DARWIN BROWN

Darwin Brown passed away on May 18, 2011 with his wife Angie at his side. He is survived by his wife Angie; sons Devin, Ryan and Robert Keith (Bobby); parents Bob and Kathy Brown; sister Nona (Brian) and brother Currie (Carolyn). Darwin was born in Moose Jaw and spent most of his life here except for a brief period of time in Lethbridge, Alberta. Growing up, Darwin loved playing hockey, often skipping out on trumpet lessons to sneak down to the rink with his friends. Darwin had his favorite hobbies for every season. In the summer and fall he loved camping, the outdoors, scuba diving in his youth and golfing, enjoying his final golf tournament last weekend. Darwin enjoyed his time spent at archery, scouting and hunting with Bobby. In the winter Darwin loved watching his boys curl, play foosball and shoot pool. He played in the CPR annual hockey tournaments, and received recognition for his contributions in planning the 25th Annual Tournament held in Moose Jaw. Darwin’s top priority was spending time with his family. He also enjoyed coffee time with his pals. He was always planning his next great trip to Mexico with Angie. Darwin worked as electrician for the Canadian Pacific Rail since 18 years of age. He had a great gift for story telling and was very easy to like. It seems everywhere he went he would find someone to talk to even in another country. He could be joking with you one minute and talking philosophically the next, the most optimistic and happy go lucky person you have ever met. Darwin will be remembered fondly always by his family and friends. A Celebration of Life will be held at Minto United Church Thursday, May 26, 2011 at 1:30 pm. Della Ferguson will be the Celebrant. Interment will take place at Sunset Cemetery.
Our lives were all better for knowing you.
In living memory of Darwin, a tree will be planted in Besant Park by W. J. Jones & Son Funeral Home.

CATHERINE MARGARET GEHLEN

Catherine’s valiant struggle came to a close at Pioneer Lodge in Moose Jaw. Born south of Prince Albert June 5, 1928, Catherine spent her childhood in Shaunavon, SK. Following her graduation from Shaunavon High School in 1947, Catherine came to Moose Jaw where she became a graduate of the Providence Hospital School of Nursing in 1950. Catherine’s passion for her profession led her to attend the University of Toronto in 1953/54 where she obtained a certificate in “Teaching and Supervision in Nursing”. This allowed her to guide, mentor, and share her professionalism and love of nursing with a great many students and colleagues in Toronto, Lethbridge, Medicine Hat and Vancouver. Settling in Moose Jaw in 1964, Catherine returned to the Providence Hospital, where she enjoyed a long career in several different departments, retiring as the Nursing Supervisor on the surgical ward in 1993. True to her commitment to the care of others, Catherine became the full time, permanent guardian of her young niece and nephew in 1970. As a “single parent”, Catherine spent many years attending various school functions as well as warming the benches at swimming pools, dance studios, hockey rinks and baseball fields. Catherine took pride in her children’s accomplishments and always encouraged them to do their best. Following her retirement, Catherine enjoyed her dogs, reading, walking in Wakamow and doing crossword puzzles, but found her greatest joy in spending time with her grandchildren. Catherine was a willing playmate, a patient teacher, and a sympathetic listener to her grandchildren and her love and investment in their well-being was clearly evident. Each grandchild enjoyed a special relationship with their Grandma that will be forever treasured. In 2008, Catherine was delighted to begin welcoming her great-grandchildren. Predeceased by her parents Francis and Mary Gehlen as well as brothers Lloyd, Phil, Joe, Victor (Bud), and James, Catherine leaves to mourn her passing, her son Darrin (Lana) Gehlen and cherished grandchildren Mariah and Mikayla of Airdrie, Alberta, her daughter Heather Patterson and beloved grandchildren Ashlie (Dale) Beutler, Cassandra, Samantha, William and Kiarra as well as precious great-granddaughter, Natalie Beutler. Catherine will be missed by her siblings, Anna and George Stevenson, Nick and Jean Gehlen, Delores and Henry Ziefflie, and Leo Gehlen as well as sisters in law Dolly and Bertha and many nieces and nephews. Catherine’s family wishes to thank Dr. VanHeerden and Dr. Dakota for their vigilant care. We would also like to express our gratitude to mom’s caring friends and the staff of Crescent Park Villa, Chez Nous, Providence Place, and Pioneer Lodge for their patience and kindness through Mom’s difficult illness. At Catherine requested, there will be no funeral service. Interment will take place in Shaunavon at a later date. Memorial donations may be made to The Saskatchewan Lung Association, 1231 8th St. E., Saskatoon, SK, S7K 2H8 In living memory of Catherine, a tree will be planted in Besant Park by W. J. Jones & Son Funeral Home.

GORD PAULSON

With great sadness, the children of Gord Paulson announce his passing June 29, 2010 at his care home in Westlock, AB. Dad was born December 31, 1931 in Moose Jaw, SK. He was the second of three sons born to Augusta and Erik Paulson. Dad completed his Grade 8 education at King George School then left the classroom to work at his father’s concrete business (Paulson and Sons). He continued his work career at the BA/Gulf Oil/PetroCan Asphalt Plant, retiring after 38 years of service. Even after his retirement Dad was most comfortable wearing his “company blues” as he fondly referred to his blue work shirt and pants. He married Marion Cockerell in 1954 and together they had seven children. Dad always had a project in the works from building our first home on Redland Ave. to his last big project of constructing granddaughter clocks for each of his children. Over the years he enjoyed curling, camping (we have fond memories of Dad chasing the bears away from our campsites by banging the garbage can lids together), woodworking, organizing the Christmas parties at work, and his trips to Hawaii. Dad was known for his quick laugh, powerful size and big heart - always willing to offer a hand. Dad was a long time resident at Buffalo Pound Lake where he enjoyed his solitude and the nature around him. The only thing that brought him more joy was when friends and family stopped in to visit. Dad’s door was always open and the coffee was always on. Predeceased by his parents and older brother Knud (Myra), he will be lovingly remembered by his children: David (Mary) of Prince George, BC; Margaret (Stan) Fieber of Thorhild, AB; Sandra (Maurice) Couture of Moose Jaw; Janet (George) Gregory of Surrey, BC; Heather (Bill) Hildebrandt of Grand Coulee; Greg (Carla) of Prince George, BC; and Robin (Bob) Newans of Moose Jaw. He has also been blessed with twenty-three grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Dad also leaves to mourn his brother Ken (Arlene) of Moose Jaw and nieces and nephews. A Celebration of Gord’s life will be held at W. J. Jones & Son Chapel on Wednesday July 14, 2010 at 11:00 am. Private memorialization will take place at Sunset Cemetery. Memorials to the Village of South Lake, for a memorial bench in memory of Gord, would be appreciated. In living memory of Gord, a tree will be planted in Besant Park by W. J. Jones & Son Funeral Home.

(Jessie) Marian Holland
February 25, 1930 - April 14, 2011

It is with heavy hearts but a sense of immense gratitude for a life well lived that we announce the passing of our dear Wife, Mom, Grandma & Great-Grandma. Marian is survived by her loving husband of fifty-nine years, Ron, son Kim (Joyce), son Mark (Samantha), daughter Joan (Jack Kirkpatrick), daughter Janice (Blaine Clarke), son Todd (Carol), 14 grandchildren, and 6 great-grandchildren. Marian is also survived by brothers, Ken (Phyllis) Ridgway, and Glen (Marlene) Ridgway; Aunt Grace Wastradowski; and numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and extended family. Marian is predeceased by her parents Ernest and Jessie Ridgway and brother James Ridgway. Marian was a life-long member of the Avonlea community where she grew up on the family farm southwest of town. She attended Richburg School to grade 8, took grades 9 & 10 by correspondence, and grades 11 & 12 in Avonlea. After high school she attended the Moose Jaw Union Hospital School of Nursing and graduated as a registered nurse in 1951. In November 1951 Marian and Ron married and settled into a busy farm life where Marian was a true partner in the farming operation. She also kept busy with gardening, community activities and raising five children. At the same time she continued her nursing career, commuting to the hospital in Moose Jaw while keeping the household organized and running smoothly. Her energy and willingness to take something on seemed boundless. Marian was very involved in her church, teaching Sunday School, leading junior choir, and was a long-standing member of the UCW. She was an active volunteer, serving several terms on the Thunder Creek Home Care Board, the Avonlea Housing Authority, and Drop In Center over many years. Her hands were never still as was demonstrated by numerous hand-made sweaters, afghans, and quilts - one for each grandchild for their high-school graduation. Beyond her many accomplishments, Marian will be remembered by her family and all who knew her as a loving and gracious woman. With her warmth and genuine interest she made each and every one of us feel like we were special to her. She leaves us with many treasured memories. The family would like to extend our deep appreciation to the people at Home Care and Palliative Care who helped with Mom's care during her final months at home. The Funeral Service will be held at the Avonlea United Church on Thursday April 21, 2011 at 2:00 pm. Reverend Marilyn Keerak will officiate. Interment will follow at Hillcrest Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Avonlea United Church Memorial Fund or the Coteau Range Manor of Avonlea would be deeply appreciated. In living memory of Marian, a tree will be planted in Besant Park by W. J. Jones & Son Funeral Home.
