ROBERT RICHARD "RED" NEWTON
It is with great sadness the family of Red Newton of Moose Jaw announces his passing on Monday, February 7, 2011 at the age of 88 with his family by his side. Dad was born on April 8, 1922 in Ontario and raised in Winnipeg. He joined the RCAF in Winnipeg at the age of 19 and was then posted to Mountain View, Ontario. While there he was trained as a clerk and telephone operator. Soon afterwards Dad learned the RCAF was recruiting operators from the RCAFWD (Women's Division). Dad and a friend wanted to see who these 'replacements' were, so as it turned out, they learned one of the new telephone operators was in the infirmary and they went to check things out. Dad said, "and there she was, Mom, in her hospital bed. She just had her tonsils out and, seeing her for the first time, I knew she was the one for me". Sometime later, Dad and Mom went on a date with another couple to Toronto. They headed to the Royal York Hotel to have lunch. When they were seated at their table and after looking over the menus, these 'kids' realized they could not afford lunch. As the music played "Waltzing Matilda" they quickly and quietly left the dining room. From Mountain View, Mom and Dad's courtship followed them to their postings in Gander, Newfoundland and Halifax, Nova Scotia. Together they took the train west, first stopping in Winnipeg where Dad introduced his parents to the 'girl of his dreams.' From Winnipeg they came further west, getting off the train in Moose Jaw to meet Mom's parents. When Dad met Grandpa Larson, who towered over everyone at 6 feet, 6 inches tall, Dad wondered to himself, what this mountain of a man thought of his daughter being with this scrawny kid from Manitoba. On July 5, 1943 Mom and Dad were married in Mawer, Saskatchewan. After their time in the service, Mom and Dad moved to Moose Jaw and Dad began to work at Leonard Fysh/Pharmasave Drug Store. Dad worked at the drug store for 51 years from September 1, 1947 to August 31, 1998. During those years he also had the opportunity to work with two of his sons, Laurie and Bob who were the mailboys, working after high school during the week. Dad loved working with the customers; giving each and everyone of them his personalized service and over the years he became a Moose Jaw institution. Dad had a love for bowling as was evident by the trophies he collected. He enjoyed the game of backgammon and watching the Roughriders and Ottawa Senators. Dad leaves behind his son, Laurie (Lin) of Edmonton, daughter Karen and her daughter Karlea of Moose Jaw and his great-grandson Jakob, son Bob (Bonnie) and their girls Rachel of Regina and Melissa of Nova Scotia. He is also survived by his sister Olive (Bill) Kandia of Winnipeg, sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Ollie and Glenn Moen of Moose Jaw, many nieces and nephews and the last of the original staff at the drug store, Mabel Payne. Dad was predeceased by Violet, his beloved wife and soul mate of 66 years on February 16, 2010, his youngest son Randy in 1996, parents Ernest and Olive; and brother, Ed. A Graveside Memorial Service will be held at Rosedale Cemetery on July 23, 2011 at 10:00 am, conducted by Della Ferguson. The family would like to especially thank the first floor medical staff at the Moose Jaw Union Hospital for their professional care and compassion. In lieu of flowers anyone so wishing may make a memorial donation in Dad's name to the Moose Jaw Humane Society. In living memory of Red, a tree will be planted in Besant Park by W. J. Jones & Son Funeral Home.
