RICHARD GLEIM

Richard Gleim of Moose Jaw and formerly of the Chaplin-Shamrock districts passed away on Monday April 4, 2011. Richard was born on October 29, 1928 on the “Truit Place” south of Morse in the Flowing Well district. He met Bernice Grant, who became the love of his life, in the fall of 1963 and they were married on April 11, 1964. Their home was on the farm where they raised their three children, Greg, Audra, and Nancy and enjoyed “the good life” working the land and raising cattle. 1998 saw a move into Chaplin where they lived for 11 years. Richard still went to the farm to help Greg during the busy times, hauling bales, and driving tractor and combine. The move to Moose Jaw came in 2009 to a new home where he enjoyed many hours on the deck his grandson Bo and his daughter Audra built. Richard enjoyed travel, to Las Vegas, Alaska, Hawaii, and a Caribbean cruise. Holidays to BC and the USA in their motorhome were also a highlight. Richard’s pride and joy were his children and grandchildren. He was predeceased by his parents George and Maria Gleim, five brothers and eight sisters; mother and father-in-law, Lila and Gordie Grant. His memory keepers are his wife, Bernice; son Greg and Rhonda, Nathan and Tamara; daughter Audra and Kevin Hallborg, Bo (Ali), and Ashley (Tyson); and daughter Nancy; brothers Ted and Mae and Gus and Darlene; sister Selma and Brian; sisters-in-law Gerry and Uwe Schuett and family; Shirley and Ray Hankey and family; many nieces, nephews and the Schreiber family cousins. The Celebration of Richard’s life will be held at W. J. Jones & Son Chapel on Monday April 11, 2011 at 1:30 pm. Della Ferguson will officiate. Memorialization will take place at Prairie Memorial Columbarium. In lieu of flowers, memorials to the Moose Jaw Health Foundation, 455 Fairford St. E., Moose Jaw, S6H 1H3, would be appreciated. In living memory of Richard, a tree will be planted in Besant Park by W. J. Jones & Son Funeral Home.

DENNIS BENSON

Dennis Benson died at home February 13, 2010. He is survived by his wife Linda and sons Mark and Scott.
A native Moose Javian, Dennis spent his youth frequenting the corner rinks, tennis courts, and ball diamonds of the city. While attending the U of S, he met a spirited young lady from Banff; from then onward, he and Linda were inseparable. The couple moved back to Moose Jaw where they raised two sons and Dennis spent his career as a chartered accountant, retiring as a partner with GE Noren and Partners.
Dennis loved sports and was a keen golfer and a committed supporter of his home teams. He also had a wider-ranging spirit of adventure, embarking with his family on hiking and canoe trips throughout northern and western Canada. He found his spirit in wilderness: beneath the larch in a snowy alpine pass, paddling whitewater amongst the spruce, or wondering at the meadowlarks and the season’s first crocuses.
Dennis loved his family with an encompassing passion and devotion, and throughout his journey with ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease), he touched many with his grace, humour, and optimism. In turn, he often spoke of his blessings in having caring people around him throughout his life. Of his illness, he said, “I didn’t choose this road, but it’s the road I’m on. When I wake up every morning, I have a decision to make about how I’m going to live my life. I’m going to live it the best I can.”
He did. And he inspired others to do the same.
The Celebration of Dennis’ life will be held at Minto United Church on Friday, February 19, 2010 at 1:30 pm. Reverend John Carley will officiate. Memorialization will take place at a special place determined by Dennis and his family at a later date. Donations may be made to the ALS society of Saskatchewan, Box 31028, Normanview Mall, Regina, S4R 8R6. In living memory of Dennis, a tree will be planted in Besant Park by W. J. Jones & Son Funeral Home.

NEIL (MICKEY) ARTHUR McLAFFERTY

Neil (Mickey) Arthur McLafferty passed away July 2, 2011 in the Moose Jaw Hospital with daughter Cheryl by his side. Dad was born on the farm at Secretan May 13, 1920. The family later moved to Parkbeg, then Boharm and finally settled in Moose Jaw. Dad served in England for 4 years during WWII as an airframe maintenance mechanic with 408 Squadron. He returned to Moose Jaw in 1945 and the following year Dad met and married, the love of his life, Mary Declare. They would have been married 65 years this December. Right from his early years Dad loved working with his hands and his first big project was building a barn for some neighbors when he was only 15 years old. This started a long career of building, renovating, and repairing not only for him and Mom but also for their family, friends, neighbors and all the many different organizations Dad belonged to. His career spanned from working for JI Case Implements, building and running Caribou Sheet Metal, working for the CPR for a very short time, running the Skyline Motel, restaurant and golf driving range out by the base, working for Hugh Gas and finally a job that lasted the longest - Manager of Canadian Propane for 35 years, a job he was very proud of and that over the years gained him and Mom many wonderful friends. Although Dad was busy at work he still found time for a great many other projects. He and Mom built their first home on the corner of Fifth Ave. and Saskatchewan St. W. Then they bought a lot at the corner of Seventh Ave. and Elizabeth St. and built their family home where their 3 children would grow up. He and Mom also built one of the first 2 cabins at Buffalo Pound Lake beside Andy Rankins Lodge. Dad's next big project was when he bought the old fire hall on the corner of First NW and Saskatchewan St. in 1960. He and Mom soon transformed it into a wonderful apartment building that they named after their three children calling it Dachmar Gables. Sadly they lost the building to a fire in 1993. Dad felt one of his biggest accomplishments was in the early 1970's, when as President of the Moose Jaw Exhibition Company he worked with the city on procuring a new area for the Exhibition Grounds. The buildings at the old site were falling apart and a developer from Calgary had spoken with Dad about building a mall where the old grounds were. Dad picked the site for the new grounds, attended a great many city council meetings to make sure the transition would go smoothly, drew the plans and finally began moving buildings, hiring contractors and staff. Along with Mom and a number of Directors and volunteers he did a lot of the physical labor involved in building up the new Exhibition Grounds. He paved the way for Moose Jaw to receive a mall, and the whole area north and east of the golf course to be opened up for development. In 1973 Dad was very proud when he received the CHAB Moose Jaw Citizen of the Year Award and equally proud in 1977 when the Exhibition Company named a portion of their main building after him. Dad was a member of numerous other service clubs over the years including Rotary Club, Kinsmen and Chamber of Commerce, Legion and went on to join the Masons, Shrine Club, and the Elks. He has earned the distinction of being a lifetime member of most of them. Dad is predeceased by his beloved Mary on April 30th of this year. He is also predeceased by parents Neil and Susan McLafferty, brothers Pat, Robert and Jackie, sister Marjorie, son-in-law Wayne Bilyk, daughter-in-law Kathy McLafferty and numerous other relatives and friends. With all that Dad did and accomplished in his life, the most important to him were family and friends. He treated each and everyone he met with respect, kindness and politeness. In the last few weeks as my Dad lay dying in the hospital, staff from both the Regina and Moose Jaw hospitals commented on what a wonderful man he was. We also received the same complements from the staff at Chez Nous where he had resided for a very short time. Dad is survived by son, Daryl McLafferty of Thibodaux, LO., daughter Cheryl and special son-in-law Gerry Miller of Moose Jaw, daughter Marlo Bilyk of Duchess, AB. He is also survived by grandchildren Kevin (Melissa) McLafferty, Damon McLafferty, Trevor McLafferty, Rebecca (Derek) Darley, Paul (Erika) Miller, Jay Bilyk, Jodi (Dustin) Janke and great-grandchildren, Katherine and Isaiah McLafferty, Jared and Jordyn Darley, and Brooklyn and Kaila Miller and sisters Monica Huber and Lorraine Greer, as well as in-laws, nieces and nephews. The Funeral Service will be held at W. J. Jones & Son Chapel on Tuesday, July 12 at 1:30 p.m. Della Ferguson will officiate. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Moose Jaw Shrine Club Travel Fund, 1767 Main, St. N., Moose Jaw, S6J 1E6, would be greatly appreciated. In living memory of Mickey, a tree will be planted in Besant Park by W.J. Jones & Son Funeral Home.
