Percy Vernon Hendrickson, long time Moose Jaw resident, passed away at the Moose Jaw Union Hospital on July 28, 2002 at the age of 96 years. Born on a farm near Creston, Illinois, he was the youngest son of the late Garfield and Sarah (Munson) Hendrickson. He immigrated with his family to the Briercrest district where they farmed until 1924. They then moved to the Moose Jaw district where he continued farming until 1940. After moving to Moose Jaw, Vernon was employed by Prairie Airways during the War and then with Canadian Pacific Railway until retiring in 1970. He was a member of the Brotherhood of Railway Carmen and the Moose Jaw Scottish Society. He is predeceased by his loving wife of 66 years, Elizabeth (Betty) Dunsmuir; a brother, Harold; sister, Irene, both of Moose Jaw; and two grandsons. He is survived by three daughters: Iris (Syd) Williams – Elliot Lake, Ont.; Evelyn (Rollie) Binner – Winnipeg, Man; Marlene (Ken) Spicer – Moose Jaw; two sons: Garfield (Yanet) – Dartmouth, N.S.; and Charles (Betty) – recently of Prince Edward County, Ont.; fifteen grandchildren; twenty-seven great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. Funeral Services will be held at W. J. Jones & Son Funeral Chapel on Wednesday, July 31, 2002 at 3:30 pm. Pastor John Duerksen will officiate. Interment will follow at Rosedale Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials to the Parkinson’s Disease Foundation, Box 102, 103 Hospital Drive, Saskatoon, S7N 0W8; or to Chateau St. Michael, 525 Seventh Ave. S.E., Moose Jaw, S6H 8B6, would be appreciated. NORMAN FENTY
NORMAN JOSEPH FENTY passed away on Friday, May 18th, 2001 at the Forest Grove Care Centre, Forest Lawn – Calgary, Alberta. Born September 13th, 1930, at Kelstern, Saskatchewan, son of the late James and Adella Fenty. Norman is predeceased by brothers: James Fenty of Vancouver, and John Fenty of Hanley, Saskatchewan and sister, Pearl Stewart of Central Butte, Saskatchewan. He is survived by sisters: Violet Knelsen of Moose Jaw, and Adella Sajiw of Vancouver and brother, Harold Fenty of Moose Jaw and a special friend of the family, Loraine Vass of Calgary. Norman will be cremated with burial of cremains at the family plot in Rosedale Cemetery, Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan. At Norman’s request, there will be no funeral services. Norman will be dearly missed by all. Memorials may be directed to the charity of donor’s choice. In living memory of Norman, a tree will be planted in Wakamow Valley by W. J. JEAN NEWBERRY
JEAN NEWBERRY (LAFFERTY), age 80 years of Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, passed away on Thursday, November 1, 2001 at the Moose Jaw Union Hospital. Mom was born on July 2, 1921 at Calderbank, Saskatchewan where she also received her schooling. During WWII, Mom remained to work the farm when her brothers went to war. She later moved to Moose Jaw where she met and married Ken Newberry on September 8, 1951. They had just recently celebrated their Golden Anniversary! Mom enjoyed her gardening and flowers and took pride in her yard. Although ill health prevented her from continuing gardening in later years, she ensured that it was still tended to. Mom was a loving and totally devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She derived great pleasure from her grandchildren, who were the apple of her eye. Although Mom faced challenges in her life, she met each one with unyielding determination and courage. This was never more evident than at the time of her passing. Predeceased by her parents, Joseph and Catherine; brothers: Joseph, Andrew, John and Robert, sister, Agnes; twin sons: Barry and Larry and nephew, Robbie. Mom is survived by her husband, Ken; sons: Wayne (Bobbie) of Goshen, IN.; Bob of Moose Jaw; daughters: Glenda (Steve) Hummel of Elkhart, IN., Cathy (Dennis) Rivest of London, ON., Val (Dwayne) Spratt of Moose Jaw, ten grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren. A private family graveside service will take place at the family plot, Rosedale Cemetery at a later date. MABEL COWARD
Mrs. Mabel Irene Coward age 94 of Moose Jaw, passed away suddenly on September 13, 2002. Born at Liberty, Sask., Mabel attended Normal School in Moose Jaw and taught school until she met and married Ralph Coward. She is predeceased by her husband, Ralph; son, Dennis and daughter, Gladys. She is survived by her daughter, Marjorie – Penticton; son, Bill – Weyburn; as well as eight grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. A Memorial Service will be held at Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, corner of Thatcher Drive and Mulberry Lane, on Wednesday, September 18, 2002 at 1:30 pm. Reg McKee will officiate. CHRISTOPHER NEWTON
On Friday, July 6, 2001, CHRISTOPHER GEORGE NEWTON of Central Butte passed away. Chris was born on December 2, 1926 at Central Butte, Saskatchewan. He was the sixth of eight children raised on a farm west of Central Butte. He married Helen Hood on December 28, 1961 and the couple settled four miles south of Gilroy on the Hood Homestead where they raised three children. He continued to farm actively and would complain about the lack of rain until the very end. Chris had varied interests which included hunting, fishing, gardening, lathe work, playing cards and reading about the World Wars. He loved to visit and reminisce. He was very active in the children’s lives. Chris was a cub leader, spent endless hours water and snow skiing and attended countless horse shows. Two of his most recent loves were his grandchildren, whom he enjoyed watching them swim in the pool and always made them giggle by clattering his false teeth. Chris leaves to mourn, Helen, his wife of thirty-nine years; children: David (Kathy), Greg and Janine ( Lynn ) and his precious grandchildren Nathan and Chris. Dad had many special friends: Tom, Bill, Bud, Gordon, Cliff, Iva and Joe, Ken and Linda, the Paysens and Bob Colby. Following cremation, A Graveside Service of Remembrance for family and friends will be held at the Riverhurst Cemetery on Tuesday, July 10, 2001 at 1:30 p.m. Wendy Gibson will officiate. Memorials to the Saskatoon Cancer Clinic at Royal University Hospital, 103 Hospital Drive, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, S7N 0W8 would be gratefully accepted in lieu of flowers. FORREST HALE
The passing of FORREST JAMES HALE age 78 year of Mossbank, Saskatchewan occurred on Saturday, August 25, 2001 at Dimond Lodge, Biggar, Saskatchewan. Surviving are his wife, Edith; children: Rose (Walter), Robert (Hazel) of Biggar, John (Gloria) of White Horse, Yukon, Joe (Pat) of Stoney Plains, Alberta, seven grandchildren and sisters, Eileen (Aron) of Rosthern, SK. and Myrtle (Leslie) Ford of Moose Jaw. Predeceased by his parents, Archie and Alice a sister, Ila Warren and infant sister, Rose. The Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday, September 4, 2001 at 1:30 p.m. in the W. J. Jones & Son Funeral Chapel, 106 Athabasca St. E., Moose Jaw. Mr. Larry Ager, one of Jehovah’s Witnesses will be the speaker. Burial will follow at Sunset Cemetery.
