Sheila Heselton
MRS. SHEILA KATHERINE HESELTON, RN, age 89 of Moose Jaw, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, July 18, 2001 with family at her side. Sheila was the fourth child of William Edwards Waters and his wife Elizabeth (Thomas). She was born above her father’s bakery at 1 Palm Hill/32 Christchurch Lane, Birkenhead, Wirral, England on February 26, 1912. As a child she loved playmaking and was the apple of her father’s eye. Sheila left school at age fourteen and went to work as a dress-maker’s apprentice making five shillings a week. The letters from her sisters in Canada convinced Sheila to emigrate. While waiting for permission to emigrate Sheila worked as a governess for a Welsh family. Finally, in 1933, her papers came and she spent her 21st birthday onboard the “ Adriatic ”. The trip was wonderful and she treasured a coffee spoon she won on board at a whist tournament. In Montreal she boarded “The Dominion” for Calgary. It had plush green seats and a stove at one end to boil water. In 1933 both Barbara and Sheila decided to move to Prince Albert, Saskatchewan. Sheila was accepted into training at the Victoria Hospital there. She was a student nurse and loved it all. Sheila told many stories about sneaking into the hospital after hours. In 1937 she met Norman Heselton and was married in May 1938. They lived for a short time in Bassano (where Lynette was born), and then moved back to Prince Albert. In 1945 the family moved to Moose Jaw. Sheila has been a member of St. George’s Anglican Church for over fifty years and was for many years an active member of the WA. She was also a member of the Parents Auxiliary to the Moose Jaw #1 Cub pack – which incidentally was the first group in Canada to be officially allowed to wear long pants. In 1954, Sheila returned to nursing at the Providence Hospital where she worked for twenty-two years. Most of that time was as head nurse on the Surgical Ward. Sheila was active in the Saskatchewan Registered Nurse’s Association for many years. In 1988 the family had a large gathering for their 50th wedding anniversary. Sadly her beloved Norman died in 1990. Sheila lived alone at 345 Ross Street until 1997 when after her third hip replacement, she moved in with son Bill and his wife Ann. Sheila is predeceased by her parents: William and Elizabeth Waters; her husband: Norman Heselton; her brother: William Waters; sisters: Aileen Maertens-Poole, Barbara Waters and Monica Waters; her son-in-law Bob James and her grandson Clint Bauck. Sheila is survived by her four children: Lynette James and her son Chris James; sons: Allan (Georgina) Heselton and their sons Brian (Payne) Heselton and Sgt. Kevin Heselton; John (Lil) Heselton and their children Shauna Heselton and Rob (Anne) Heselton; Bill (Ann) Heselton and their children: Cindy Heselton; Julie Bauck; Jacquie (Rob) Seibel; David (Alma) van der Raadt; Geof (Dawnalee) Heselton; Tammi (Jason) Hein; and Debbie (Carmen) Curtis. Sheila is also survived by fourteen great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. The Funeral Service will be held on Monday, July 23, 2001 at 1:30 p.m. at the W. J. Jones & Son Funeral Chapel, 106 Athabasca St. E., Moose Jaw. Reverend Betty Bradley will officiate. Memorialization will take place at Prairie Memorial Columbarium at a later time.
