MR. ARIE Van DORLAND of Moose Jaw, passed away suddenly at his home on Saturday, July 21st, 2001. Predeceased by his wife, Henny, his parents, one brother and one sister. Arie was born on March 6th, 1928 in Ommen, Holland. He married Henny on April 9th, 1952 and together they immigrated to Canada making their home in Moose Jaw. Arie was a man of few words but a kind heart and will be greatly missed and lovingly remembered by his family: daughters, Gerda (Brian) Cobbledick of Regina and Linda (Garry) Gallot of Cremona, Alta.; sons, Henry (Annette) of Lethbridge, Alta, John of Regina, Rob of Moose Jaw and grandchildren, Christa, Brad, Meagan, Kellen, Rene and Johnathon. Arie is also survived by family residing in Holland. The Funeral Service will be held at the W. J. Jones & Son Funeral Chapel, 106 Athabasca St. E., Moose Jaw on Friday, July 27th, 2001 at 1:30 p.m. Reverend Peter J. Calhoun will officiate. Cremation will follow and memorialization will take place at the family plot, Sunset Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be directed to the charity of one’s choice. In living memory of Arie, a tree will be planted in Wakamow Valley by W. J. Jones & Son Funeral Home.
MARY HOLKESTAD
On October 19, 2002, Mary (Fisher) Holkestad passed away at the Regina General Hospital with her family and friends by her side. Mary was born and raised in the Scout Lake district, later residing in the Ardill area with her husband, Ed, where they farmed and owned the hotel. Mary moved to Moose Jaw in 1989 and lived at Rotary Villa. She is predeceased by her husband, Ed; and daughters, Karen and Marion. The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to family and friends who helped Mary over the years and made it possible for her to continue to live independently. A Private Family Service was held on October 22, 2002 at W. J. Jones & Son Funeral Home. Reverend Doug Shepherd officiated. Memorials to the Sask. JOHN (JACK) THOMPSON
John (Jack) Samuel Thompson, long-time resident of Ormiston, Saskatchewan, passed away early May 27, 2002 at Moose Jaw. Survived by his wife May, daughter Janice (Kim) Anderson and granddaughters Gillian and Keira, Jack was predeceased by his parents, Samuel and Mary Ann Thompson, and by his daughter Carla. Born July 31, 1918 in Winnipeg, Jack grew up and attended school in East Kildonan. He early exhibited a strong work ethic, delivering newspapers as a boy, and when he turned 16, founding and operating a fuel delivery service. After graduating from high school, Jack studied engineering at the University of Manitoba, while still operating his business. War intervened. Jack joined the Royal Canadian Air Force, serving first as a flight engineer, then in aircraft maintenance. He was posted in England with 44 (Rhodesia) Squadron and then with 420(RCAF) Squadron, thereafter returning to Canada to serve in the British Commonwealth Air Training Program. Jack met and on September 30. 1944, married May Florence Lingard of Brandon. After his discharge from the RCAF, Jack and May moved to Winnipeg where he finished his Mechanical Engineering degree, while working a local dairy. In 1947, Jack accepted the position of mine manager at Ormiston Mining and Smelting, and he and May moved to the mine site, near Ormiston, Saskatchewan. There, Jack and May raised their two daughters, Janice and Carla, stressing the importance of family, the value of education, and the benefit and support offered by rural and community life. After 49 years at Ormiston, Jack and May moved to Moose Jaw. There, Jack constructed a pilot plant which demonstrated the feasibility of converting pulp ash into sodium bicarbonate. Jack served his community well, on the local school, church and recreation boards. He was a director of the Saskatchewan Liberal Association and the Regina Flying Club. Jack served on the board of Ports Canada Corporation, and was instrumental in the foundation of the Saskatchewan Industrial Gas and Power Users Association. Jack had four loves: his family, his church and homilies, work, and flying. All continued to play an important role until his death. The Funeral Mass will be Celebrated on Saturday, June 1, 2002 at 10:30 a.m. at Church of Our Lady, 566 Vaughan Street, Moose Jaw. Private family burial will take place. Memorials for the Waterston House, 1865 Osler Street, Regina, Sask., S4P 1W1 would be appreciated. In living memory of Jack, a tree will be planted in Wakamow Valley by W. J. HELENA (SHORTY) BUTLER
Helena Alda (Shortie) Butler of Pioneer Village, and formerly of Monk Ave., passed away peacefully in hospital August 23, 2002 at the age of 85 years. Born in Moose Jaw, September 16, 1916, Mrs. Butler has been a Moose Jaw resident all her life. She attended King George Elementary School, Central Collegiate High School, and graduated from the Providence Hospital School of Nursing (1941). She married her loving husband Arthur and after raising her family, she continued her nursing career until retirement, September 1981. She is predeceased by her husband, Arthur; father and mother, William and Alda Stephenson; sisters, Gladys McGrath and Helen Cameron. She is survived by son, David (Arlene) of Brampton, granddaughter Michelle (Walter), great-grandchild, Emily; granddaughter, Susan (Phillip), great-grandchildren, Alex and Madeline; daughter, Louise (Frank) Gyrlevich of Moose Jaw, granddaughter, Robyn (Darwin), great-grandchildren, Kyle, Ryan, and Madison, granddaughter, Kristin, great-grandchild Jordan; son, John (Christine) of Saskatoon, and grandchildren, Jessica, Michael, and Katelyn. Mrs. Butler is also survived by nieces, Marilyn Knarr, Noella Busse, Noella Cummings, Holly Reiter; nephews, Doug and Bill Cameron, and Bob and Doug Davis. Mrs. Butler was devoted to family and friends and the caring for others. Her love for nursing, particularly her many years in maternity, and her unending kindness will not be forgotten by all who were touched by her. Funeral Services will be held at W. J. Jones & Son Chapel on Tuesday, August 27, 2002 at 3:30 pm. Reverend Betty Bradley will officiate. Interment will follow at Rosedale Cemetery. FRANK BLANCHARD
FRANKLIN (FRANK) VICTOR BLANCHARD, passed away on Sunday, October 21, 2001, at the Moose Jaw Union Hospital, with his family by his side. Born November 27, 1932 in Moose Jaw, he farmed and ranched in the Mayberry district most of his life. Frank was predeceased by his father, Arthur in 1945, by his mother, Alice and brother, Jim in 1983 and great-niece, Leanne in 1981. He will be sadly missed and forever remembered by his sister, Edna (Earl) Boan, brothers: George (Nan) Blanchard and Gerald (Terry) Blanchard; special nieces : Eunice (Don) Purington, Barb (Al) Pilsner, Pauline (Ray) Lavallee, Darlene Blanchard, Brenda Boan (Gary), Lawana (Laurie) Adie and Bonnie Kirk; special nephews: Garry (Veronica) Blanchard, Russel (Myrna) Blanchard, David (Dianna) Blanchard, Dale Boan (Annette), Terry Boan (Sue), Fred (Rose) Kozar and numerous great and great-great-nieces and nephews. The family were very special to Frank and he always enjoyed family gatherings. Funeral Services will be held at the W. J. Jones & Son Funeral Chapel, 106 Athabasca St. E., Moose Jaw on Thursday, October 25, 2001 at 3:30 p.m. Della Ferguson will officiate. Interment will follow at Rosedale Cemetery. MRS. LAURA WINNIFRED MACDONALD (nee Jones), passed away peacefully in Moose Jaw on Tuesday, October 23, 2001. Laura was born in Toronto in 1927 and had lived in Moose Jaw since 1952. She was a longtime employee of LJ Agency in Moose Jaw. Predeceased by her parents and her husband, Allen. Laura is survived by her son, Bob ( Alma ) and two grandchildren, Danielle and Suzanne. The Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, October 27, 2001 at 11:30 a.m. in the W. J. Jones & Son Funeral Chapel, 106 Athabasca St. E., Moose Jaw. Reverend Betty Bradley will officiate. MR. JOHN CHARLES STEINKEY
MR. JOHN CHARLES STEINKEY of Moose Jaw passed away on Tuesday, December 3, 2002 in the Moose Jaw Union Hospital at the age of 85 years. He was born December 16, 1916 and received his education in Fox Valley, Saskatchewan. As a young man, John moved to Maple Creek where he worked until 1945, moving that same year to make his home in Moose Jaw, where he worked for the Saskatchewan Wheat Pool until his retirement in 1982. John married Agatha Mary Dirk (Davies) in 1955. Predeceased by parents, his wife, Mary and brother, Jack. John is survived by his son, Bob (Terry) of Grande Prairie, Alberta; step family: Betty (Reg) Parker of Moose Jaw and Bill (Marilyn) Davies of Airdrie, Alberta. The Funeral Service will be held on Friday, December 6, 2002 at 10:00 a.m. at Church of Our Lady, 566 Vaughan St., Moose Jaw. Stephanie Molloy will officiate.
