LORINE HELEN DOBRESCU of Victoria Towers, Moose Jaw, passed away on Tuesday, August 6, 2002 after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Born April 16, 1931 in Wapella, Saskatchewan, she moved to Moose Jaw in 1944 where she later met and married Benjamin Dobrescu. Her garden was a great pleasure and her special friendship with her sister-in-law, Yvonne meant a great deal to her. Predeceased by her husband, Benjamin and her parents, Ethel and John Gemmell, Lorine leaves to mourn her passing: son, Randy (Shirley) of Regina, Sk.; daughters: Jane (Lou) Gubbe of Battleford, Sk., Julie McLaren of Moose Jaw, Sk., seven grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, her brother, Lorne (Ila) Gemmell of Morden, Manitoba as well as aunts, cousins and numerous nieces and nephews. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, August 10, 2002 at 11:00 a.m. in the W. J. Jones & Son Funeral Chapel, 106 Athabasca St. E., Moose Jaw. Reverend Peter J. Calhoun will officiate. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, 223 Fairford St. E., Moose Jaw, Sask., S6H 0E1. In living memory of Lorine, a tree will be planted in Wakamow Valley by W. J. JEAN M. GIBSON
Mrs. Jean Margaret Gibson of Moose Jaw passed away on Monday April 1, 2002 at the age of 68 years. Jean was born on February 28, 1934. Predeceased by her parents Carl and Oxana Noren. Jean is survived by her family : husband; Dick and their children, sons: Brent and Douglas Gibson; daughters : Cathy (Bill) Reaume and Sandra Gibson. Her brothers David and Gordon Noren, ten grandchildren and three great grandchildren as well as many nieces and nephews. In keeping with the families wishes there will be no funeral service. Memorialization will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers Memorials may be made to the Pioneers Lodge 1000 Albert St. Moose Jaw S6H 2Y1. KEN LEE
Kenneth Lee of Moose Jaw, passed away at the Moose Jaw Union Hospital on Saturday, August 17, 2002 at the age of 76 years. Ken was born at Avonlea on December 29, 1925. He attended Sunshine School near Avonlea and then high school in Avonlea and at the Moose Jaw Normal School. Ken received his bachelor of Education at the University of Regina and eventually received his Meritorious Service Award for 34 years of teaching. He married Joyce Ripley on August 16, 1952. In his younger years Ken enjoyed curling, softball, and fastball. He became an umpire and taught many clinics, receiving Outstanding Service Awards in 1978 and 1997. He was inducted into the Canadian Umpires Hall of Fame and the Sask. Hall of Fame in 1999. Ken also enjoyed Square/Round Dancing and called for a number of clubs in Moose Jaw and area for many years and also taught dancing in many communities in Southern Sask. Ken and Joyce received the first Lily Award recognizing their contribution to the Square/Round Dance Association. Ken called square dances all winter and umpired all summer. He was also involved with the Sukanen Ship Museum, the Scottish Society, Multicultural Society, Sprigs O’Heather Girls Pipe Band, and the Heather Highlanders Pipe Band. Ken was instrumental in establishing the mural of the Sprigs O’Heather and Heather Highlanders Pipe Band. Ken and Joyce loved to travel – first he worked hard with fund-raising to help the Sprigs O’Heather to tour Britain in 1974. Later he and Joyce traveled to Ireland, England, and France, and spent winters in California and Mexico. Ken also loved to garden and enjoyed sharing his produce with family and neighbors. He was a founding member of the Moose Jaw Wild Animal Park Conservation Society. He is predeceased by his parents, Richard Allen and Ruth Lee; brothers: Aisel, Everett, and Fred; and sisters: Velda and Etta. He is survived by is wife of 50 years, Joyce; children: Linda (Barry) McMurdo and their sons, Steven and John – Weyburn; Glen (Maureen) Lee – Regina; Sharon (Clark) Hertz and son, David – Saskatoon; Wendy (Michael) Schumacher and daughters: Hilary and Emily – Cincinnati, Ohio; brothers: Lloyd; Ross (Aletha); and sisters: Elsie (Bill) Flynn; and Edna (Allan) Bell. Funeral Services will be held at St. Andrew’s United Church, 60 Athabasca Street East, on Tuesday, August 20, 2002 at 1:30 pm. Reverend Peter J. Calhoun will officiate. Interment will follow at Rosedale Cemetery. Visitation Monday evening 7 – 9 pm at W. J. Jones & Son Funeral Home. Memorials to the Restoration of the Sprigs O’Heather Mural, c/o Murals of Moose Jaw, Box 1982, S6H 7N7; or the Canadian Cancer Society, 223 Fairford Street E., S6H 0E1, would be appreciated. WESLEY McWILLIAMS
MR. WESLEY McWILLIAMS, age 52 years of Moose Jaw, passed away Tuesday, July 30, 2002. Born in Moose Jaw, Wesley spent most of his adult life employed at Diversified Services. Wesley loved music - Elvis Presley being his favorite artist. He also had a love for pets. Wesley led a near normal life, thanks to the support of his loving parents and many kind people in the Moose Jaw area. Predeceased by his parents, Wes and Delia, brothers: Norman and John and a sister, Darlene. Wesley is survived by his brothers: George of Regina, Al (Fran) of Calgary and Vaughn of Stettler, AB as well as many nieces and nephews. A Memorial Service may be held and announced at a later date. The family would like to thank the staff at Diversified Services and Extendicare for their kindness and consideration to Wesley and a very special thank you to Linda Odowichuk. HILDA MAY (GAMMAGE) GIBBS of Providence Place, Moose Jaw and formerly of the Blue Hill/Briercrest districts, died on Thursday, October 25, 2001, an Alzheimer victim. May was predeceased by her parents, William and Hilda Gammage; sisters: Verna Gammage and Mil Haakonson; sister-in-law, Ruth Gammage; sons-in-law: Wilfred Runzer and Ken Sempel; nephew, Roy Haakonson; niece, Annabelle Haakonson and special brother-in-law, Joe Jasper. May is survived by her husband, Jim; daughters: Linda Sempel, Karen Runzer and Grace Gibbs; son, Bill Gibbs; grandchildren: Kristin & Doug Brooke and Robert Runzer; brother, Bob Gammage; sisters: Marg (Gordon) English and Doreen (Ellis) Jamieson; brothers-in-law, Mel Haakonson; special sister-in-law, Edna Jasper and her children: John (Lori) Jasper and Helen (Dale) Whitfield and Edna’s grandchildren: Tyson Jasper, Nancy Whitfield and Michael Whitfield, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews and many friends. May was born on September 11, 1917, on the Saskatchewan family farm near Compeer, Alberta. She took her education at Hilldale, Compeer and Burnbrae Schools. Later she attended a Dominion Training Program where she specialized in sewing. In 1943-1944, May attended Moose Jaw Normal School. She taught at Leamington, Glenside and in the Kerrobert area. May and Jim were married on December 29, 1946 at Kerrobert United Church and made their home on the Gibbs family farm in the Blue Hill district. May was a very active community member. She was a member and advocate of Blue Hill United Church, a life member of the United Church Women, a Sunday School teacher and a 4-H Homecraft leader. She was an avid gardener, seamstress, quilter and knitter. Harvest would never have been completed without her “direction”. May’s favorite pastime was spoiling her two grandchildren. Over the last several years, Alzheimer’s robbed May of her ability to perform life’s simplest tasks. This necessitated her move to Providence Place in September, 1999. The family is very grateful for the compassionate care that she received from Dr. Gass and the Sisters and staff of Providence Place. The Celebration of May’s Life will be held on Monday, October 29, 2001 at 2:00 p.m. at Briercrest United Church, Briercrest, Saskatchewan. Glenys Grosenick will officiate. Private burial of cremains will take place at Blue Hill Cemetery. Flowers are gratefully declined.
