Phyllis “Irene” Warner of Moose Jaw passed away on March 7, 2011 at the age of 96. Irene resided at High Park Towers and was one of the original tenants. She was a life member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 59, loved her teddy bears, and was an avid sports fan, especially the Toronto Blue Jays. She enjoyed crafting, and always had a project on the go, loved word search puzzles, jigsaw puzzles, cards and of course Bingo. She is predeceased by her husband Thomas Victor; her parents Arthur and Rachel Harrison; sister Olive Cook; brother Victor; and son-in-law J. W. Elliott. Irene will be sadly missed by her daughters Lorraine Elliott and Phyllis (Bob) McLaren; grandchildren Jim Elliott of Calgary, Denise (Kevin) Junek of Regina, Rob McLaren of Calgary, Lori McLaren of Calgary; great-grandchildren Brandon, Lauren, Tyler, Lanni, R.C., Nicole, Samantha; great-great-grandchildren Kol, Kori May and Liam; sisters Gladys Kindred of Regina, Marjorie Damour of Moose Jaw, Dorothy Winstanley of England; as well as many nieces and nephews. A Funeral Service will be held at W. J. Jones and Son Chapel on Friday, March 11, 2011 at 1:30 pm. Della Ferguson will officiate. Interment will follow at Rosedale Cemetery. A time of visitation will be held Thursday evening from 7-8 pm at the Funeral Home. In living memory of Irene, a tree will be planted in Besant Park by W. J. Jones & Son Funeral Home.
EVELYN FIGLEY
EVELYN FIGLEY of Moose Jaw, passed away at her residence on Monday, March 9, 2009 at the age of 81 years. Evelyn was born July 21, 1927 near the family farm at West Bend, Saskatchewan to Mike and Marie Andrusiak, the oldest of four children. Predeceased by her parents, one brother, one son, Merv (2006) and grandson, MCpl. Joshua Brian Roberts (2008), Evelyn leaves to mourn, Lorne Bray, her companion; her seven surviving children: James Figley (Donna McBeth), Keaton VanBryce (Roxanne), Stan Figley (Shelley), Ron Figley (Krystine), Gene Figley (Beth), Rod Figley (Claire), Bonny Rossler (Martin); grandchildren: Shawn, Morrison, Courtney, Kelli, Addrienne, Brady, Stephanie, Amelia, Tyler, Matthew; great-grandchildren: Athena, Jade, Lexx, Grace, Dale and Devin; brother, Lorne Andrusiak and family; and numerous nieces and nephews. The Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, March 12, 2009 at 3:30 p.m. in the W. J. Jones & Son Funeral Chapel, 106 Athabasca St. E., Moose Jaw. Major Donald Law will officiate. Cremation will follow with memorialization in the family plot at Foam Lake, Saskatchewan at a later date. DANIEL STRATULAT
Daniel Stratulat, age 89 years of Moose Jaw, passed away peacefully with his family present on March 9, 2003. Daniel was born on October 25, 1913 in the Lakenheath district, Saskatchewan. He farmed in the Kayville area until 1981 when he retired to Moose Jaw, where he took up fishing and playing cards with old friends. He is predeceased by his parents, Peter and Teoffila Stratulat; brothers, Wesley and John; and sisters, Lena Kuntz, Zanova Donison, and two in infancy. Daniel is survived by his loving wife, Iliana; daughters; Alice (Merv) Rayner – Moose Jaw; Pearl (Gerry) Hodges – Regina; Margaret Wiles and Katherine Stratulat – Regina; brothers: Nick (Eva) Stratulat – Abbottsford, B.C.; and Connie (Grace) Stratulat – Moose Jaw; sister, Claire (Mike) Marusiak – Regina; numerous grandchildren; great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews. Evening Prayers will be held at W. J. Jones & Son Chapel on Thursday March 13, 2003 at 7:30 pm. The Funeral Service will be held at the Funeral Chapel on Friday, March 14, 2003 at 10 am. RAY BELL
On April 18, 2011, Ray Bell of Baildon, lost his battle with depression. A cherished teacher to many for 31 years in Moose Jaw Public, Ray’s diverse interests included being a poet, cartoonist, Rider and Blue Jay fan, eccentric item collector and he was an avid coffee companion. Despite his retirement, Ray was still often seen in the hallways of the schools. He was very active in his children's sports and hobbies, from coaching basketball to supporting them in curling, fastball, and the arts. Supportive, yes, humour in a very boisterous manner, definitely! Quick to smile, Ray was ready to laugh, or create the laugh. He was ever ready to listen, always with kind eyes, and words of love and support for family and friends. Ray had a deep love and devotion to his wife and children. Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Cathie; children Lindy (Trent), Norma (Kevin), Jeremy (Leita), Holly (Martin), Megan (Tyler), Courtney (Kale), and Jed; grandchildren, Lyra, Chantelle, Bryce, Sarah, Jayce, Brendan, Royce, Dahli; in-laws: Don and Sharron Esch; Dan (Denise), Jeff (Suzanne); Chris (Lisa); six nieces, many cousins, and good friends. He is predeceased by his parents, Mildred and Norman; and mother-in-law Peggy Esch. The Celebration of Ray’s life will be held at Minto United Church on Saturday April 23, 2011 at 1:30 pm. MARY McLAFFERTY
Mary Anna McLafferty passed away on Saturday, April 30, 2011 in Chez Nous, surrounded by loved ones Neil, Cheryl and Gerry. Mary was born in Rosetown, SK, December 15, 1923 and later moved to a farm at Anglia, SK. She moved to Moose Jaw in 1945 and the following year she met and married Neil (Mickey) McLafferty. They would have been married 65 years this December. Mom spent all her married life assisting Dad in whatever project he happened to be involved in over the years. She helped build and run Caribou Sheet Metal, (their first home), helped build a house on Fifth Ave, and on Elizabeth Street, (their long term home), two cabins at Buffalo Pound Lake, and their pride and joy when they turned the old fire hall on First and Saskatchewan Street into an apartment building called Dachmar Gables. Mom also helped Dad by cleaning, painting and repairing Canadian Propane, the old Moose Jaw Shrine Club and Masonic Building, and the old and new exhibition ground buildings. As well Mom enjoyed volunteering for Jobs Daughters and Demolay, and of course helping her children over the years with whatever they needed be it help moving, helping with the new grandchildren, or just listening on the phone. Mom was a member of Minto United Church. She had been a member of Daughters of the Nile and Wa Wa Shrine Auxiliary. In her later years she still enjoyed keeping a spotless house, singing along to the old hymns and songs on TV and visiting with family and friends at Happy Hour. Mary is predeceased by her parents Evelyn and Charles Declare, sister Gwen Woods, son-in-law Wayne Bilyk, and daughter-in-law Kathy McLafferty. She is survived by her husband Neil (Mickey), son, Daryl McLafferty of Thibodaux, LO, daughter Cheryl and special son-in-law Gerry Miller of Moose Jaw, daughter Marlo Bilyk of Duchess, AB. She is also survived by grandchildren: Kevin (Melissa) McLafferty, Damon McLafferty, Trevor McLafferty, Rebecca (Derek) Darley, Paul (Erika) Miller, Jay Bilyk, Jodi (Dustin) Janke and great- grandchildren, Katherine and Isaiah McLafferty, Jared and Jordyn Darley, and Brooklyn and Kaila Miller; and brother Earl Declare and sister Eileen Thompson. The Funeral Service will be held at W.J. Jones & Son Chapel on Thursday, May 5 at 1:30 p.m. Reverend John Carley will officiate. HAZEL HOBDAY
Hazel Annie Hobday of Moose Jaw passed away at the Moose Jaw Union Hospital on May 1, 2010. Hazel was born on December 5, 1919 and was the only child of Eva and Marvin Pratt. She was raised on the family farm in the Riverhurst area and later attended Normal School in Moose Jaw. She taught at Sunset School in the Buffalo Pound Lake district where she met her future husband Fred Hobday. Hazel and Fred married in 1943 and then settled in Moose Jaw where they raised their seven children. Hazel was a dedicated homemaker and a committed volunteer in her community. She was recognized for more than 50 years of active service with St. John Ambulance. Hazel was a member of Zion United Church and for many years was the Secretary of the United Church Women. For the last 5 years Hazel resided at Ina Grafton Gage Home where she enjoyed the various activities. Hazel was predeceased by her husband Fred in 1994. She is lovingly remembered by her sons and daughters: Ed (Colleen) - Saskatoon, Ken (Louise) - Calgary, Fred (Cathy) - Calgary, Cecil (Inger) - Gabriola Island, Muriel (Clive) Tolley - Moose Jaw, Joyce (Ivan Olynyk) - Saskatoon, and Jean - Moose Jaw; 14 grandchildren, and 4 great-grandchildren. The family would to thank the staff of Ina Grafton Gage Home and the members of the health care team at the Union Hospital for providing compassionate care for our Mother. The Funeral Service will be held at W. J. Jones & Son Chapel on Friday, May 7, 2010 at 2:30 p.m. Reverend Doug Hallman will officiate. Interment will follow at Rosedale Cemetery. MARY GEMMELL
MARY GEMMELL, age 85 years of Moose Jaw passed away Wednesday, April 8, 2009. Mary was born and raised in the Tuxford district. She received her education at Carmel School. Mary’s love of music was instilled in her at a very young age. She played piano with the Durrant family orchestra and entertained many at the Old Clinton Hall. She remained on the family farm until her marriage to Robert Gemmell in 1948. They resided in Tuxford later moving to their own farm in the Tuxford district. She loved to bake and was an immaculate housekeeper and enjoyed summer family vacations. In later years health issues became more prevalent causing her to move to Moose Jaw residing at Pioneer Lodge. Her love of pets continued throughout her many years. She especially enjoyed pet therapy at Pioneer Lodge and the many visits given by numerous caregivers. She is predeceased by her parents, Harry and Catherine Durrant, husband, Bob, infant daughter, Janet; sons: Larry and Terry; brothers: Gilbert and Alex Durrant; sisters-in-law, Dorothy Durrant and Joan Gemmell, brothers-in-law: Sid, Stan and Jim Gemmell. She is survived by sisters-in-law: Dorothy Gemmell and Beverly Gemmell, several cousins, nieces and nephews. The Funeral Service will be held on Monday, April 13, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. in the W. J. Jones & Son Funeral Chapel, 106 Athabasca St. E., Moose Jaw. Reverend John Carley will officiate. Private family interment will take place at a later date. Visitation for family and friends will be held Sunday evening (April 12), 7-9 p.m. at the Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorials to a charity of choice would be appreciated.
