BALZAR HILSENDAGER

MR. BALZAR HILSENDAGER, age 79 of Central Butte passed away on December 21, 2009 in the Central Butte Regency Manor. He was predeceased by his parents and step-son Kim Nelson. Balzar is survived by his wife Viola, step-daughter Pat (Ted) Hensen – Hixon, BC; four grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, four brothers and four sisters as well as many nieces and nephews. There will be no funeral service. Following cremation, memorialization will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Moose Jaw Humane Society, Box 1658, Moose Jaw, S6H 7K7. In living memory of Balzar, a tree will be planted in Besant Park by Prairie Memorial Funeral Home, Chaplin.

JOHN "GARTH" HANNA

John “Garth” Hanna of Cardross passed away peacefully on February 24, 2011 at the age of 80 years. Garth was born April 12, 1930 to Ed and Wilhemina Hanna on the family farm near Horizon, SK. The family moved to Imperial in 1946. Garth began working with the Department of Highways. Garth married Elizabeth Braun in 1957. After working in Regina for a few years they moved to Cardross to farm in 1964. Garth was a member of the Assiniboia Masonic Lodge, Assiniboia Shriner’s Club and a councilor with the RM of Terrell 101. He is predeceased by his parents Ed and Wilhemina; son Stewart; brother Neil; sister Fran and stepdad Archie Robertson. Garth will be sadly missed by his wife, Elizabeth; children Scott (Debbie), Maureen, Rodney (Tracy) and Darcy; grandchildren Jamie (Ashley), Chris, Darren, Ryan, Laura-Lee, and Leah; one great-grandchild on the way; brothers Allison (Jo) Hanna, Dale (Diane) Hanna as well as numerous nieces and nephews. A Celebration of Life will be held Wednesday, March 2, 2011 at 1:30pm at W. J. Jones and Son Chapel. Della Ferguson will officiate. Interment will take place at Crane Valley Cemetery at a later date. For those so wishing memorial donations can be made to the Shriner’s Patient Travel Fund, 1767 Main St. N., Moose Jaw, S6J 1L6 or the Alzheimer’s Association, #301 – 2550 12th Ave., Regina, S4P 3X1. In living memory of Garth, a tree will be planted in Besant Park by W. J. Jones & Son Funeral Home.

NORM SMITH

Norm Smith passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday afternoon with family at his side. Born in Tuxford on December 24, 1917 dad grew up and helped farm the family farm north of Boharm. Norm married Audrey McKeown on December 25, 1942 and shortly after was sent to Red Deer, Alberta with the Canadian Forces until posted overseas in 1943. Dad served overseas until 1945 at which time he returned home to the farm. There he and Audrey raised their three children. They lived on the farm until moving into Moose Jaw in 1978. Norm was the 'telephone trouble man' for the Pioneer Rural Phone Company and also the snowplower for the community for many years. In later years he devoted countless hours working with the Moose Jaw Exhibition Company. He was also very involved with the Light Horse Federation and through these endevours made many friends. Even after moving into Moose Jaw dad drove out to the farm every day and remained very involved in the operations there. Predeceased by this parents, Albert and Maude Smith, his wife Audrey, sister Mary. He is survived by three children: Pat (Bill) Fasick - Calgary; grandchildren: Dorrie - Kelowna, Brent (Lisa) - Calgary; great-grandchildren, Aiden and Gavin; Mike (Shirley) Smith - Moose Jaw, grandchildren: Jason - Calgary and Quinton (Heidie) – Moose Jaw; great-grandchild, Jayden; Jackie (Grant) Hogg - Red Lake, ON; grandchildren: Jody (Greg) Bogaert - Port Lambton, ON; and Kirby - Canmore, AB. Following a private family interment, friends are invited to join the family in celebration of Norm's life at the W.J. Jones & Son Family Centre, 262 Athabasca St. E. on Saturday, February 5, 2011 from 2-4 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations, if so desired, may be sent to a charity of choice. In living memory of Norm, a tree will be planted in Besant Park by W. J. Jones & Son Funeral Home.

Don Kroshus

It is with saddened hearts that we announce the passing of Donald Francis Kroshus on June 26, 2011. Don was born in Glenwood, Minnesota on May 5, 1929 to George and Grace Kroshus; shortly thereafter they moved to Assiniboia where his father started providing dental care to the people of that district. Don followed in his Father’s footsteps attending Northwestern University in Chicago and graduating as a dentist as well. Don married Betty Bryerton and moved to Moose Jaw in 1954 and began practicing dentistry; he retired in 1991 and had many years working in his metal and wood working shop. All those who knew Don appreciated his quest for perfection. Don was a master craftsman by all means. Don leaves behind to mourn the girl of his dreams, his wife and companion for over 45 years, Mildred Tulloch; his sons John (Claire), Jim (Roseline), and daughter Mary. Don was predeceased by one son Richard. Later in life Don spent most everyday swinging a golf club or walking in Wakamow with his pals “The Grumpy Old Men” who gave Don a tremendous amount of joy and laughter. At Don’s request, there will be no funeral; instead there will be a “Celebration of Don’s life” that will be held at a later date. Flowers are gratefully declined; if you wish, donations may be made in Don’s name to the Wakamow Valley Authority, Box 1266, Moose Jaw, S6H 4P9. In living memory of Don, a tree will be planted in Besant Park by W. J. Jones & Son Funeral Home.

JAMES "JIM" GIBBS

James William (Jim) Gibbs, died February 23, 2011 with “his hat on” at the Moose Jaw Union Hospital . Jim was born February 26, 1919 in Moose Jaw and resided his entire life in the Blue Hill - Briercrest District. Jim served Blue Hill United Church in many capacities and was a valued member of many community clubs and organizations. He was a tinkerer, mechanic, machinist, avid train lover and a farmer. He was also a member of the Briercrest Masonic Lodge #80, Lodge of Perfection, Rose Croix, Saskatchewan Consistory. Jim was predeceased by his wife, May (Gammage); sons-in-law, Wilfred Runzer and Ken Sempel; special brother-in-law, Joe Jasper and other sisters-/brothers-in-law. He is survived by his daughters: Linda Sempel, Karen Runzer and Grace Gibbs; son, Bill Gibbs; granddaughter, Kristin (Doug) Brooke; grandson, Robert (Jennifer) Runzer; great grandchildren: Jillian, Alaina and Adam Brooke; Joel and Regan Runzer; sister, Edna Jasper; nephew, John (Lori) Jasper; niece, Helen (Dale) Whitfield; great niece Nancy (Lee) Anthony, great nephews, Michael Whitfield (Amanda Campbell) and Tyson Jasper; great-great nephew and nieces, Wyatt, Alexa and Josie Anthony; sister-in-law, Margaret English; cousin, Bill Shortland and family, and many appreciated nieces and nephews. Many thanks go to Drs. B. Van Heerden, and Majid; staffs at Moose Jaw Union Hospital, Chez Nous and Velda and Kathy. A memorial service will be held on Sunday, February 27 at 1:30 at Briercrest United Church, Briercrest. Masonic funeral rites will be presented. Flowers are gratefully declined. BARRY BEALS

Mr. Barry Beals, age 67, passed away peacefully at home on Sunday June 19, 2011, with his family and friends by his side. He is predeceased by his parents; sister Sharon in infancy and his brother Beryl. Barry will be lovingly remembered by his wife Sharon; his children Deanna Kettering (Tom Gustavon), Curtis Beals, Kevin (Patty) Wale and Barb (Brent) Halling; grandchildren Rhonda, Rene, Terrance, Josey, Samantha, Crystal and Madison: great-grandchildren Matthew, Jaydon and Colsen; two brothers Don (Darlene) Beals, and Danny (Anna) Beals; his faithful companion Bailey; as well as many other relatives, nieces and nephews. Following a Private Family Service on Thursday June 23, 2011 a Memorial Tea will be held at the Jones Family Centre, 262 Athabasca St. E., beginning at 2:00 pm. Memorials to the Canadian Cancer Society, 61B Ross St. W., Moose Jaw, SK S6H 2M2 would be appreciated. In living memory of Barry, a tree will be planted in Besant Park by W. J. Jones & Son Funeral Home.

BYRON ELDSTROM

Byron Marvin Eldstrom of Moose Jaw passed away June 13, 2009, after a brief illness. Byron was born in Moose Jaw on October 29, 1938. He is predeceased by his parents Lester and Ella, brother Cal, and father-in-law Harold Davey. Byron is survived by his wife of 48 years, Gina; son Rick (Darlene) and sons Styles and Dallas; daughter Tannis (Ray) and son Jesse; brothers Arnold (Lynda) and Don (Jo-Ann); mother-in-law Ruby Davey; and numerous nephews, great-nieces, and cousins. Byron worked for many, many years at Redi-Mix until his retirement. He then started his own gravel delivery business, retiring permanently in 2003. Byron had a passion for his 1969 Sport Plymouth Fury and his 1949 Kaiser, showing them in many car shows and parades. He loved vacationing in Hawaii and had made many trips before suffering a heart attack in 2003. He was a member of the Anavets, Legion, and was a long time Warriors season ticket holder. One of his latest pleasures was meeting the gang at Tim Horton’s every afternoon at three. But his three brightest stars were his three grandsons, Styles, Jesse, and Dallas. He enjoyed watching them play hockey and lacrosse, spending thousands of hours in a hockey rink. The Funeral Service will be held at W. J. Jones & Son Chapel on Wednesday June 17, 2009 at 1:00 pm. Pastor Marvin Seaborg will officiate. Interment will follow at Sunset Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials to the Moose Jaw Health Foundation, (Colorectal Cancer Fund), 455 Fairford St. E. Moose Jaw, S6H 1H3, or the Sask. Heart & Stroke Foundation, 279 3rd Ave. N., Saskatoon, S7K 2H8, would be appreciated. In living memory of Byron, a tree will be planted in Besant Park by W. J. Jones & Son Funeral Home.
