JOYCE HUGHES
(March 26, 1931 – November 3, 2001)

Joyce passed away peacefully at home on November 3, 2001 with her family at her side. She was born in Moose Jaw to Gus and Kari Adrian of Secretan on March 26, 1931. On October 27, 1951, she married Dave Hughes of Chaplin and they took up residence on the farm south of Chaplin. Joyce is survived by her husband of fifty years, Dave Hughes of Chaplin, her mother, Kari Adrian of Chaplin; three daughters: Cheryl Baptist (Wayne), granddaughter Jennifer all of Calgary; Brenda Belyea (Russell), grandsons: David of Regina and Warner of Saskatoon; Gayla Gane (Edward), grandsons: Stephen Hughes (Daina) and Greg Gane of Chaplin and great-granddaughter, September of Moose Jaw, sister, Aileen Bauck (Henry) of Chaplin; sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law: Ben and Lena Hughes, Gladys and Wayne Pierce, Marlene Hughes and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Joyce was predeceased by her father, Gus Adrian in 1971 and her brother, Ken in 1999. Joyce was a kind and gentle person who loved the time spent with family and friends. All animals, especially dogs, cows and horses held a special place in her heart. Some of her other interests included camping, crocheting and knitting, crossword and jigsaw puzzles, square-dancing and participation in sports. No services by request. Memorialization will take place privately at a later date. Donations in Joyce’s memory may be forwarded to the Saskatchewan Lung Association, 1231 – 8th St. E., Saskatoon, Sask., S7H 0S5 or to the Canadian Cancer Society, 223 Fairford St. E., Moose Jaw, Sask., S6H 0E1. In living memory of Joyce, a tree will be planted in Wakamow Valley by W. J. Jones & Son Funeral Home.

MICHAEL BARABASH

Michael Barabash of Moose Jaw passed away April 19, 2002 at age 89. Mike was predeceased by his beloved wife Ann in 1994. He is lovingly remembered by his daughter, Gail, son-in-law Vern Noble of Moose Jaw, grandson Greg (Shelley), great-granddaughter Nataysia and granddaughter Lisa (Jason) Hennessey all of Vancouver as well as several other relatives. Born in the Canora district, Mike moved to Moose Jaw as a young man. He obtained his Journeyman Mechanics and Welding at A.E. Peacock and was instrumental in creating the “Man of Industry” and “Churchill” statues of which he was always very proud. Mike owned and operated “Mike’s Auto Service & Truck Transport and White Rose Service Station”. Mike didn’t retire until age 82. He was well known for his integrity in business and was a friend to all who knew him. Mike was a Mason and he and Ann belonged to round and square dance clubs for many years. Friends are invited to share in a celebration of Mike’s life on Friday, May 3, at 4:00 p.m. at Salvation Army Church, #2 Wintergreen Drive with Della Ferguson officiating. Flowers are gratefully declined, memorials to Mike’s favorite charity, the Moose Jaw Humane Society, Box 1658, Moose Jaw, S6H 7K7, would be appreciated by the family.

CLARA MUNN

Clara C. Munn (nee Hill), passed away quietly with her family by her side on November 7, 2002 at the age of 84 years. Clara was born in Locklair, Scotland on November 26, 1917. She and her family came to Canada in 1926 to the Briercrest District. Clara met Earl Munn in 1937 and they were married in 1940, celebrating 62 years together. Clara and Earl were long time residents of the Blue Hill district where the raised one daughter, Betty. Clara is survived by her husband, Earl; daughter, Betty (Roy) Gulash; and grandchildren: Rodger (Tara) Gulash – Spruce Grove, Alta.; Rhonda Gulash and her son, Matthew – Moose Jaw; and Garry (Cheryl) Gulash and their children: Michael, Shelby and Gavin – Davenport, Iowa. In keeping with Clara’s wishes, a private family service will be held at a later date. Following Cremation, memorialization will take place at the Blue Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials to the Alzheimer Association, #301–2550 12th Ave., Regina, S4P 3X1, would be appreciated. In living memory of Clara, a tree will be planted in Wakamow Valley by W. J. Jones & Son Funeral Home.

Stan Root

HUGH STANLEY ROOT, passed away at the age of 94 years in the Moose Jaw Union Hospital after a short illness. Predeceased by his wife Doris, sisters Ethel and Alice and his brother Bill. Stan is survived by sisters Marian of White Rock, B.C. and Bernice of Salmon Arm, B.C., brothers Ivan of Winnipeg, Man. and Larry of Invermere, B.C. as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Stan was born in Emerson, Manitoba in 1906. He moved to the Killdeer, Saskatchewan area with his parents and siblings in 1914. He worked on the farm and in the 1930’s bought grain in both Killdeer and Wood Mountain. He then worked as a postal employee in Moose Jaw from 1940 until he retired in 1971. Stan made many friends in Moose Jaw while delivering mail. He was an ardent bowler and won many trophies. A Memorial Service to Celebrate Stan’s Life will be held at the W. J. Jones & Son Funeral Chapel, 106 Athabasca St. E., Moose Jaw at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, July 24, 2001. Reverend Cory Steinson will officiate. Donations in memory of Stan may be made to the charity of your choice. In living memory of Stan, a tree will be planted in Wakamow Valley Parkland by W. J. Jones & Son Funeral Home.

DOUGLAS ENGLISH

DOUGLAS MURRAY ENGLISH of Moose Jaw and formerly of Hearne/Avonlea, passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, March 25th, 2001. Doug is predeceased by his parents, Clara and Okel English of Hearne, Saskatchewan. He is survived by his wife, Catharine, son, Doug (Angie) and their boys, Chris and Chad - all of Regina, daughter, Pat (Julian) Chinski and their boys, Jarrod, Shane and Brent - all of Weyburn, and daughter, Laurie (Guy) Renaud and their children, Sara and Johnny - all of Moose Jaw, a brother, Bob (May) of Moose Jaw and a sister, Ione (Tony) Wagner of Maple Ridge, B.C. Doug was born January 7, 1931 at Rouleau, Saskatchewan. He was raised in the Hearne district, later farming in the area. Doug and Cathy lived in Avonlea for many years and moved into Moose Jaw in 1975. Besides farming, Doug worked for many years for Digicon Oil out of Calgary and Houston. His work took him to many places in Canada and abroad, always returning with souvenirs for the kids and lots of pictures and stories for friends and family. He was a quiet, kind and honest man, going out of his way to help in whatever way he could. Respecting Doug’s wishes, there will be no funeral, friends and family will gather for a graveside service at the Sunset Cemetery on Wednesday, March 28th, 2001 at 1:30p.m. Those wishing to attend may meet at the Sunset Cemetery entrance at 1:25p.m. Following the cemetery service, family and friends will gather at the Eagles Club Hall for a time of fellowship and further reflection. Flowers are most gratefully declined. If friends so desire, donations can be made to the Moose Jaw Humane Society, 1755 Stadacona St. W., Moose Jaw, Sask., S6H 7K7 or to the charity of your choice.

PAULINE PENN

Pauline was born June 17, 1950 in Yorkton, Saskatchewan and passed away suddenly Wednesday, January 30, 2002. Pauline lived her life to its fullest. She loved sharing time with her family, especially her children and grandchildren. Her house was always open for family celebrations. Christmas was a favorite time of year. Pauline loved to travel. Her journeys took her to England, U.S. (Mickey’s House) and various places in Canada. She also loved basking in the sun at Buffalo Pound Lake. Pauline was a tireless worker for the Moose Jaw Transition House. Her hobbies included gardening, camping and tracing her family roots. Pauline was a Justice of the Peace and was so proud of her work with Emergency Intervention Orders. Left to cherish her memory: Ann Vander Hooft; her children, Derek Nelson; Kyla (Derek) Kletzel, Mandy (Kenton) Perry, her grandchildren, Kianna, Dayan and Jeron. Her mother, Louise (Dave) Martin; brothers, George (Debbie) Penn, Garth Penn and families as well as many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews. In keeping with Pauline’s wishes, the family will have their own memorialization. Family and friends are invited to the Eagles Club, 561 Home St. for a time of celebration in honor of Pauline’s life on Sunday, February 3, 2002 from 1-3 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Moose Jaw Transition House would be appreciated. In living memory of Pauline, a tree will be planted in Wakamow Valley by W. J. Jones & Son Funeral Home.
