ANNE VICKERS
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Anne Vickers, aged 88 years of Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan on October 3, 2010. Mom was born in Hamilton, Scotland on March 8, 1922 and even though she was only six years old when she moved to Canada with her family, all things Scottish were always dear to her heart. Mom was predeceased by her parents, her husband of 58 years, Wes, and her sister Margie as well as brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law. She will be missed by her children Marion (Philip); Peggie (Murray); Cathie (Nicolaus); Patricia (Satish); Lesley (Richard); Janet; and Mac (Dawn) as well as seven grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, brother and sisters-in-law, many nieces and nephews and numerous friends. Mom’s family was always important to her and until recently birthdays and anniversaries were always remembered with a card and gift. Mom greatly enjoyed her job at the Conservatory of Music in Regina which she held until the family moved to Montreal in 1974. The move was a big change for Mom, but she entered into life there fully – learning to drive on the Decarie and to take the metro with ease. She loved shopping trips down St. Catherine’s Street. Mom was also devoted to her work with the Gideons Ladies Auxiliary hosting many of their meetings and enjoying distributing New Testaments to the nursing students each year. She was an active member of the various churches she attended – driving out to Hemmingford, Quebec each Sunday with Dad while he preached at the Presbyterian Church there; becoming part of the Christian Women’s Club through the Baptist Church in Montreal, and then a member of the Women’s Missionary Society at St. Mark’s Presbyterian Church in Moose Jaw. She enjoyed life and laughter. She loved to sing hymns and sometimes we’d find her playing them on the piano if she thought none of us was at home. Even after her bad fall in the spring of 2006, her sense of humour was evident and she was pretty quick with a smile when greeting visitors to her room in Providence Place. She will be missed for her caring, thoughtful ways but we rejoice that she is home with her heavenly Father. Following a private interment, a Memorial Service will take place at W. J. Jones & Son Chapel, 106 Athabasca St. E., on Saturday, October 9, 2010 at 3:00 pm. Pastor Barry Holtslander will officiate. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Gideons International, c/o Mr. Doug Bristow, 1304 Queen Crescent, Moose Jaw, S6H 3G4 or to St. Mark’s Presbyterian Church, 80 High St. E., Moose Jaw, S6H 0B8.

RUTH "ARLENE" HOWATT
Ruth “Arlene” Howatt (nee Breakwell) passed away peacefully in the Moose Jaw Union Hospital on October 16, 2010. Arlene, known affectionately to some as “Ted”, was born on May 14, 1920 to Dale and Anna Breakwell on the family farm west of Mossbank, SK. She attended Centre Ridge School and enjoyed working on the farm, as she was truly an “outdoor person”. Arlene worked in the Mossbank vicinity and played music for dances throughout the area. It was at those dances that she naturally got together with her future husband, James “Arthur” Howatt, the floor manager and square dance caller. They were married in Moose Jaw on December 28, 1942, and raised three children. The Howatt home was always open to family and friends, and there was an abundance of both. Their house was a meeting place for many visits, meals, parties, and thousands of card games. It also became the stopping place (sometimes for weeks or even months at a time) for relatives, friends and even friends of friends, from Ontario to British Columbia. Arlene longed to have a home close to all the modern amenities and in September, 1979, her dream came true when she and Art retired to Moose Jaw. After Art passed away in November, 1996, Arlene moved in with her daughter, Margaret Ann until her passing, taking the occasional short trip to stay with Harvey or Mildred. Arlene was predeceased by her parents, Dale and Anna Breakwell; brothers Al and Les Breakwell, sisters Anna (in infancy), May, and Mary; her husband Arthur Howatt; as well as numerous aunts and uncles. She is survived by her son Harvey (Doreen Josvanger) Howatt of Regina; daughter Margaret Ann Abell and special friend Bill Morrell of Moose Jaw; daughter Mildred (Carl) Carlson of Swift Current; grandchildren: Dwayne (Heather) Howatt of Saskatoon; Wendy Howatt of White City; Gene (Lisa) Carlson of Kansas City, Missouri; Adam Carlson of Scandia, AB; Larissa (Daniel) Downs, Lorinda (Cody) Unvoas, and Nolan Carlson – all of Swift Current; great-grandchildren Macy and Ellis Howatt; Kelsey Howatt; Elsa Downs and Avrielle Unvoas. At Arlene’s request there will be no funeral. A private family service and interment will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials to the CNIB, or Kinsmen Telemiracle, would be appreciated. In living memory of Arlene, a tree will be planted in Besant Park by W. J. Jones & Son Funeral Home.
