1916 - 2004
It is with sadness that we say goodbye to Mom, but there is happiness knowing that she is resting and at peace in her eternal home; and peace for those yet on the earth, knowing that our loved ones who died in Christ are safe in the arms of Jesus. Olga was born in the Fox Valley, Saskatchewan area to Bertha and Adam Maier on November 27, 1916. She moved with her family to the Kayville, Saskatchewan district in 1924 where she resided until her marriage to Frank Koch in 1935. Olga and Frank moved to Ormiston in 1936. She loved company and her door was always open for a cup of tea and a taste of her baking or preserves. Her former boarders will agree that she tried to make everyone welcome and made sure that they were well fed. Olga was always ready to help friends and family and was particularly capable when illness was a factor. Prior to better roads and snowplows she was the Florence Nightingale of Ormiston, answering many wake up calls by people requiring “the nurse”. Olga was very active in the Ladies Community Club and in many aspects of Christ Lutheran Church at Ormiston. Olga and Frank moved to Moose Jaw in 1978, where they continued with old, and made new friendships; playing cards and eating being the prime functions. Olga was an active member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church, enjoying the fellowship of the LWML and the companionship of the New Beginnings Group. Olga died on May 2. Olga was predeceased by her husband Frank in 1991 and her brother Waldemar in 2002. She is survived by her son Edwin (Deanna) of Calgary; and her daughter Angela (Glen) Helson of Moose Jaw; grandchildren Robynne Koch of New York, NY; Meagan (Brock) Schroeder of Calgary; Kingsley (Sabrina) Koch of Calgary; Todd (Pamela) Helson of Calgary; great-grandchildren Alexa and Nicholas Helson of Calgary; sister Alma Hillis of Regina; brothers Arthur (Wilhemina) Maier and Sigmund Maier, both of Saskatoon, Edwin (Remona) Maier of Penticton; and several sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews and cousins. We wish to thank the many caregivers who have been so kind to Mom, the Staff at Oxford Place, where Mom truly had a home for three years, and to the Staff at Providence Place, who have been so compassionate and caring for this last year. Private interment will take place at the family plot, Rosedale Cemetery. The Funeral Service will be held on Friday, May 7, 2004 at 2:00 p.m. at Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Moose Jaw. Reverend John Kreutzwieser will officiate. Memorials to the Saskatchewan Heart & Stroke Foundation, 2360-2nd Ave., Regina, Saskatchewan, S4R 1A6 would be appreciated. In living memory of Olga, a tree will be planted in Wakamow Valley by W. J. Jones & Son Funeral Home.
