It is with great sorrow that the family of Dr. Jeremiah Joseph Fitzgerald announce his peaceful passing on July 20, 2011 at age 90. Jerry was born January 27, 1921 in Cork, Ireland. After completing his secondary education, he served four years in the Irish army. He then attended University College, Cork, graduating in 1949 with MB, BCh, and BAO degrees. He married Catherine Hayden on February 24, 1954 in Dublin, Ireland, and they were blessed with four sons and eight grandchildren. Jerry practiced medicine in England for 13 years, and then immigrated to Canada in 1963, joining a medical practice in Swift Current. In 1966, the family moved to Moose Jaw where he continued his practice until his retirement in 1995. During his career, he served as President of the Medical Staff, as well as Chief of Medical Staff at the Providence Hospital. Jerry ended his medical career serving as the medical director of the day programs at Providence Hospital and later Providence Place. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and enjoyed reading, golf, gardening and travelling. He was predeceased by his parents, Jeremiah and Nora Fitzgerald; sisters, Eileen and Bridget; brothers, Gerald, John and James. He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Catherine (Kitty); sons Jeremiah (Jerry) and his wife Jean, their children Erin, Ryan and Sean; John; Paul and his wife Noreen, their children Kyle, Tara and Joshua; and James (Jay) and his wife Marie, their children Catlin and Allyson. Jerry will be remembered for his sense of humour, his quick wit, and the sparkle in his eye. His love for his family and his dedication as a physician were very evident, and the joy that he brought to everyone he came in contact with will be sorely missed. Special thanks to the staff of Pioneers Lodge for the care provided to Jerry. An Evening Prayer Service will be held at St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church, 1064 Third Ave. NW, Moose Jaw on Thursday July 28, 2011 at 7:00 pm. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated at the Church on Friday July 29, 2011 at 11:00 am. Father Rick Krofchek will be the Celebrant. Private interment will take place at Rosedale Cemetery. For those so wishing, donations may be made to Pioneers Lodge Moose Jaw, 1000 Albert St. , S6H 2Y2 or to the Providence Place Foundation, 100 2nd Ave. NE., Moose Jaw, S6H 1B8. ALVIN GUSAAS
Alvin George Gusaas of Moose Jaw, and formerly of Mortlach, passed away surrounded by his family on Thursday, March 31, 2011 at the age of 86 years. Alvin was born on November 2, 1924 on the family homestead in the Eastleigh District, where he resided with his parents. Alvin met Phyllis Johnston in 1952 and they were eventually married on June 11, 1960 in Kelowna, BC. After their honeymoon, they returned to the family farm, the place where Alvin was the happiest and they raised their family. Alvin served on the RM of Rodgers from 1971 – 2008. He was one-of-a-kind, always marching to his own drum and he loved to tell jokes. He also enjoyed listening to Warrior games on the radio, discussing current events, the weather, and picking crocuses in the spring. Alvin and Phyllis semi-retired from farming in 2003, and made their home in Moose Jaw. He is predeceased by his parents George and Jennie Gusaas, sister Myrthe in infancy, his daughter Wendy in infancy, his son Wayne, brothers-in-law Frank Holeksa, Gaston Gaucher, Harold Johnston, and sister-in-law Irene Gaucher. Alvin is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Phyllis – Moose Jaw; daughter Wanda (Kelly) Ridley – Moose Jaw, son Brian Gusaas – Saskatoon; grandchildren Ashley Ridley and Steven Ridley – Moose Jaw, Madelyne Gusaas and Elliott Gusaas - Warman; sisters Muriel (Hardy) Wutke, and Inez Holeksa – all of Moose Jaw; sister-in-law Theresa Johnston – Kelowna; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and many cherished friends. In keeping with Alvin’s wishes, there will be a private graveside service. Della Ferguson will officiate. In Alvin’s memory, donations made to a charity of choice, would be appreciated. DORIS KENNEDY
DORIS MAY KENNEDY (DOT) passed away Saturday, May 24, 2003 at the age of 85 years. Born in England, she came to Canada as a War Bride in 1946 and resided in Moose Jaw until her passing. She was a member of the Eastern Star and Daughters of the Nile. Dot worked for the Health Region until she became a devoted mother to her two sons. She spent many enjoyable years at the cottage at Buffalo Pound Lake. She was a wonderful lady who will be remembered for her sense of humour, love of dogs and her kindness and generosity. Predeceased by her son, Pat in 1997 and her husband, Chuck in 1998. Dot is survived by her loving son, Bill (Karen) of High River, her three grandchildren and longtime friend, Marj. Bill and Karen would like to thank Dot’s friends who supported her over the years, especially after Chuck’s passing. In keeping with Dot’s wishes, there will be no services. Dena Marina Harlos (nee: Huber)
November 29, 1934 - September 8, 2010
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Dena after her short, courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. Born and raised in Hearne, SK, she was the youngest of four. She was married to Ted on December 9, 1954 and they resided in Moose Jaw until they moved to a farm in the Mitchellton area in 1970 with their six children and lived there until her passing. Dena loved playing the piano, spending time with her family, her flower garden, cooking and in her earlier years riding her horses. With always having a house-full of people it gave her the opportunity to try out new recipes from her huge collection of cookbooks. She was very involved in the family farm and enjoyed helping out where she could - whether it be running for parts, driving the grain truck or helping with calving. Her love for animals brought her great pleasure over the years, especially the time she spent with the family dogs. She will be lovingly remembered by her husband Ted of 55½ years, her children Monty (Otilia), Carol (Terry) Wallace, Lyle (Bobbie Jo), Rodger, Wade and Holly (Rod) Brownlee; her grandchildren Gerrad (Brenda), Perry (Gwen), Jeff (Denise), Crystal, Jordan and Jenna, her great-grandchildren Dawson, Ashton, Haaven, Cheyanne, Blake, Carmen, Shaylene, Faith, and Wyatt; her sister Ruth, as well as many nieces, nephews, special friend Irene Knox and numerous other family members and friends. Dena was predeceased by her parents Eva and Louie Huber, her brothers Karl and John Huber, grandson Michael and granddaughter Jaryn. A celebration of Dena’s life will be held at W. J. Jones & Son Chapel on Monday September 13, 2010 at 1:30 pm. Della Ferguson will officiate. Interment will follow at Rosedale Cemetery. Visitation will take place on Sunday evening 7 – 8 pm at the Funeral Home. OLIVE KINES
1929 – 2009
With her husband Robert at her side and surrounded by her loving family, Olive Madeleine Kines (nee Fradette) left this world on Saturday, April 4, 2009 to meet her Savior and reunite with family and friends in heaven. Born October 7, 1928 in Radville, Saskatchewan, she lived most of her life there and in Moose Jas. Olive is predeceased by her parents, Napoleon and Clara Fradette (nee Galarneau), her brothers Romeo and Joseph and sisters Reina, Jeanne d’Arc, Armande and Juliette, and her brother-in-law Father Delbert Kines. Olive is survived by her loving husband of 57 years, Robert, and children Richard (Dianne), Dwight, Brian (Mona), and twins Ken (Natalie), and Kindra; grandchildren Jannelle, Derek, Miranda, Jonathan (Margaret), Jillian (Dustin), Chelsea ( Devon ), Chyler, and Nichole (Baljit); and her only great-granddaughter, Tayen. Olive is also survived by her siblings, Fernand, Lucien, Roland, Marcel and Andrea and by Robert’s brothers and sisters, Gordon, Allen, Merwin, Margaret, Gertrude, Mary, as well as many other relatives. Olive was a wonderful woman and after she passed Robert kissed her and said “I was a lucky man to have the best woman on earth for my wife”. Olive was a dedicated and loving mother, but was also a career woman. She worked at Shibly’s Store in Radville, Safeway in Moose Jaw and Safeway and Eaton’s in Edmonton. In 1976 she started her own business, Simcoe Draperies, out of her home in Moose Jaw. After twelve years, she moved the business downtown and operated it with Kindra for five years. She retired in 1993 but kept busy sewing for her family and friends until she passed – her unfinished projects just as she left them on her sewing machine and work tables at home. All her grandchildren are now the proud owners of baby quilts, specially made for each of them. Aside from sewing, Olive thoroughly enjoyed gardening, scrapbooking, music and spending time playing cards with many of their friends. An Evening Prayer Service will be held on Monday, April 6 at 7:30 PM at W. J. Jones & Son Chapel, 106 Athabasca Street East, Moose Jaw. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, April 7 at 2:00 PM at Church of Our Lady, 566 Vaughan Street, Moose Jaw. Father Tony Sevali will be the Celebrant. Cremation will take place with family memorialization at a later date. At her request, flowers are gratefully declined, but donations in Olive’s name may be made to Providence Place, 100 2nd Avenue NE, Moose Jaw, S6H 1B8.In living memory of Olive, a tree will be planted in Besant Park by W. NANCY "KARLEEN" HAGAN
Nancy “Karleen” Hagan, age 66, of Mossbank, passed away peacefully on November 13, 2010 after a long, hard battle with cancer. Predeceased by her parents and her brother Ken, she is survived by her husband Hugh, her children: Garry (Linda) Gallot, Susan Gallot, Kevin Gallot, and Don Gallot; her sister Twilo (Lambert) Taks; her brothers Elmo ( Alice ) Sturgeon, Iral (Roseann) Sturgeon, sister-in-law Dejane Barton; brothers-in-law Dwight Hagan and Levi Hagan; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to the nurses and support staff for the wonderful care and kindness Karleen received. A Celebration of Karleen’s life will be held at W. J. Jones & Son Chapel on Thursday November 18, 2010 at 1:30 pm. Pastor John Duerksen will officiate. Memorialization will take place at Sunset Cemetery. ADAM BISHOFF
Adam Bishoff was born in Montmarte October 9, 1919 and passed away January 20, 2011 at Providence Place, Moose Jaw. He is predeceased by sisters Kay, Elizabeth (Betty), Rose, Genevieve, Anne and Clementine; brothers John and Jack. Adam is survived by his wife Irene; son Ron ( Irene), grandson Adam (Lea), grandson Scott(Judy), great granddaughter Lynnella, great-grandson Justin: son Alan (Valendie), grandson John ( Katie), great- granddaughter Rebecca, step-daughter Felicia step-great-granddaughter Zoe, step parent-grandson Osawask, step-great-grandson Elijah, step-daughter Lindsay, step-great-granddaughter Ava; daughter Jo-Anne (John Heggie), grandson Keith (Gaetanne), grandson Geoffrey (Shannon), grandson Dale (Jennifer), great-grandson Archer, and granddaughter Marcie (Braden). After returning from the War, Adam and Irene farmed in the Keeler area for 40 years before retiring to Moose Jaw where they enjoyed socializing with friends, dancing and bridge. Throughout Adam’s adult life, he was committed to social justice. We are grateful for the care Adam received at Guardian Grove, Providence Place. A Memorial Tea will be held at the Co-op Marketplace Café, 500 1st Ave. N.W., on Friday, January 28, 2011 at 7:00 pm.
