CHRIS VAN STRIEN

Mr. Chris van Strien of Moose Jaw passed away October 28, 2003. Born and educated in Apeldoorn, Netherlands, he worked forced labor in Germany. He worked as a pastry baker in Apeldoorn and in 1954 immigrated to Canada to Kindersley, Saskatchewan and from 1958 to 1960 owned and operated the bakery in Wilkie, Saskatchewan. In 1960 Chris purchased and operated Dutch Bakery in Moose Jaw. He served as President of the Kinsmen in 1969. Chris loved skiing and hunting at Buffalo Pound Lake. Predeceased by his parents, Jan and Hendrika van Stien and one brother Joost, Chris is survived by his wife, Gerry of Moose Jaw, son, John (Linda); two granddaughters: Jannal (Miles) Yeroschak and Robin van Strien, one brother, Jan (Rene); four sisters: Alie, Tiney (Jan), Lien (Leo) and Rie (Herman) – all from Holland, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. A Celebration of Chris’ Life will be held on Thursday, November 6, 2003 at 3:30 p.m. in the W. J. Jones & Son Funeral Chapel, 106 Athabasca St. E., Moose Jaw. Linda Owens will officiate. Memorialization will take place at a later date. Memorials for the Saskatchewan Parkinson’s Association, Box 102, 103 Hospital Dr., Saskatoon, Sask., S7N 0W8 or to the Saskatchewan Heart & Stroke Foundation, Box 521, Moose Jaw, Sask., S6H 4P2 would be appreciated. In living memory of Chris, a tree will be planted in Wakamow Valley by W. J. Jones & Son Funeral Home.

HAZEL GREENSIDES (Nee: Erickson)
(September 30, 1911 - May 7, 2009)

Hazel passed away at Pioneer Lodge at the age of 97 years. Left to mourn are her son Elwood (Leona) - Moose Jaw; two grandchildren: Tammy (Rob) Herbert and Bill (Diane) Greensides - Regina and Bill and Tammy's mother Gay Merritt; five great-grandchildren: Kyle and Mackenzie Herbert, Jessie, Riley and Drake Greensides - Regina; two sisters: Joyce (Gordon) Brooks - Moose Jaw and Lorraine (Evart) Ball - Alberta, as well as many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents Clarance and Lillian Erickson, her husband Ken Greensides who passed away on April 27, 1980; five brothers and three sisters. Ken and Hazel farmed in Readlyn, Saskatchewan for ten years. They then farmed at Harrowby, Manitoba for five years. They moved back to Saskatchewan in 1957. Hazel worked in several places in Moose Jaw including the Army and Navy Department Store. Ken and Hazel liked to travel. She lived in Temple Towers for twenty-five years. Hazel enjoyed Bingo, playing cards and visiting with family and friends. The Funeral Service will be held in the W. J. Jones & Son Funeral Chapel, 106 Athabasca St. E., Moose Jaw on Monday, May 11, 2009 at 1:30 p.m. Pastor John McCubbing will officiate. Interment will follow at Rosedale Cemetery. Flowers are gratefully declined, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Pioneer Lodge, 1000 Albert Street, Moose Jaw, S6H 2Y2. In living memory of Hazel, a tree will be planted in Besant Park by W. J. Jones & Son Funeral Home.

MARION MAY

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Marion J. May (nee Willison) on Friday December 17, 2010 at the age of 77. Marion was predeceased by her parents James and Isabella Willison. She is survived by her husband Orval; son Garth (Charlene), daughter Sharon, son Leslie; five grandchildren; sister Laura (Bob); aunt Mina Black; uncle Jim Kirkness; aunt Greta (Bob) Rogers, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. In keeping with Marion’s wishes there will be no funeral service. A private family memorialization will take place at a later date. Flowers are gratefully declined. For those wishing memorial donations can be made to Kinsmen Telemiracle Foundation, 2217C Hanselman Court, Saskatoon, SK, S7L 6A8. In living memory of Marion, a tree will be planted in Besant Park by W. J. Jones & Son Funeral Home.

GARRETT HOBBINS

Garrett Wade Hobbins passed away tragically on Sunday March 27, 2011 at the age of 19. He will be deeply missed by his loving family: mother Mary (Victor Ford), father Clayton, sister Dayna (Jesse Forsyth and niece Savannah), brothers Jaden and Christien; grandparents Hilda Schuett (Mel Guild) and Leonard Hobbins; uncles and aunts: Karen McCann (Terry), Laurel (Dave) Kelly, Julie Ramsay (Jim), Fay (Jim) Cockburn, Gail (Scott) Jorstad, Nola Hnatiuk, Dale (Shirley) Hobbins, Dean Hobbins (Susan), Craig (Irene) Hobbins, Maurice Hobbins, Daryll Hobbins (Lori), Lionel Hobbins, Kenneth Hobbins (Shelley), Collette (George) Munroe; and numerous cousins including miracle baby Paige. Garrett is predeceased by his Grandma Doris Hobbins, Grandpa Albert Schuett, and baby cousins Marlo Kelly and Isaac Hobbins. Garrett was born in Regina January 10, 1992 and moved to Edmonton in 1999. There his passion for bikes led him to excel in BMX Bike Racing. Garrett loved the country, and after having spent a lifetime of summers at the Cockburn farm, in 2009 he moved to Briercrest. He thrived in the country life with his free spirited love of his toys and animals, kids, friends and family. His work experience also grew, first working in carpentry with his Great-Uncle Jerry Nestman, and later as a farm hand with the Cockburn family. Most recently his work led him to Regina each day for a job in the welding field, where he was proving to be a valuable employee, and credited as a reliable, wonderfully spirited young man. He will be remembered for his infectious smile – that mischievous, quirky grin…and his “love you” farewells. A Funeral Service will be held at St. Joseph’s Parish in Claybank, SK, on Saturday April 2, 2011 at 1:00 pm. An Evening Prayer Service will be held at the Church on Friday evening at 7:00 pm. Father John Prince will officiate. Interment will take place at the Claybank Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Moose Jaw YMCA Strong Kids Program, in Garrett’s name. In living memory of Garrett, a tree will be planted in Besant Park by W. J. Jones & Son Funeral Home.

DONALD GRAND

It is with deep sadness the family of Donald John Martin Grand announces his passing at the Moose Jaw Union Hospital on May 20, 2011. Donald is predeceased by his Dad Hubert; Uncle Martin, Aunt Eileen and their daughter Karen Eidem; Uncle Benny Moen, and his Grandparents. He is survived by his wife of nearly 30 years, Barbara; son Martin, daughter Meagan, his Mom Maud; sisters and brother Karen (Ian) - Sherwood Park; Ron (Alice) - Moose Jaw; Janice - Moose Jaw; Sherry-Lynne (Duane) - Raymore, SK; Aunt Gladys Moen - Stewart Valley, SK; brother-in-law Frank (Cheryl) Muhle - Quesnel, BC; sister-in-law Marlene (Mike) Bartel - Moose Jaw; many nieces, nephews, and cousins; and his two cats Romeo and Ruffus. Donald was born in Swift Current on November 9, 1940, later moving to Moose Jaw to the South Hill area. He attended Empire School and Central Collegiate, graduating in 1958. Donald then enrolled in the Psychiatric Nursing Program at the Sask. Training School (now Valley View Centre), graduating in 1962. He later trained in E.E.G. and E.C.G. Donald met Barbara Muhle at the Bowling Lanes in 1980, they soon became a couple and were married in 1981. Bowling was one of Donald's favourite things and he continued to bowl until 2009. Summers were spent at Turtle Lake with friends Vic and Barb Muirhead and Pat and Joe Stronach, among others. Donald retired from Valley View Centre in Oct.1987 and became a full time Dad to Martin, Meagan would follow in 1992. He was President of the Tuxford Rec. Board for a few years until his declining health. He was always willing to help his community and neighbors in any way. Buffalo Pound was a favourite spot to meet some of his many friends after work for a hot dog roast, and for a water ski until dark. The Funeral Service will be held at W. J. Jones & Son Chapel on Friday May 27, 2011 at 1:30 pm. Reverend David Moore will officiate. Interment will take place at Rosedale Cemetery. Visitation for Family and Friends will take place on Thursday evening 7 - 9 pm at the Funeral Home. Memorials to the Moose Jaw Health Foundation, 455 Fairford St. E., Moose Jaw, S6H 1H3, or to a charity of choice, would be appreciated. In living memory of Donald, a tree will be planted in Besant Park by W. J. Jones & Son Funeral Home.

PHYLL VESEY

Phillippa (Phyl) (Low) Vesey passed away on May 30, 2010. She was born in Mossbank, SK on March 7, 1919 to Ralph and Hazel Sawin, the oldest of seven children. Predeceased by her husbands, Mac Flack, 1982, James Low, 1995, and Roland Vesey, Nov. 2009; her brothers, Leon (Lil), Guy and Del, sisters, Bonnie (John) Petroschuk, and Norma Robbins, she is survived by four children, Mervyn (Lori) Flack - Trail, BC, Bill (Ruth) Flack - Vanscoy, SK, Carole (Kurt) Larsen - Spruce Grove, AB, and Sharon (Gordon) McFadden - Castlegar, BC; thirteen grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild; brother, Butch (Barb) Sawin - Mossbank, brother-in-law, Lorne Robbins of Cranbrook, BC, sisters-in-law, Betty Sawin - Calgary and Elaine Sawin of Delbume, AB, special nephew and niece, Jim (Linda) Low and Brenda (Howie) Johnson, and many other nieces and nephews. Phyl lived most of her life in Moose Jaw and was very active with the Moose Jaw and District Seniors. She worked at the Singer Sewing Centre for many years and along with her husband, Jim Low, they operated Amil’s Taxi. She worked at many hockey games, as well as billeting hockey players in her home. At the time of her death, she was residing at Timothy Eaton Gardens. In keeping with Phyl's wishes, cremation has taken place with a private family burial followed by a Memorial Tea at Timothy Eaton Gardens, 510 Main St. N., on Monday, July 5, from 2 to 4 p.m. Memorials to the Moose Jaw & District Seniors, would be appreciated. In living memory of Phyl, a tree will be planted in Besant Park by W. J. Jones & Son Funeral Home.

GEORGE DURIE

Long time farmer of the Eastview district, GEORGE WALLACE DURIE passed away peacefully April 3, 2009 at Providence Place, Moose Jaw at the age of 88 years. Predeceased by his parents, William and Jeannetta Durie, a brother, Allan Durie (Dorothy) and twin sister, Joyce (Mel) Blythe, brothers-in-law: Wilson Phillips and Cal (Mary) Bailey, George is survived by his wife, Ruth, son, Bruce (Eleanor) Durie, Tanys (Bill) Ludka; grandchildren: Jeannette (Chris) Briggs, Jerrod Durie (fiancé, Jolene Faulkner), Paul Durie, Tyler Ludka, as well as his sister, Shirley Phillips and brother, Dr. Robert Durie (Jo). George had a love of the land and his greatest treasure was his family and friends. A Celebration of George’s life will be held at the Royal Canadian Legion Hall, 268 High Street West, Moose Jaw on Monday, April 6, 2009 at 2 p.m. Memorialization will take place privately at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Moose Jaw Health Foundation, 455 Fairford St. E., Moose Jaw, S6H 1H3 or to Providence Place Foundation, 100 –2nd Ave. N.E., Moose Jaw, S6H 1B3. In living memory of George, a tree will be planted in Besant Park by W. J. Jones & Son Funeral Home.
