Eileen Comstock
Eileen Elna Comstock was born on May the 7, 1926 to Carl and Elna Kopperud of the Cadillac district in Saskatchewan. The eldest of 5 Kopperud children, Eileen’s official “birthplace” is Section 27, Township 8, Range 14, West of the Third Meridian. Eileen spent her early years in the Boule Creek/Cadillac district, acquiring an abiding love of family and learning, along with a strong faith that would serve her throughout the rest of her life. Toward the end of World War II, Eileen borrowed a small sum from her father and enrolled in a two-month teacher-training summer course that had been set up to, as she said, “recruit warm bodies to fill teaching positions”. Upon successful completion of that course, Eileen began her teaching career, eventually ending up in Mitchellton. While teaching there, Eileen met a young farmer, Evert Comstock. As was the case in those days, young farmers often found their wives-to-be teaching in the local school. Eileen and Evert wed on January 14, 1949 at Eileen’s home country church in Cadillac. At the time of her passing, Eileen and Evert had been married for over 52 years…a true testament to both their love and devotion to each other, as well as their endurance!! Eileen was never one to sit around much. In addition to her teaching career and raising a family, she kept busy with church and school activities, service as a 4-H leader, tutoring neighborhood kids in everything from algebra to history and just generally being all of the things a modern farmer and farmer’s wife needs to be. Eileen and Evert had four children: Lyle (Carol Strykiwsky, Battleford), Anne (died at birth), Keith (Janet Harder, Regina ) and Karen (Jim Burke, Calgary ). Her family was a source of great pride for Eileen, as was she for them. Her strength, patience, ingenuity and penchant for delivering good advice while acknowledging it might well be ignored, made Eileen a wonderful wife, mother, mother-in-law and grandmother. It is very safe to say that no one has ever left Eileen and Evert’s home without being more that well-fed, and in possession of a standing invitation to come back and visit anytime at all. As Eileen told it, when she turned 55 she decided she had best get busy and start doing some of those things she had always wanted to do. In addition to taking up oil printing and watercolours, she started doing ceramics, and became an active “on the tractor” farmer, which as she said, was “a lot more fun than housekeeping.” She was very proud of this part of her career and in many descriptions of her station in life, proclaimed her self as a farmer. Eileen was always a great storyteller and in recent years she started a bit of a second (third??...fourth??) career as an author. Her stories were a regular feature on CBC Saskatchewan radio and she also recorded two audio tapes. The achievement she was perhaps most proud of was the printing of her first book, “Aunt Mary in the Granary and Other Prairie Stories”. Eileen’s second book was completed only a few weeks ago and is scheduled to reach bookstore shelves in the fall of 2001. Eileen is survived by her loving husband Evert, a brother (Carl), three sisters (Carolie, Kay and Betty), her children and six grandchildren (Lynn, Sarah, David, Alan, Matthew and Richard). The Funeral Service will be held on Wednesday, July 25, 2001 at 2:30 p.m. from Central Lutheran Church, 27 Hochelaga St. W., Moose Jaw. Pastor Doug Shepherd will officiate. Interment will follow at Rosedale Cemetery. Donations in Eileen’s name, in lieu of flowers, may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, 223 Fairford St. E., Moose Jaw, Sask., S6H 0E1. In living memory of Eileen, a tree will be planted in Wakamow Valley by W. J. Jones & Son Funeral Home.
