LAING, MARGARET RUTH (NÉE SLOAN) It is with great sadness that the family of Margaret Laing, Moose Jaw, announces her death at Moose Jaw on Friday, November 16th. She was predeceased by her parents (Robert and Ruth Sloan) and her sister-in-law Gaynor Nelson. Margaret is survived by her loving husband of 51 years, The Rev. Dr. Donald Laing; their children: Robert Laing (The Rev. Joan Rennie-Laing) of Fort Nelson, BC, The Rev. Deborah Laing (Joseph Anglin) of Rimbey, AB, and Catherine Drader (Austin) of Saskatoon; grandchildren: Leia Laing, Patricia Anglin, Christina Laing, Christopher Drader, David Drader, Thomas Drader, Thomas Anglin, and Aylish Anglin; great-grandchild, Michael Anglin; brothers: James Sloan, John Sloan (Elvina), David Sloan (Carol), Ralph Sloan (Carolin); sisters: Mary Berge (Walter), Jean Wilson (Eric), Dorothy Sloan, Elsie Crerar (James), Eleanor Hughes (Lyle), and Edith Allenby (Dennis); brother-in-law John Nelson (Vera-Lee); thirty-two nieces and nephews and their spouses and children; numerous cousins. Following cremation, a memorial service in celebration of Margaret’s life will be held at St. Andrew’s United Church, Moose Jaw, on Wednesday, November 21st at 1:30 PM, conducted by The Rev. Nobuko Iwai; her cremated remains will be placed in St. Andrew’s Garden of Memories. Margaret was born in Cabri in 1937 and raised in Hazlet, SK, where she attended primary and high schools; after her marriage she completed her B.A. degree (Sociology major) at the University of Saskatchewan. She married Donald Laing, the United Church student minister of Hazlet in 1956; for the next two years she worked in a bank in Saskatoon while Don completed his studies in theology. Margaret and Don lived in Hazlet, Saskatoon, Leask, Cabri, Regina, St. Andrews (Scotland), Edmonton, and Moose Jaw. She shared her own ministry with her husband, Don, supporting his work wherever they lived. She was a homemaker after the birth of her children, apart from seven years in Edmonton when she worked part-time in a fabric retail store. As a seamstress, Margaret made many clothes, toys, quilts, and other items. She was active through the years in church choirs, a CGIT leader, a member of the United Church Women, and a member of the United Church Presbytery and Conference. She typed essays, books, and theses for students, a professor, and her spouse, and prepared the annual report of St. Andrew’s United Church, Moose Jaw, for many years. The Laings travelled regularly and extensively in Europe (especially Scotland), to Israel, Mexico, Guatemala, the Bahamas, Hawaii, and all over North America. Margaret`s family would like to express special gratitude to The Rev. Nobuko Iwai, Dr. George Miller, Dr. Fred Wigmore, and the caring staff of Moose Jaw Union Hospital. MARGARET ELIZABETH (EDWARDS) KING passed away peacefully on January 3, 2007, at Providence Place in Moose Jaw, just eight days from her 89th birthday. Margaret was born in Kerrobert, SK, and raised in Grande Prairie, AB and Scotsguard, SK. After moving away from home, she lived in Fort William and then London, ON, prior to her marriage to Bert in 1940. Margaret and Bert lived in Moose Jaw for over sixty years. They took their children and grandchildren camping and traveled widely in their retirement years – North and Central America, Japan and Asia, Great Britain, the Galapagos Islands and Equador. Margaret was devoted to her family. She was a quiet, reserved person of many talents, who loved golfing and gardening, painting and photography, creative writing, sewing and crocheting, reading, and playing the piano and organ. She loved baking, and her desserts were legendary – especially her ginger snap cookies. Margaret had twinkling eyes and a ready wit. She was clever and funny, and loved playing cribbage, bridge and Scrabble, until she acquired Alzheimer disease in her later years. She was predeceased by her parents, George and Barbara Edwards, two brothers, Mac and Jim, an infant daughter, Anita, and one son, Rick. She is survived by her loving husband of 66 years, Herbert (Bert) King of Moose Jaw, four children: Ted (Kerry), Russell (Jennifer), Betty Anne (Andrew) Reid, and Lois Salter, fifteen grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, four brothers and four sisters. Margaret was deeply loved, and will be sorely missed. The family is very grateful to all those in Providence Place who cared for Margaret in the past two years. A Memorial Service will be held on Monday, January 8, 2007 at 1:30 p.m. in the W. J. Jones & Son Funeral Chapel, Moose Jaw. Linda Owens will officiate. Memorialization will take place at Rosedale Cemetery. For those so wishing, a memorial donation in Margaret’s name, to the Alzheimer Association, #301 – 2550 – 12th Avenue, Regina, S4P 3X1, would be gratefully accepted. It is with sorrow we announce the passing of Margaret Calvert. Born April 1, 1921 and went to be with the Lord on December 29, 2007. Margaret was married to Joseph Calvert who passed away in 1989. She is also predeceased by her grandson Matthew in 1988. Margaret will be sadly missed by her daughter Jo-Ann McBennett (Jim) of Prince Rupert, BC, and her sons Bob (Jackie), and Ab (Sandra) of Moose Jaw. She will also be sadly missed by her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, sister-in-law Dorothy of Vancouver, and nieces and nephews. Margaret worked many years at Eaton’s and enjoyed years at their cottage at Buffalo Pound Lake. A Family Service will celebrate her life. Pastor Larry Hasmatali will officiate. GLADYS NORMAN
Mrs. Gladys Maude Norman of Moose Jaw passed away suddenly on Friday July 29, 2005 at the age of ninety-five years. Gladys was born on a farm south of Moose Jaw near the Canadian Forces Base on August 8, 1909. She attended school and Central Collegiate in Moose Jaw. In 1936 she married Bert Norman and the couple lived on a farm south of Pasqua. For many years Gladys worked at Eaton’s and several ladies clothing stores including Heasman’s. After retiring Gladys became active with the Royal Purple Lodge in Moose Jaw where she served in many capacities. She thoroughly enjoyed her garden and took great pride in it. She is predeceased by her parents, her husband Bert (1943), one brother: Allan and one sister Hazel. She is survived by two sons: Ken (Doreen) – Moose Jaw and Graham (Sharon) – Naphtha, Alberta also six grandchildren, five great grandchildren and one great-great granddaughter. Her sister Mildred – White Rock, B.C. and sister in law, Maybelle – Moose Jaw, two nieces and one nephew. The Funeral Service will be held at W. J. Jones and Son Chapel on Friday August 5, 2005at 1:30 p.m. Reverend Frank Mitchell will officiate. Cremation will follow with Memorialization at Rosedale Cemetery at a later date. It is with great sadness the family announces the passing of our dear husband, father and grandfather, Marcel Aime Wilvers, at the age of 75. Marcel passed away on January 23, 2009, surrounded by his loving wife and girls, after a short battle with cancer. Marcel was born in Bellgarde, Saskatchewan on December 5, 1933 and lived in the area for most of his life until he married Maria Pierrard on October 27, 1956. Marcel spent much of his life farming and working as a carpenter which he greatly enjoyed. He took pride in building two of his family’s homes in Weyburn, where they lived for many years. Marcel also worked in hotel/motel management, and he and his wife Maria owned and operated motels in small Saskatchewan communities before moving to Moose Jaw in 1981. Marcel always enjoyed a life of simple pleasures. With his young family, he loved to go camping, play baseball, and spend evenings playing cards and games. In his retirement he took pleasure in spending time in Crescent Park amongst the birds and squirrels, going for walks, visiting the Library, and most importantly spending time with his children and grandchildren, whom he was so proud of. Marcel kept his amazing sense of humor and brave spirit until the end, and we are all so proud of him for that. Marcel was predeceased by his parents, Jean and Lambertine; numerous aunts, uncles, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, cousins, nieces and nephews. He is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Maria; his six daughters: Patty, Jocelyne (Leo) Moe, Brenda (Darryl) Grevna, Karen, Cindy, and Nicole (Bret) Rowlinson; and his ten beloved grandchildren: Eric, Doug, Travis, Jared, Janelle, Jenna, Chris, Emma and Morgan; his sisters and brothers: Lorraine (Jean) Mahy, Jeanne Pierrard, George (Yvonne), and Roland (Joyce); as well as an aunt and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law. Family and friends are invited to a Service of Remembrance at the W. J. Jones & Son Funeral Chapel on Tuesday, January 27, 2009 at 1:30 p.m. Linda Owens will officiate. MRS. LEONA THOMAS (nee Brentnell), age 95, of Moose Jaw passed away on Thursday, January 22, 2004. Leona was born in Lakeview, Ontario and moved west at an early age with her parents. Leona prided herself for her baking and won prizes at the Moose Jaw Fair for pies and buns and bread. She was a longtime member of the Alliance Church and was involved with many of the women’s groups within the church. She was predeceased by her parents, her first husband, Emery Meadows in 1969 and by her second husband, Richard Thomas in 1996, as well as two brothers: Clifford and Elwood. Leona is survived by her son, Gordon of Moose Jaw, one sister, Goldie Newton of Calgary, as well as a niece and her two nephews. The Funeral Service will be held on Wednesday, January 28, 2004 at 10:30 a.m. from the W. J. Jones & Son Funeral Chapel, Moose Jaw. Pastor Cory Steinson will officiate. Mrs. Sheila A. Foulston of Regency Hospital, Central Butte and formerly of the Eyebrow district, passed away on Friday January 23, 2004 at the age of 96 years. Sheila is predeceased by her parents; husband, Angus; and two brothers, Louie Large and Jack Large. She is survived by son, Donald (Sharon) – Eyebrow; granddaughter, Darla (Brian) Klokeid – Seattle, WA; and many nieces and nephews. Funeral Services will be held at The Eyebrow Memorial Hall, Eyebrow, Saskatchewan on Friday January 30, 2004 at 2:00 pm. Pastor David Laughton and Pastor Darren Godsoe will officiate.
