He attended Hapsburg school until the age of 14, when he left to look after his oldest brother’s farm. At this time, the Depression was firmly entrenched and he traveled throughout the prairies and northern Ontario in search of work. Some of his many jobs included herding sheep and cutting pulpwood. He told many stories of “riding the freight trains” throughout this difficult time. Charlie enlisted in the Canadian Army after the war broke out. He served first in England with his unit, the Cameron Highlanders of Ottawa and participated in the D-Day invasion. At the end of the war, he remained in Europe as part of reconstructive war efforts. In late 1945, he arrived back in Canada and married his sweetheart, Alma Wolske, in January 1946 and they spent 57 wonderful years together. He was in business as a barber for 46 years and had shops on River Street West and later, on Main Street in the Churchill Hotel. He affected the lives of many people and was known in many circles in and around Moose Jaw. Anyone who knew him realized that he lived life by example and that he was a kind, gentle, compassionate man. The most important thing in his life was his relationship with his Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, and he spoke openly about what it would be like one day to be with Him in heaven. He was an active participant in the recreational and educational aspects of his children’s lives including the Empire Home and School Association, Moose Jaw Church Minor Hockey Association and the Boy Scouts of Canada. Most importantly, he served his Lord in many ways as a very active member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church. He took great pleasure in looking after his home and garden.
