HELENA NICHOLS

HELENA MAY NICHOLS (nee VAIL) passed away July 9, 2001 after a short stay at Moose Jaw Union Hospital. Born January 31, 1912, in Moose Jaw where she attended Victoria Public, Ross Collegiate, and Normal School. She married William David “Bill” Nichols in 1937. During the lonely war years she served in the Volunteer Auxiliary Driver’s Corps and worked in Turner and Ellis Hardware. Helena was an active member of St. Andrew’s United Church, the WCTU, WCU, the Hospital Auxiliary and the Exhibition Board and Community Centre. She was a literacy volunteer, working with children and newcomers. Active in founding and long time president of the Moose Jaw Unit of the Canadian Cancer Society, she was awarded a Governor General’s Commemorative Medal in 1992, “for significant contribution to compatriots, community and to Canada ”. Crafts, particularly tatting, were for her, a joy and a challenge. Helena was always striving to learn, perfect and teach needlework skills. She looked forward to the annual competitions and was proud of her many ribbons and those of her tatting students and friends. She was predeceased by her husband Bill (1985), and is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, William Nichols and Audrey Whitson, of Edmonton. The Funeral Service will be held on Friday, July 13, 2001 at 1:30 p.m. at St. Andrew’s United Church, 60 Athabasca St. E., Moose Jaw. Reverend Peter J. Calhoun will officiate. Interment will follow at Rosedale Cemetery. Visitation for family and friends will be held Thursday evening, 7-9 p.m. at the W. J. Jones & Son Funeral Home, 106 Athabasca St. E. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, 223 Fairford St. E., Moose Jaw, S6H 0E1. In living memory of Helena, a tree will be planted in Wakamow Valley Parkland by W. J. Jones & Son Funeral Home.

ROBERT "BOB" AKINS

ROBERT (BOB) AKINS, born July 29, 1912 at the home farm near Hearne, Saskatchewan, passed away on Wednesday, June 20, 2001 at Pioneer Lodge, Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan. He was the eldest son of Edward and Mary Akins. Bob married Isabella “Bella” Brough of Tugaske on December 23, 1942. Bob farmed the homestead and was Postmaster in Hearne. He was a SGI insurance agent for many years. He served as an RM Counselor of Redburn #130 for twenty-three years. Bob was very active in the Masons, Scottish Rite, Shriners and Eastern Star. When Bob and Bella retired to Moose Jaw in 1983, they took up bowling, golfing, traveling, along with their many lodge activities. Predeceased by his sister, Mary Barney, brothers: Clifford, Gordon and Edgar, sisters-in-law, May Patterson, Lois Akins, Anna Mae Akins and Betty Brough, brothers-in-law: Gordon Watson, Con Healey, Les McCutcheon, Elmer Patterson, Slim Ferrara and Bill Melton. Bob is survived by his wife of 58 years, Bella Akins, sons: Barry (Ethel) Akins of Outlook, Dennis (Judy) Akins of Saskatoon, Keith (Eleanor) Akins of Hearne, daughters: Donna (Jack) Fines of Biggar, Joyce (Dent) Fines of Moose Jaw; eleven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; sisters: Marg Ferrara of Moose Jaw, Alice Melton of Vancouver, Pat Healey of Vancouver, Iris Watson of Avonlea; brother, Cec (Peg) Akins of Harris, sisters-in-law: Melva Aikens of Avonlea, Ruth Akins of Moose Jaw, Mabel Akins of Vancouver, Peggy McCutcheon of Rocanville, brother-in-law, Don Barney of Moose Jaw. The Funeral Service will be held on Wednesday, June 27, 2001 at 2:00 p.m. at St. Andrew’s United Church, 60 Athabasca St. E., Moose Jaw. Reverend Des Patton will officiate. Memorialization will have taken place at the Hillcrest Cemetery, Avonlea. Donations in lieu of flowers to Shriners Children’s Hospital or to a charity of one’s choice. In living memory of Bob, a tree will be planted in Wakamow Valley by W. J. Jones & Son Funeral Home.

VICTOR RICHARDSON

In loving memory of Victor Theodore Richardson of Moose Jaw who passed away on Thursday, February 7, 2002 at the age of 86 years. Victor served in the British Army (Royal Engineers), serving throughout Europe, South Africa and Egypt, and as a Quarter Master for 35 years. He will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by his wife, Dorothy; four daughters: Eve (Keith), Margaret (Chuck), Valerie, and Barbara (Brian); and son-in-law, John Bennett. Victor is predeceased by the mother of his children, Luise Ahrens; his parents, Gertrude and John; brothers: Jack and Nelson; sisters: Grace, Gertrude, and Daphne; and daughter, Trudy Bennett. Victor is also survived by brothers: Tom (Madge) and Peter (Toni); and sisters: Rose and Lilly (Cyril); eleven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. The Funeral Service will be held at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, 15 Westpark Drive (corner of 9th Ave.N.W. and Thatcher Drive), Moose Jaw on Monday, February 11, 2002 at 1:30 pm. Bishop Andy Adami will officiate. Interment will follow at Rosedale Cemetery. Royal Canadian Legion Funeral Rites will be conducted at the Cemetery by Roscoe Steele of Moose Jaw Branch #59. Visitation Sunday evening 7 – 8:30 pm at W. J. Jones & Son Funeral Home. Memorials to the Moose Jaw Union Hospital Foundation, 455 Fairford St. E., Moose Jaw, S6H 1H3; or the Sask. Heart and Stroke Foundation, Box 521, Moose Jaw, S6H 4P2, would be appreciated. In living memory of Victor, a tree will be planted in Wakamow Valley by W. J. Jones & Son Funeral Home.

DORIS HUNDEBY

MRS. DORIS HUNDEBY of Regency Manor, Central Butte, passed away peacefully on Tuesday September 4, 2001, at the age of 84 years. Doris was born on the family farm in the Loreburn district in 1916. The family farmed there until moving to Elbow in 1929. After graduating from high school, Doris took her nurses training at the Sick Children’s Hospital in Toronto. In April 1943 she married her childhood sweetheart, Arthur Hundeby in St. Louis, Missouri. Doris and Arthur moved to Chicago where they resided for over 40 years. In Chicago, Doris was an operating nurse in the Illinois Eye, Ear, Nose, and Throat Hospital. In 1985 they returned to Sask. choosing to live in Central Butte. She was a member of the Women of the Moose in Bellwood, Illinois and still kept in contact with them. Doris also square danced, bowled, and was an active bingo player. Both she and Art were very supportive of many charities, as well as the Church in Central Butte and Elbow. They were instrumental in hearing aids being installed in the Church pews in Central Butte. Doris is predeceased by her parents, Charlotte and Richard Ham; husband, Art; two sisters: Mary and Margaret; and two brothers: Earl and Ivan. She is survived by her sister, Irene (Bernard) German; as well as many nieces and nephews. Funeral Services will be held at the Central Butte United Church on Saturday, September 8, 2001 at 2:00 pm. Reverend Helen Reid will officiate. Interment will follow at the Elbow Cemetery. Memorials to Regency Manor, Central Butte, would be appreciated.

LARRY GROSENICK

It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden, though peaceful passing of Larry Grosenick on Tuesday July 16, 2002 at the age of 69 years. Larry was born to Alice and Otto Grosenick and grew up on their farm near Tilney, Saskatchewan with his younger brothers, Don (Glenys) Grosenick and Bob (Diana) Grosenick. After graduation from the RCMP Training Centre, Larry spent 28 years stationed in various areas throughout Manitoba, retiring as Sergeant. He was a long time member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Fraternal Order of Eagles, Masons and past Patron of Eastern Star. Larry is predeceased by his wonderful father Otto and infant daughter Arlene. He will be sadly missed by his mother, Alice Grosenick of Moose Jaw, daughter, Shannon (Ed) Fehr of Winfield BC; daughter, Barbara (Mike) Nash of Winnipeg MB; son Glen (Sherrie) Grosenick of Winnipeg MB; and their mother, Mary Ann. Larry also leaves to mourn his grandchildren: Tara, Derek, Shawn, Robyn, Cassandra, Alissa, and one yet to arrive; his best friend, Isobel; nieces, nephews, family and friends. Over the years Larry has had many hobbies. He never tired of learning and always found life and people to be of great interest. Our thanks to Dr. Kelly and staff of the SICU Regina General, for their excellent care of one we held so dear. Memorial Services will be held at W. J. Jones & Son Chapel, 106 Athabasca St. E., Moose Jaw on Saturday, July 20, 2002 at 1:30 pm. Cremation will take place at Prairie Memorial Crematorium with private Memorialization to take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Multiple Sclerosis Society, 150 Albert Street, Regina, S4R 2N2, or a charity of your choice would be appreciated. In living memory of Larry, a tree will be planted in Wakamow Valley by W. J. Jones & Son Funeral Home.

ROBERT (BOB) COUZENS

ROBERT (BOB) EDWARD COUZENS of Moose Jaw, passed away May 4, 2002. He was born in Moose Jaw May 20, 1910. His parents were Moose Jaw Pioneers, Reuben and Aggie (Holdsworth) Couzens. Bob spent most of his life in Moose Jaw. He married Dorothy Stevenson in 1932. He was Postmaster and ran the store in Stonehenge, Saskatchewan for a short time before he built and operated Couzens Grocery on Fairford Street, across from Crescent Park for many years. When the store was sold he worked until retirement at Moose Jaw Sash and Door. Bob was predeceased by his wife, Dorothy in 1985, son, Don (Dorothy) of Victoria, B.C. in February, 2002, brother, Gordon; sisters: Ruby Clemenshaw and Joyce Steel. He will be sadly missed by his daughter, Shirley of Vernon, B.C., brother Clarence (Mike) of Penticton, B.C., sister, Marjorie Weir of Seattle, Wash., five grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, as well as many nieces and nephews. At Bob’s request, there will be no funeral service. Flowers are gratefully declined. In living memory of Bob, a tree will be planted in Wakamow Valley by W. J. Jones & Son Funeral Home.
