at the Calgary Stampede in the late 1940’s. Cecil’s specialty was trick roping, spinning multiple loops while standing on his head on horseback or jumping the Texas skip on his saddle. In later years Cecil’s casual grace with a rope and lariat amazed and delighted us, a testament to endless hours of practice. Cecil started ranching in the hills southwest of Moose Jaw in the early 1950’s, working closely with his brother Roy. He helped to care for his mother Agnes who lived with him until her death in 1966. In 1973 Cecil retired to Moose Jaw, where he pursued his interests in photography and amassed a vast antique camera collection. He enjoyed going on trips with Roy and his family and participated in numerous wagon trains. In 1997 Cecil moved to Providence Place where the excellent care he received from the staff is deeply appreciated by the Willis family. At Cecil’s request a private ceremony will be held to inter his ashes in his parent’s plot at Rosedale Cemetery. Those wishing to make donations can direct them to Providence Place, 100-2nd Ave. N.E., Moose Jaw, S6H 1B8.
