DUDLEY "DOUG" COLLINS

DUDLEY HERBERT “DOUG”COLLINS, longtime Moose Jaw resident and musician passed away May 12, 2005 at the age of 91 years. Born November 26, 1913 in Brandon, Manitoba. He was predeceased by his parents, George Edward and Ellen Collins. Doug was very fond of the outdoors, having been raised on a homestead near Quill Lake. He worked thirty-five years for the C.P. Railway in Toronto and Moose Jaw. His passion was making and playing violins and he was involved with many musical groups in Moose Jaw. Doug is survived by his wife, Sybil of Moose Jaw; children: Joan (Gary) Bauer and their daughter: Laura Leah (Jeff) English – Calgary; Ron (Bernice) and their children: Kimberly and Kevin – Regina; Allan (Leslie) and their children: JoAnn and Mark – Red Deer. The Funeral Service will be held on Monday, May 16, 2005 at 1:30 p.m. in the W. J. Jones & Son Funeral Chapel, Moose Jaw. Reverend Peter J. Calhoun will officiate. Interment will take place at Rosedale Cemetery. For those so wishing, memorials may be made to a charity of one’s choice. In living memory of Doug, a tree will be planted in Wakamow Valley by W. J. Jones & Son Funeral Home.

AMY PINNOW

It is with great sadness, we announce the passing of AMY VERONICA PINNOW on August 26, 2003, after a lengthy battle with cancer. Amy was born February 23, 1930 in Halifax, Nova Scotia. She joined the RCAF in 1951. While in the service, she met John (Jack) Pinnow in 1955 and they were married on May 5, 1956. Amy was a Past Matron of Mizpah Chapter #1 Order of Eastern Star. Predeceased by her parents, Chester and Ella Coolen, three sisters and four brothers, Amy is lovingly remembered by her husband, Jack; her four children: Linda (Ken) Drysdale of the Caron District; Judy Wikman of Parson, BC; Donna Pinnow (Jim Reid) of Calgary; and John (Joanne) Pinnow of Calgary; six grandchildren: Jason and Chantal Colquhoun, Marshall Drysdale, Jasmine, Calvin, and Reanne Wikman. She is also survived by her brother, Ches (Ruth) Coolen of Coaldale, AB.; sisters-in-law: Joyce Pinnow of Regina and Myrtle Coolen of Port de Grave, NF, as well as numerous nieces, nephews and a multitude of friends. The Funeral Service will be held in the Chapel of W. J. Jones & Son Funeral Home, Moose Jaw on Friday, August 29, 2003 at 10:30 a.m. Bill Thomson will officiate. Eastern Star Memorial Service will take place in the chapel. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Canadian Cancer Society, 223 Fairford St. E., Moose Jaw, S6H 0E; The Saskatchewan Heart & Stroke Foundation, Box 521, Moose Jaw, S6H 4P2, or to a charity of one’s choice would be appreciated by the family. In living memory of Amy, a tree will be planted in Wakamow Valley by W. J. Jones & Son Funeral Home.

ADELINE WASLEY

It is with great sadness that the family and friends of Adeline Wasley announce her passing on Wednesday March 25, 2009. Adeline was the last member of her immediate family. She was predeceased by her parents, John and Antonia, her brothers, Nestor and Mero Slaw, and her sisters, Olga and Evangeline. She is survived by a nephew, a niece, numerous cousins, and many friends. Adeline was born in Winnipeg, MB but grew up in Moose Jaw. She graduated from Central Collegiate, attended Normal School and began a teaching career that spanned many years. She taught in the three western provinces. In BC she taught near Kimberly, Kelowna and Abbotsford. While in Alberta she taught near Medicine Hat and Calgary. She concluded her service to the education of many children at King Edward School in Moose Jaw. The happiest days of Adeline’s life were during her years spent in the classroom. Adeline participated in all kinds of sports particularly softball. Adeline enjoyed travelling, reading, and entertaining guests in her home. She held a deep faith in God and relied on His care many times throughout life. She was a devoted member of the Ukrainian Catholic Church. Adeline was always proud of the cultural values and traditions of her Ukrainian heritage. She was a member of the Superannuated Teachers of Saskatchewan. Upon retirement Adeline enjoyed countless hours in her garden and she generously gave to friends and strangers of its bounty. She was noted for her hospitality to those who came to visit her. She would serve a lunch or meal and then often send something home with the guest. For almost the last three years Adeline has made her home at Chez Nous where she often enjoyed the bingo games. An Evening Prayer Service will be held at W. J. Jones & Son Chapel on Sunday March 29, 2009 at 7:00 pm. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated at the Ukrainian Catholic Church, 621 Fifth Ave. S.W., Moose Jaw, on Monday March 30, 2009 at 10:00 am. Father Yurij Lazurko will be the Celebrant. Interment will take place at the family plot in Rosedale Cemetery. Memorials to a charity of choice would be appreciated. In living memory of Adeline, a tree will be planted in Besant Park by W. J. Jones & Son Funeral Home.

JACOB MESSNER

JACOB JOSEPH MESSNER, beloved husband of Rosie (Morhart) for 56 years, went to be with the Lord on Friday, June 3, 2005, with family at his side, after a courageous battle with cancer. Jacob was born on September 22, 1926 at Bayard, Saskatchewan. He received his education at Hapsburg School and later married his sweetheart Rosie of Spring Valley in 1949. Jacob worked at CP Railway until March of 1950. They farmed at Bayard until 1953, then purchased and moved to the Galilee farm raising their 8 children there. They moved to Moose Jaw in 1990 and retired from farming in 1994. Jacob and Rosie enjoyed traveling including their trips to Europe, The Maritimes and winter trips to Arizona. They also enjoyed many camping and fishing trips with family and friends. Jacob was a dedicated member of the Saskatchewan Wheat Pool for many years and was also an active Spring Valley School Board member for 25 years. Jacob and Rosie opened their home to family and friends, for a visit, a meal or a good game of cards. He was predeceased by his mother, Eva, father, Jacob and his sister, Johanna. Along with loving wife Rosie, Jacob is survived their 8 children: Harvey (Sandra) – Moose Jaw, Marvin – Regina, Richard – Regina, Wayne and companion, Joan – Saskatoon, Laverne (Donna) – Spring Valley, Jackie (Kelly) Baran – Regina, Valerie (Les) Schick – Spring Valley, Gaileen (Kevin) McLaren – Boharm. He is also survived by 24 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren; sisters and brother: Anne Armstrong – Calgary, Theresa Montgomery – Vancouver and Frank Schupack – Moose Jaw, mother-in-law, Anne Oberderfer - Moose Jaw, as well as numerous brothers and sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews. A Memorial Mass will be held on Tuesday, June 7, 2005 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church, 1064 3rd Ave. N.W., Moose Jaw. Father Alex Osei C.S.Sp. will preside. Memorialization will take place at Rosedale Cemetery. Prayers will be held Monday evening at 7:00 p.m. in the W. J. Jones & Son Funeral Chapel, 106 Athabasca St. E. In lieu of flowers, donations in Jacob’s memory can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, 61B Ross St. W., Moose Jaw, Sask., S6H 2M2. In living memory of Jacob, a tree will be planted in Wakamow Valley by W. J. Jones & Son Funeral Home.

RUDI H. HARLOS

RUDI HORST HARLOS, age 74 years, passed away at his home on March 14, 2004. Rudi was born February 17, 1930 in the Bayard district. He lived there most of his life. Predeceased by his Dad in 1964 and Mom in 1990, he is also predeceased by his stepbrothers: George, Walter, Bill, Adam, Gottfried and a stepsister-in-law, Marg. Rudi is survived by brothers: Ted (Dena) of Mossbank and Peter (Ilene) of Moose Jaw; sisters: Matilda of Bayard and Elsie of Lethbridge, a step-sister, Ida and stepsisters-in-law, Wynne of Vancouver, B.C., and Tillie of Calgary, as well as several nieces, nephews, aunts and cousins. Also long time family friends, Henry and Thelma Machmer. Following cremation, A Service of Remembrance will be held on Tuesday, March 30, 2004 at 1:00 pm in the W. J. Jones & Son Funeral Chapel, Moose Jaw. Della Ferguson will officiate. Memorialization will take place in the Peace Lutheran Cemetery at a later date. Memorials may be made to the Moose Jaw Humane Society or to a charity of one’s choice. In living memory of Rudi, a tree will be planted in Wakamow Valley by W. J. Jones & Son Funeral Home.

ELIZABETH "BETTY " VIK

Elizabeth “Betty” Joyce Vik (nee Willfong), passed away on January 2, 2005. Betty was born in Moose Jaw July 13, 1949. She attended Queen Elizabeth, St. Michael’s schools and Vanier Collegiate. Betty worked at St. Anthony’s Home in Moose Jaw and the Regina General Hospital as a Nurse’s Aide. She also worked at the Hardisty General Hospital, the Leduc General Hospital, and the Circle Drive Special Care Home in Saskatoon as a housekeeper. She married Alvin Vik on November 14, 1970. They moved to Hardisty, AB in 1977 and to Leduc, AB in 1996, then to Saskatoon in 2001, to be closer to her grandchildren. Betty is survived by her mother and father, Mary and Murray Willfong of Moose Jaw; husband and soul-mate, Alvin; daughter, Jeanette (Terry) Schaffer and son, Adam; grandchildren, Ryan and Tia, all of Saskatoon; as well as many aunts, uncles and cousins. The Funeral Service will be held at W. J. Jones & Son Chapel on Friday January 7, 2004 at 1:30 pm. Reverend Frank Mitchell will officiate. Cremation will follow with memorialization at a later date. Memorials to the Canadian Cancer Society, 61B Ross St. W., Moose Jaw, S6H 2M2, would be appreciated. In living memory of Betty, a tree will be planted in Wakamow Valley by W. J. Jones & Son Funeral Home.

ALVIN WARKENTIN

Alvin Warkentin of Moose Jaw, passed away peacefully on February 17, 2004 at the age of 83 years. Alvin was born on July 18, 1920 at Dalmeny, SK to Jacob Warkentin and Aganetha Thiessen, the second youngest of six sons. Alvin grew up in this farming community helping out by working in the family service station and delivering the milk produced by the small dairy herd they kept. After attending Normal School in Saskatoon, Alvin taught everything from primary through high school grades as well as being principal for four years and guidance counselor for eleven years at the end of his career. Over 38 years, Alvin was a teacher in ten different communities across the province. He received both a B.A. and B.Ed from the University of Saskatchewan. Music played an important role in his life. Alvin sang in choirs for many years and was choir director for various church and community choirs. Over the years he helped to organize music festivals in several communities and greatly enjoyed live concerts. Singing in the church choir at Knox Church in Saskatoon he met his future wife, Helen Asselstine. They were married in 1948 and raised three sons. Alvin had a great interest in youth. He combined this with his love of track and field through coaching, as well as being a founding member and president of the Saskatchewan High School Athletic Association. He supported the local chapter of DeMolay in many capacities, both locally and nationally. The community was important to Alvin. He was a long standing active member and contributor to the Memorial Lodge of Moose Jaw, as well as the Royal Arch. Alvin served his community and was in turn greatly supported through his active participation in the life of Minto United Church where he sang in the choir and was a member of the Church Council for many years. Predeceased by his parents and brothers, David and Henry, Alvin is survived by his wife of 55 years, Helen; three sons, Robert Warkentin; Bill Barkaie (Rachel and grandson Assaf) – all of Moose Jaw; and Ian Warkentin (Christine Campbell and grandsons, Hugh and Malcolm) of Corner Brook, NL; brothers, Arnold (Grace), and Bill of Saskatoon, Lloyd (Lee) of Sidney, BC; and sister-in-law, Ruth Gottshall of Cape Coral, FL. Funeral Services will be held at Minto United Church, 1036 Seventh Ave. NW, Moose Jaw, on Saturday February 21, 2004 at 2:00 pm. Reverend John Carley will officiate. Interment will follow at Rosedale Cemetery. Memorials to Minto United Church, or a charity of choice would be appreciated. In living memory of Alvin, a tree will be planted in Wakamow Valley by W. J. Jones & Son Funeral Home.
