It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of BERNICE FLYNN on Friday, February 21, 2003. Bernice was born in Lafleche, Saskatchewan on October 31, 1917. She was predeceased by her husband, Eldon in 1994. Bernice will be greatly missed by daughter, Betty (Hugh) Dunbar of Meaford, Ontario and son, John (Joanne) Flynn of Calgary, Alberta. She will also be missed by her grandchildren, Christie Dunbar (Howard Nauboris) of Ann Arbor, Michigan, Courtney Dunbar of Oakville, Ontario, Colleen and Kevin Flynn of Calgary, Alberta. Mourning Bernice’s passing are her sisters, Grace Johnson and Alice Chisholm of Kamloops, B.C., sisters-in-law, Margaret (Alvin) Qualle of Hughson, California, Norma (Bill) Hellings of Edmonton, Alberta, Alice Flynn of Calgary, Alberta and Mary Waldbauer of Calgary, Alberta. Bernice also leaves, with fond memories, many nieces, nephews and close friends. As well, she leaves her special friend, Alick Sutherland, who was a wonderful companion in recent years. Bernice enjoyed an active life involving herself in several businesses that the Flynn’s had. She was an avid bridge player, enjoyed her crossword puzzles, and was a lover of animals. She spent many hours volunteering at Zion United Church and was a lifetime member of the UCW as well as WMS and was a member of the bell choir. Prior to moving to Moose Jaw, she played the organ in the LaFleche United Church. She enjoyed knitting, baking and made many delicacies for Canadian Club and also donated to Missions. Bernice’s greatest joy was raising her family. She was always encouraging to her children and grandchildren. She will be greatly missed. The family wishes to thank Bernice’s many friends for their kind support. A special thanks to the caregivers at Pioneer Lodge and Providence Place for their kind and loving care for our mother. A celebration of Bernice’s life will be held on Friday, March 7, 2003 at 11:00 a.m. at the Zion United Church, 423 Main St. N., Moose Jaw. Linda Owens will officiate. Memorialization will take place at Sunset Cemetery. CHRISTINA ELSWORTH
CHRISTINA ELSWORTH (nee: Tantum) of Drinkwater, Saskatchewan passed away peacefully in her sleep August 17, 2007. Born December 25, 1947 in Cardiff, Wales, Chris immigrated to Canada in 1974. She is survived by her loving husband, Alan Elsworth, who she married in 1996; children: Howard (Misty), Julie, Paul (Julie), Tony (Roslyn), Robert (Ruth), and Linda (Aaron); grandchildren: Jessica, Ryeker, Chaz, Calin, Tyler, Chelsea, and Samuel. Chris also has relatives in British Columbia and Wales, all of whom will feel the loss. Many friends in the surrounding area too will miss her sharp wit and infectious laugh. A love of gardening and being outdoors since her early retirement kept her very busy as did being on the town council in Drinkwater. Chris was also preparing to run for Mayor. This wonderful woman touched the hearts of all that knew her and will always be sadly missed but lovingly remembered. A Celebration of Chris’ Life will be held on Wednesday, August 22, 2007 at 1:30 p.m. at W. J. Jones & Son Funeral Chapel, 106 Athabasca St. E., Moose Jaw. Pastor John Duerksen will officiate. Private family memorialization will take place at a later time. KEN CRAIK
John Kenneth "Ken" Craik passed away at the Moose Jaw Union Hospital on Wednesday, December 27, 2006 with family at his side. Born in Moose Jaw on October 10, 1922 to John and Hilda Craik, Ken grew up on the family farm and received his education at Cobourg School, Central Collegiate and graduated from the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon. Predeceased by his wife, Lu; two brothers, David and Murray; sister, Marjorie; and nephew, David Craik. Ken is survived by his children: Bryon (Kathy), Brock (Sheri), and Joan (Dillon) Boyle; his grandchildren, Chey (Cori), Jesse (Sherry), Lori (Jay), Jon, Ashley, Sarah and his seven great-grandchildren. Ken is also remembered by his brother Doug (Mary) Craik, sisters-in-law Dorothy Craik and Mona (Earl) Code, brother-in-law Don Preston and many nieces and nephews. Ken joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1941 and served as a pilot overseas in World War II. When the war ended, Ken returned to Moose Jaw and farmed in the Eyebrow and Cobourg District. He held his private pilot's license and enjoyed taking his family and friends on flying excursions. Ken fondly recalled his fly-over Craik Island on Black Bear Lake named after his brother, Sargeant David Craik who was killed overseas while serving with the RCAf in 1941. Ken and Lu enjoyed numerous vacations and 26 winters in their Arizona home enjoying the "good life". Grandpa treated all his family to many Christmas vacations in the south and we treasure the wonderful memories of the fun he planned for us on mountain hikes, picnics, trips to Disneyland, Las Vegas and more. Grandpa was always full of adventure and attempted hang gliding when he was 56 years old. He was an avid reader, enjoyed sports, hiking, and his home at the Mulberry Estates for the last 3˝ years. A time to celebrate Ken’s life will be held on Saturday, January 6, 2007 at 2:00 p.m. at Minto United Church, 1036 – 7th Ave. N.W., Moose Jaw with a tribute to Ken at 2:30 p.m. with Della Ferguson as the Celebrant. If friends so desire, memorials may be made to the Moose Jaw Union Hospital Foundation, 455 Fairford St. E., Moose Jaw, S6H 1H3. VIOLET CHURA
Violet Mildred Chura (Edwards) passed away peacefully in Moose Jaw Union Hospital on Friday December 29, with her family by her bedside. Violet met Gene, who was already in the military, in Saskatoon and they were married in 1940. Following the War, they were transferred to Moose Jaw where they settled to raise their family and build their home. While Gene was employed as a Commercial Sales Rep for a Fruit Wholesale House, and away several days a week, Vi managed and successfully operated a family Grocery and Confectionary Store. Mom was a loving and caring wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, always putting her family’s needs ahead of her own. Vi is predeceased by her brothers Jim and Leonard, a sister Dorothy and an infant daughter Sherry Dawn in 1946. She is survived by her husband of sixty-six years, Gene; her son, Leonard (Jeannette) and daughter, Debbie; grandson, Jeffrey (Ellen) and granddaughter Jennifer (Ken) Marcicki; and two great-granddaughters, Taylor and Chantal. A Service of Remembrance will be held at the Church of Our Lady, 566 Vaughan Street, on Wednesday January 3, 2007 at 1:30 pm. Reverend Father Michael Conteh will be the celebrant. Memorialization will take place at Rosedale Cemetery. Memorials to the Sask. Heart & Stroke Association, 2360 2nd Ave, Regina, S4R 1A6, would be appreciated. Robert Gerald “Jay” Busby, born July 12, 1926, died peacefully with his family by his side September 17, 2007. He is predeceased by his wife Shirley in 1998, parents Gordon, Helen Busby; and sister Joyce Triebor. Jay is survived by: Greg (Mary) of Penhold, AB, and their family Brandon, Jill (Adam) Hogaboam of Red Deer, AB; Barrie (Cheryl) of Regina and their family, B.J. of Lanigan, Chris of Regina; Joan (Dale) Zimmerman and their family, Christi of Moose Jaw, step-granddaughters Karri (Taylor) Mickleborough of Caron, Bobbi (Aaron) Machuik of Craven; brothers and sisters: Lorne (Phyllis) of Victoria, Bev (Maynard) Gray of Moose Jaw, Beryl Smith of Edmonton, Jack (Judy) of Boissevain, MB. From Jay’s early career with the YMCA to his illustrious career with Crown Life Insurance, he developed life long friendships with clients and associates. During his lifetime Jay was an avid outdoorsman, spending his time gardening, skiing, canoeing, hunting, golfing and walking. A Celebration of Jay’s life will be held at W. J. Jones & Son Family Centre on Friday September 21, 2007 at 2:00 pm. Della Ferguson will be the celebrant. CHARLIE DUERS
ROBERT CHARLES “CHARLIE” DUERS. It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Charlie on October 15, 2004 with his loving family by his side. Charlie was born in Newcastle on Tyne, England on July 29, 1917. His father worked for the United Bus Company and his mother stayed home to raise the family, four boys and two girls. Charlie was a good student and avid sportsman in his school years. When old enough he delivered the morning and afternoon newspapers to earn extra money to help with the family expenses. After graduating with honours he was recruited to play professional soccer for the Sheffield Wednesday Football Club. His football career was cut short when drafted by the Royal Air Force as World War II began. He was then posted to Swift Current, Saskatchewan in 1941 where he met Audrey Winget, his wife of 61 years. After the war, in 1954, the family immigrated to Edmonton, where Charlie gained employment with Canadian Pittsburg Industries. After 28 years with this company and several transfers across Canada, he retired in his last relocation – Moose Jaw. In his spare time, Charlie loved to play cards, golf, fish, hunt, curl, camp, and all types of music but most important he loved spending time with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He is survived by his loving wife and best friend, Audrey; three daughters: Margaret (Wayne) Sorenson – Edmonton, Joyce (Gerry) Regier – Winnipeg and Lesley Flynn – Medicine Hat; seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren, one brother, John (Kathy) and two sisters: Margaret Duers and Elsie Walton – all of England, one sister-in-law, Lorraine Winget – Kelowna, and many nephews, nieces and friends. Charlie was predeceased by his mother, Mary, father, Bob, and brothers, Frank and Leslie - all of England. A Celebration of Charlie’s Life will be held at Minto United Church, Moose Jaw on Tuesday, October 19, 2004 at 1:30 p.m. Reverend John Carley will officiate. Memorialization will take place privately at Prairie Memorial Columbarium. Army, Navy & Airforce Veterans Funeral Rites will be conducted at the Church. The family gives special thanks to the wonderful staff at Pioneer Lodge for their kindness, support and care in making Charlie’s last 1½ years at the lodge a home. As an expression of sympathy a contribution may be made to Pioneer Lodge, 1000 Albert Street, Moose Jaw, S6H 2Y2 or to a charity of your choice. On Monday, March 28, 2005 RICHARD NOVAK passed away suddenly at home at the age of 55 years. He was born in Melville, Saskatchewan on January 7, 1950. Richard was predeceased by his father John in 1997, he is survived by his mother, Elizabeth Levy and friend, Oswald Ulmer, also his sisters: Gloria (Bruce) Eckstein of Regina, Carol (Neil) Riess of Regina and Nancy Cansdale of Penticton, B.C., special niece and nephews: Carrie (Ron) Osoiwy, Curtis (Carla) Appel and Chad (Jamie) Appel, Charles Riess, Daniel Riess – all of Regina and Trevor Cansdale of Penticton, B.C. A Celebration of Richard’s Life will be held on Saturday, April 2, 2005 at 10:00 am at the W. J. Jones & Son Funeral Chapel, 106 Athabasca St. E., Moose Jaw. Captain Stephen Kennedy will officiate.
