Samuel “Roy” Reid
It is with great sadness that we announce that our much loved Dad, Grandpa, Poppa, and Great-grandpa is now at peace. He passed away at Providence Place in Moose Jaw on Friday, October 22, 2010 with daughter Jo-Anne and grandson Warren at his side. Roy was born on July 14, 1925 in Brandon, Manitoba to Samuel and Isabella Reid. He was the youngest of seven children. Roy met his beautiful wife of 64 years, Doreen, in Brandon and they were married on September 14, 1946 just after he returned from overseas. During WWII Roy served with the Algonquin Regiment in Belgium and France where he was wounded, and captured, and spent the last nine months of the war in a prisoner of war camp. Shortly after their marriage, Dad began working for the CPR, following in the path of his father and brothers. He retired from the CPR as a conductor in 1985 when he and mom moved to a beautiful acreage on the outskirts of Saskatoon. Dad was particularly proud of his vegetable and flower garden, spending many hours keeping their yard looking like a well manicured park. Many happy summers were also enjoyed at their cabin at Brightsand Lake. Dad loved the outdoors, and between the acreage and the cabin, he took every advantage to appreciate nature whether it was working on creating a beautiful walkway through the trees at their home or spending a relaxing afternoon fishing on the lake. Although he was an accomplished hockey player in his youth his favorite sports team was always the Roughriders. Roy is survived by his loving children; daughter Jo-Anne; son Ray (Myrna); son Geoff (Lori); son Perry; 10 grandchildren; and 3 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife Doreen in September of this year, by his parents Samuel and Isabella, sisters Jean and Hazel, and brothers Andy, Lorne, Joe, and Lloyd. A private family memorialization will take place at Sunset Cemetery. In lieu of flowers the family has requested that donations be made to the Sask. Heart & Stroke Foundation, 279 3rd Ave.N., Saskatoon, S7K 2H8. In living memory of Roy, a tree will be planted in Besant Park by W. J. Jones & Son Funeral Home.
